    LAND OF DIVERSITY
South Africa is one of the most diverse and enchanting countries in the world. Exotic combinations of landscapes, people, history and culture offer a larger-than-life experience for the traveller in search of a truly unique and inspiring experience.
South Africa's vast landscape includes savannahs, snow-covered mountains, forests, tropical swamps, endless beaches, tranquil rivers and... bustling urban epicentres.
South Africa is known for its abundant wildlife (and of course the famous "big five") as well as its fantastic birding and eco-tourism possibilities.
However, the real heart of this vibrant country is the diversity of people and cultures. South Africa's family tree goes way back to the start of time. The country has been touted as the Cradle of Humankind, because it was here that archaeologists discovered 2,5 million year old fossils as well as the 100 000 year old remains of modern humankind.
Many of South Africa's cultures have their roots in an ancient world, whilst some of the cultures are relatively new - and others, well, are a fascinating mix of both.

HOME LEARN EVENTS LINKS ... CONTACT Welcome to the South African Music Week website! South African Music Week is the annual celebration of South African music which was established in 1999. The campaign has become a fixture on the South African Arts and Culture calendar. The aims are to raise awareness and increase the profile of South African music. South African Music Week is run by the MIDI Trust in partnership with the Department of Arts and Culture and a strategic partnership has been formed with the Department of Education. New relationships have been formed with the National Lottery Distribution Fund and MTN Free 2 Speak. This year's campaign includes a new focus i.e. to take SAMW into schools. The strategic plan has been built around the Department of Arts and Culture's vision to broaden music industry knowledge in higher education institutions. Learners in schools countrywide can look forward to a 30-minute video of careers in the music industry. The objective of South African Music Week is to expose 1,4 million learners to the informational video, have more than 120 emerging performance nationally and expose 1512 new artists to 75 000 people during the eight days music week. Live music remains an important aspect of SAMW - check out the events taking place around the country during SAMW.

By Abraham McLaughlin PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA On most days, Hazel, a round-faced woman with bright eyes, doesn't think about the fact that she's a statistical oddity in South Africa. She's a black woman who's married to a white man in a country where mixed-race unions were illegal until 1990. But occasionally it hits her. The group will spend most of its time in Western Cape Province of South Africa- centered in the stunning city of Cape Town, and extending into further regions of South Africa, including the urban centers of Gauteng (Johannesburg and Pretoria), the agricultural regions of the Orange Free State, and the relatively impoverished Wild-Coast region of the Eastern Cape Province. The group will visit tourist attractions including Kruger National Game Park and secluded beach areas, and students will be given the opportunity to explore the region further in small groups. Estimated Cost: on campus tuition, room and board plus $2,000 travel (cost may be adjusted due to changes in currency exchange rates and air fares) Semester Leaders: Lyn and Naomi Krause Enrollment: maximum 25 students Course Credits: 15 semester hours *Course Descriptions CCUS 201Cross-Cultural Understanding 3 SH CCHST 301 History of South Africa 3 SH The course will explore several of the defining historical events for each of the three major cultural groups of South Africa: 1. Prehistory, the Khoi-San, the early Bantu migrations, Shaka Zulu and the formation of the Basotho, Matebele, Xhosa, and Zulu nations. 2. Spanish, British and Dutch Colonialism, and the migrations of the Boer-Trekkers. 3. The importation and indenturment of Indian sugar-cane workers. These three pillars of South African history will then serve as the lens through which the 20th century culture clashes- including Apartheid, repression, the homelands and townships, the African freedom movement, and white fear/white flight- are viewed.

'Madonna of the Townships' dies in South Africa

CBC News Online Brenda Fassie (CP photo)

JOHANNESBURG - South African singer Brenda Fassie, known as much for her hard living as her popular music, has died. She was 39 years old. Fassie passed away on Sunday. She was admitted to hospital on April 26 after a cardiac arrest brought on by an asthma attack left her in a coma. She had suffered brain damage, and was breathing with the help of a ventilator. Fassie was known as the "Madonna of the Townships" because of her offstage antics, which included drug abuse, public temper tantrums, and highly publicized affairs with lovers of both sexes. "I'm a shocker," she once told an interviewer. "I like to create controversy. It's my trademark." Her death has left South Africa in mourning. "Brenda is gone. She was not only a South African singer, but a Pan-African, making souls rise in bliss wherever her voice reached," Thabo Mbeki, South Africa's President, said in a statement.

AIDS in Africa: 'Culture' is no excuse for dangerous behavior Yolan LaPorte IHT
Tuesday, May 4, 2004 AIDS in Africa WASHINGTON A few weeks ago I traveled in sub-Saharan Africa and was struck by the incredible beauty of the wildlife, the generosity of the people, and the potential for economic growth. But as a consultant to U.S. health agencies fighting AIDS, I was also disheartened by the ubiquitous presence of the disease and the acceptance of behaviors that help it spread. Nowhere more than in sub-Saharan Africa is AIDS so vividly a disease bred by life-threatening cultural attitudes.
There is some cause for hope in fighting AIDS in Africa. Antiretroviral drugs are now becoming more widely available, either free or at considerably reduced costs. The Bush administration's ambitious global AIDS initiative, for example, will eventually provide treatment for two million HIV-infected people, most of them in sub-Saharan Africa.
But taking antiretroviral drugs alone will not stop the spread of AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa, where nearly 27 million are infected. Prevention needs to be reinforced, and that will come only with a change in behaviors that are too often excused in the name of "culture."

    South Africa in Africa
South Africa has to begin to precipitate scholarship in understanding Africa and its own role on the continent. South Africa and its neighbours have a rich social history, a wealth of experience in economic and political development and change as well as great demographic variation. Deepening our understanding of our own environment, people and society in relation to the rest of Africa could lead to positioning the country as a significant role player in the African Renaissance.
