Latin American Studies
THE MINOR
Latin American studies is an interdisciplinary program open to all majors at Miami University. It aims to introduce students to Latin American from mutually enriching perspectives in the human ties, social sciences and physical sciences in order to develop a comprehensive understanding of the region's cultures, economies, social and political systems, literature, history and geography. Service learning with Latino/a-Hispanic and Latin American communities in Ohio and diverse study abroad opportunities promote the active application of interdisciplinary and international knowledge to issues relevant to students' lives and vital to today's changing world. The Latin American Studies Program director and faculty advisory committee collaborate with a larger community of faculty and staff who have research and personal interests in Latin America. The LAS program receives staff help from the Programs Support Office in 120 MacMillan Hall (513) 529-5333. To declare a LAS minor, please see the Program Director o an LAS advisor. Requirements for the

The Greater Southwest American archaeologists call it "The Greater Southwest." The geographic boundaries have never been precisely delineated, but an 'old saw' suggests that the region runs from Durango Colorado to Durango Mexico, and from Las Vegas Nevada to Las Vegas New Mexico. The archaeologists of this region celebrate a diverse mix of people and their cultures, the in-situ preservation of sites and artifacts, and the greater scientific appreciation of these elements within their cultural, biological and spatial contexts. Before you visit the local dig, check with SWA for the latest information about the archaeology of the Greater Southwest. Then, get out your "45-5" Marshalltown Trowel and sharpen it. There are many great layers of material culture and stratigraphy to uncover!
