Contents of Curriculum Unit 92.02.06:
To Guide Entry
Language is words only in part. To study a language is to be exposed to the culture and customs of those peoples who have developed it. Spanish, like all languages, has risen from many sources, each a people who added layers of vocabulary and nuance. In the seminar “Writings and Re-writings of the Discovery and Conquest of America” the intersection of two worlds is to be considered: the world of sixteenth century western Europe, particularly Spain, and Portugal, and the cultures which existed in the Americas, particularly Amazonia at that time. We will discuss the collision and permeation as understood by writers of the time and by modern writers seeking new interpretations. We will be looking for the historical roots of 20th century problems. I consider this curriculum unit to be the third in a set of three units which explore seepage between the cultures that came into contact as a result of the voyages of Columbus. My first paper, written in the “Latin American Short Story” seminar presented by Roberto Gonzáles Echevarr’a in 1987, was an analysis of “The High Road of Saint James” by Alejo Carpentier. In it the world of sixteenth century Spain is illuminated as the protagonist travels to the West Indies. The second of these papers was written in 1991 in the seminar on “Regions and Regionalism in the United States: Studies in the History and Cultures of the South, the Northeast and the American Southwest” presented by Howard Lamar. Entitled “Between Aztlán and Quivira: Europeans and Indians in the Southwestern United States,” it is a study of the cultures which existed in the Southwest in the fourteenth through sixteenth centuries, and includes the impact which Europeans had on these cultures and peoples.

    A PARADISE IN THE ANDES
The Republic of Ecuador is located in the northwest corner of South America and is part of the Andes region. It is a coastal country, bordered by Colombia to the north, Peru to the east and south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Its total area is 256,370 square kilometers after the peace agreement of October 1998, and the final frontier line was established May 13, 1999 with its neighbor Peru. The majority of Ecuador's population is mixed (mestizo) and indigenous. According to a census of March 1, 2000, Ecuador has now a total of 12,646,095 inhabitants. The name of Ecuador was officially taken after its separation of La Gran Colombia in 1830, when it became an independent republic. The name is based on the fact that through it passes the equatorial line, first known by the studies made by the Frech Geodesic Mission in coordination with Ecuadorian scientists during the Real Audiencia of Quito.
Ecuadorian geography is defined by the gigantic Andes mountains which manifest themselves north to south, dividing Ecuador into three physical parts. Each part has its own particular relief and geological characteristics. These regions are: the coast or Anteandina, the highlands or Interandina, and the Amazon or Trasandina. The different geography and geology allowed definite cultures to develop with very evident and curious manifestations such as the Costeño (from the coast) the Serrano (highlands or sierra) and the Oriental (from the Amazon to the east). To this we add a fourth, the 16,917 inhabitants of the Archipelago of the Galapagos which are some 1,000 kilometers (700 miles) from the continental coast.

    http://edgarcayce.com/ancientsoam.html
Ancient South America Recent Evidence Supporting
Edgar Cayce's Story of Atlantis and Mu
Gregory Little John Van Auken Lora Little
Ancient South America is a genuine enigma. The continent is covered with ancient ruins, pyramids, and other archaeological sites, a host of which date to 50,000 years ago. Archaeological evidence shows that people lived in South America as early as 300,000 B.C., but the biases of North American archaeologists have hampered investigations and publicity of finds. In this third book in a popular series investigating Edgar Cayce's psychic visions of the ancient world, the authors show how archaeological evidence and recent genetic research from South America almost perfectly match Edgar Cayce's story of South America. In fact, genetic and other evidence strongly point to Atlantis and Mu (Lemuria) as the origin of many of the peoples of ancient South America. Both Atlantean and Lemurian DNA may well have been identified. In addition, the book shows how North American archaeologists, cloaked in the guise of "superior science," have actually maintained a set of pseudoscientific pronouncements and ideas for over 70 years all of which have been exposed as totally false since 1997. Despite the long dominance of North American archaeologists over media announcements and textbooks, many South American archaeologists have long asserted that a host of sites in the continent were occupied long before North America. Subjected to cruel and unrelenting ridicule by their North American counterparts, these scientists continued to conduct research showing how their findings were correct.
