South Africa
Introduction South Africa has a population of approximately 40 million people. Three-quarters of its population is black (African) and approximately 15% is white (European). The rest is a mixture of white, Malayan and blacks whose ancestors were of Asian descent. There are six major ethnic groups in South Africa: Afrikaner, Coloured/Cape Malay, Bantu, English, Chinese and Indian. There are 11 official languages in South Africa. Most South Africans speak English and Afrikaans, which is derived from their Dutch heritage. South Africa is considered the industrial giant of Africa. It is a substantial resource for minerals including gold, silver, copper and diamonds. Fun Fact South Africans love success stories. They admire Americans because we live what they believe is the "American Dream." www.

Flag of South Africa Background:
After the British seized the Cape of Good Hope area in 1806, many of the Dutch settlers (the Boers) trekked north to found their own republics.
The discovery of diamonds (1867) and gold (1886) spurred wealth and immigration and intensified the subjugation of the native inhabitants.
The Boers resisted British encroachments, but were defeated in the Boer War (1899-1902). The resulting Union of South Africa operated under a policy of apartheid - the separate development of the races. The 1990s brought an end to apartheid politically and ushered in black majority rule. South Africa and its Culture
Culture in South Africa is about as diverse as it can come. South Africa is a multiracial society and defining distinct subgroups by skin colour only will potentially get you into trouble. Those of Afrikaner and British descent won't be too happy to be confused with one another, and there are several major and many minor groupings in the traditional black cultures. The mingling and melding in South Africa's urban areas, along with the suppression of traditional cultures during the apartheid years, means that the old ways of life are fading, but traditional black cultures are still strong in much of the countryside. Across the different groups, marriage customs and taboos differ, but most traditional cultures are based on beliefs in a masculine deity, ancestral spirits and supernatural forces. In general, polygamy is permitted and a lobolo (dowry) is usually paid. Cattle play an important part in many cultures, as symbols of wealth and as sacrificial animals. The art of South Africa's indigenous populations can be one of the only ways to connect with lost cultures. Rock and cave paintings by the San, some of which date back 26,000 years, are a case in point. In other cases, such as the elaborate 'coded' beadwork of the Zulus, traditional art has been adapted to survive in different circumstances. Zulu is one of the strongest surviving black cultures and massed Zulu singing at Inkatha Freedom Party demonstrations is a powerful expression of this ancient culture. The Xhosa also have a strong presence; they are known as the red people because of the red-dyed clothing worn by most adults. The Ndebele are a related group, who live in the north-western corner of what is now Mpumalanga in strikingly painted houses.

... webteam@sita.co.za The Department of Arts and Culture Welcomes Minister Pallo Jordan and Deputy Minister Ntombazana Botha CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF DEMOCRACY 2004 is the 10th anniversary of South Africa's freedom. It is a time for celebration, thanksgiving and renewed commitment. The government has adopted a multisectoral approach to this milestone in the history of our country in order to ensure that all South Africans and the international community join in celebrating our democracy. The celebrations are aimed at uniting the country, marking our achievements as a nation and consolidating our democracy. They also provide an opportunity to work on our national identity and to position the country internationally. The theme for the celebrations is “a people united for a better South Africa and a better world”. This message emphasises the need for all sectors of our society to look back and take stock of what has happened in the past 10 years. As we celebrate our achievements, we should also acknowledge where things did not go as well as we would have wanted, and learn from such lessons as we proudly enter the second decade of our democracy.

LINKS PAGE With the collapse of Apartheid and the emergence of the 'African renaissance', Southern Africa is attracting rapidly growing interest from around the world for its rich and diverse cultural heritage. Humankind was born in Southern Africa approximately 3.3 million years ago with Australopithecus africanus, and every subsequent phase of our development can be traced in the region's wealth of archaeological sites. The most important of these, the so-called ' Cradle of Humankind ' (a recently declared UNESCO World Heritage Site), is a short drive outside Johannesburg and Pretoria, and showcases the various stages of our evolution in three spectacular caves. South Africa also boasts the oldest remains of our species, Homo sapiens sapiens, found in a cave in KwaZulu-Natal's Lebombo Mountains, and dated at 120,000 years old. This was most likely the first of the San bushmen, hunter-gatherers who roamed this fertile paradise for 118,000 years, endowing it with one of the world's greatest cultural treasures: well over 16,000 sites of ancient rock art , the most extensive collection on Earth.

Locations Tea is grown widely throughout southeastern China – roughlythe area south of a line from Shanghai to southern Tibet .
http://www.twinings.com/en_int/world_of_tea/southafrica_cult.html
History
The history of Chinese tea is a long and slow story of refinement. Generations of growers and producers have perfected the Chinese way of producing tea, along with its many unique regional variations.
The original idea is credited to the Emperor Shen Nung . That story is legend; all we really know is that tea-growing and tea-drinking probably began in Yunnan as a way of making boiled water palatable.
The methods of tea production practised elsewhere in the world derive from the 5,000-year Chinese lead. Although the world has moved on, the Chinese have to some extent stuck to their traditions. Chinese equipment is often antiquated; growing is often still done on a small scale by local co-operatives; and the mechanisms for buying and selling are largely state-run, although this situation has been changing rapidly over the past couple of years.
Tea for export used to be sold through a state-controlled export corporation. Nowadays, many private-enterprise organisations are involved in the export of tea. They are becoming more responsive to market forces and are helping to produce teas that are adapted to the needs of the wider world market.
Locations
Tea is grown widely throughout south-eastern China Shanghai to southern Tibet . Since ancient times, the best teas have come from mountainous regions. A total of 18 provinces are involved in tea-growing. Most grow their tea in village cooperatives.

Each time a new wave arrived the existing populations were marginalised. In the first of these waves, the pastoralist Khoikhoi moved down into the western and southern coastal regions – pushing the hunter-gatherer San inland. Who were the San
Of all the peoples of South Africa, only the San are truly indigenous – and they have been displaced and victimised by each successive wave of immigrants. Today there are but a few remnants of this once proud people in South Africa (and Botswana), and inevitably theirs is the voice least heard by government. The San were hunter-gatherers. Living in highly mobile groups of between 20 and 50, either following the game around the country – and living in close rhythm with the land and its seasons – or maintaining a more settled life along the coastal regions – and depending on seals, shellfish, crayfish, birds and the occasional beached whale, for food.
