For social science buffs, the time is ripe in South Africa for exploring the history and legacy of apartheid. Only 10 years after Nelson Mandela's release from Robben Island , the former prison has been transformed into a museum. Cape Town is a fantastic base from which to explore the history of South Africa's "coloured" and Muslim populations, especially at the District Six Museum and in the Bo-Kaap . The Eastern Cape 's small towns offer insight into Boer life in the stifling Karoo , while its capital, Port Elizabeth , boasts two of the best township tours in the country. Trips further inland reveal the story of South Africa's development. Stop in at

Articles Grierson in South Africa. Culture, state and nationalist ideology in the South African film industry: 1940–1981
    Author: Keyan G Tomaselli
    Date: 1985

    Keyan G Tomaselli

Of Britain's former colonies, Australia has perhaps gone furtherest in decolonising its cultural production, and the success of the Australian film provides a telling standard of measurement. If the Canadian situation remains grimly problematic (not to say still colonial), a look at South Africa's film industry provides a reflection which, while wildly different from our own in some respects, is at the same times curiously familiar. And not only because of the key role played by John Grierson. If Grierson's Canadian involvement is well-known, his South African consultation is not. And as Keyan Tomaselli documents below, Grierson's misreading of white South African nationalism could suggest the intriguing possibility that he might have equally misread nationalism in Canada. Certainly Grierson's blindness to 'the French fact' in canada, when combined with his South African aporia, could provide some clues towards a reconsideration of Grierson's Canadian role. Again, as Tomaselli details, the case of South Africa (or any national cinema) documents once more the utter centrality of the role of the state in advancing or retarding the development of a national film industry. For those who tend to discount the influence of the state's power in defining and using 'culture' for self-serving ends, the case of South Africa's film industry provides an instructive negative example.

    Introduction
"Rainbow Cuisine" defines the food style in South Africa. It's a term that reflects the cultural depth, creative spectrum, and spiritual unity of a diverse people. With 40 million inhabitants speaking 11 different languages, the country offers a fascinating potpourri of fresh, delectable, eclectic fare. The food depicts a blend of many cultural societies European, Asian, and African with a tantalizing table that has evolved over centuries. It showcases the varied, European food traditions of the Italian, Portuguese, Greek, English, French, and Dutch. It presents the fruity sweet, and sweet-sour tastes of the Malay, a people from the East Indies who came to the Cape as slaves by the Dutch colonials. It includes the spicy curries from India and China. And it encompasses the indigenous fare of the African tribes. Alongside, the superb wines complement the special dishes. For the tourist, it offers exciting dining opportunities with such a vast variety of tastes and restaurants at hand.

    78. The Power Of Culture: Ten Years Of Democracy In South Africa
With the aim of contributing to an enabling environment for the arts, the Dutch governmentcreated a culture and development program for south africa in 1996.
    http://kvc.minbuza.nl/uk/specials/southafrica/
Exactly ten years ago in April, South Africa abolished its history of
apartheid, and opted for a future of equality and non-racism. Enough
reason to throw a birthday party for the country on the most southern tip of Africa , and to highlight the special role culture played. Because bringing about change was a task the South African art world envisaged long before Nelson Mandela was freed, as Andries Oliphant, the "father" of the first inclusive cultural policy, points out in this
special. The Netherlands sought to support the cultural infrastructure of the "new" South Africa, and established many collaborations over the past ten years, as Margriet Leemhuis, the cultural attaché of the Dutch embassy in Pretoria, explains. The four organisations the Dutch embassy worked with - the Dance Factory, the Market Theatre Laboratory, the Bag Factory, and the Film Resource Unit - show that "empowerment", "raising issues" and "changing perceptions" are still buzzwords in an art world that has found a new role for itself in the post-apartheid era. For decades, the arts in South Africa played an important role in the fight for freedom and bringing about democratic change. Social issues were captured in paintings, music and all other art forms.

    • Research, whose focus is arts, culture and development as well as the heritage resources of the center's museum and archival holdings
    • Academic programmes in African Studies and Cultural Management and Development to promote the cultural industry, culture, heritage and development in South Africa
    • Cultural production and outreach for the affirmation and promotion of heritage, culture and development
    • Custodianship of unique museum holdings and cultural heritage archives as well as the archives of South Africa's anti-apartheid liberation movements.
The Centre has truly unique heritage collections. We have over 4000 indigenous and contemporary South African artefacts that date to the 19th century. Their rich diversity and national character are unprecedented and widely acknowledged. The South African National Monuments Council has declared these collections a National Cultural Treasure. In addition, the South African art collections are some one hundred and twenty very rare and unique artefacts from Southern Africa, Central Africa and West Africa, including 18th century art works. The Archives has its own special attraction and is divided into two sections. The Cultural Heritage archive contains the largest collection of African cultural heritage records, including some of the earliest African literary tradition, especially in Xhosa, dating to the 19th century. These diverse forms of literary tradition make the collections particularly unique. Included in the collection are:
