Culture
South Africa is a multiracial society and defining distinct subgroups by skin colour only will potentially get you into trouble. Those of Afrikaner and British descent won't be too happy to be confused with one another, and there are several major and many minor groupings in the traditional black cultures. The mingling and melding in South Africa's urban areas, along with the suppression of traditional cultures during the apartheid years, means that the old ways of life are fading, but traditional black cultures are still strong in much of the countryside. Across the different groups, marriage customs and taboos differ, but most traditional cultures are based on beliefs in a masculine deity, ancestral spirits and supernatural forces. In general, polygamy is permitted and a lobolo (dowry) is usually paid. Cattle play an important part in many cultures, as symbols of wealth and as sacrificial animals. The art of South Africa's indigenous populations can be one of the only ways to connect with lost cultures. Rock and cave paintings by the San, some of which date back 26,000 years, are a case in point. In other cases, such as the elaborate 'coded' beadwork of the Zulus, traditional art has been adapted to survive in different circumstances. Zulu is one of the strongest surviving black cultures and massed Zulu singing at Inkatha Freedom Party demonstrations is a powerful expression of this ancient culture. The Xhosa also have a strong presence; they are known as the red people because of the red-dyed clothing worn by most adults. The Ndebele are a related group, who live in the north-western corner of what is now Mpumalanga in strikingly painted houses.

South Africa History
Beginning about the turn of the 20th century, more and more legislation was passed restricting the rights of nonwhites. The laws of apartheid - or separation of races - reached their peak under the Afrikaner National Party, which came to power in 1948. Blacks responded by forming the Communist-backed African National Congress, which was dedicated to ending apartheid. Continued violence, diplomatic isolation and economic boycotts forced the white government to make some concessions in the 1980s, but the apartheid laws were not scrapped until 1991, when blacks were allowed to vote in the country's first democratic elections. Nelson Mandela was then elected president on a platform of addressing South Africa's huge disparity of wealth. Progress continues under his successor, but those goals remain some way off. South Africa "cradle of human culture" The perforations of these Nassarius shells found at Blombos Cave show wear marks, indicating they were used as beads, according to Mr Henshilwood. afrol News / Chris Henshilwood, Francesco d'Errico afrol News , 20 April Archaeologists are astonished at the a record-breaking finding at the Blombos Cave, near Cape town in South Africa. 75,000 years old beads found here are the oldest evidence of "modern" cultural expressions among humans ever studied. The ornamented shells are 30,000 years older than any other known "critical modern behaviours" found at other sites, making South Africa the cradle of human culture. - This bead represents new proof that 'modern' man first lived in Africa, comments archaeologist Chris Henshilwood, programme director of the Blombos Cave Project and professor at the Centre for Development Studies of the University of Bergen, Norway's second city. "The Blombos Cave beads present absolute evidence for perhaps the earliest storage of information outside the human brain," he adds.
The perforated shells found at South Africa's Blombos Cave appear to have been strung as beads about 75,000 years ago - making them 30,000 years older than any previously identified personal ornaments. Archaeologists excavating the site on the on the coast of the Indian Ocean discovered 41 shells, all with holes and wear marks in similar positions, in a layer of sediment deposited during the Middle Stone Age.

A living legend Zulu / South Africa Culture Link: South Africa Culture
Zululand is synonomous with its rich South Africa cultural wealth amongst its indigenous population the Zulu people. The Zulus originated from a variety of nomadic bantustan tribes who were galvanised into an immense army of skilled and disciplined warriors by the famous Zulu chieftan Chaka who during his reign as King of the Zulu conquered and pacified a territory larger than Europe. Whilst this military heritage is still held with great pride amongst the Zulu they are once more a peaceful people who have preserved their rich cultural identity that is still a very important part of the Zulu's modern day lifestyle. The best way to experience this fascinating South Africa culture is to visit a cultural village where in a relitavely short space of time one can take a guided walk through a traditional homestead and gain an insight into the many aspects of this fascinating and colourful african tribe. One can expect to see Zulu dancing, bead and basket craft, visit a traditional healer and see traditional architecture and kraal design. For those with a strong constitution may like to partake in some home brewed sorghum beer and even enjoy some African barbecue cuisine after your tour. There is a cultural village near Hluhluwe River Lodge and visits can be arranged on arrival.

Introduction
People History Culture ... Communications Legal system Organization Provinces Disputes
South Africa Introduction Back to Top South Africa, Republic of, republic and southernmost country of continental Africa, bordered on the north-west by Namibia; on the north by Botswana and Zimbabwe; on the north-east by Mozambique and Swaziland; on the east and south by the Indian Ocean; and on the west by the Atlantic Ocean. The independent country of Lesotho forms an enclave in the eastern part of the country. South Africa has an area of 1,224,691 sq km (472,731 sq mi). The administrative capital of South Africa is Pretoria, the legislative capital is Cape Town, and the judicial capital is Bloemfontein. South Africa Provinces Back to Top
9 provinces; Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, North-West, Northern Cape, Northern Province, Western Cape South Africa People Back to Top The largest cities in South Africa (1995 estimate) include Cape Town (2,727,000), the legislative capital; Durban (1,264,000), the country’s leading port; Johannesburg (2,172,000 ), the commercial capital and metropolis of the goldfields; Pretoria (1,314,000), the administrative capital; and Port Elizabeth (1,035,000), an industrial city and major port. Although it is not a city, Soweto, a township outside Johannesburg, is one of the largest communities in South Africa. The 1991 census counted 596,632 residents in Soweto, but estimates have placed the population at as many as 2 million. The original Khoikhoi and San peoples of South Africa scarcely exist as distinct groups inside the country today. Other African peoples entered the country several hundred and even thousands of years ago, and their descendants today constitute about three-fourths of South Africa's population. The African population is heterogeneous, composed mainly of four linguistic groups. The largest is the Nguni, including various Ndebele, Swazi, Xhosa, and Zulu peoples, who constitute more than half the African population of the country and form the majority in many eastern and coastal regions. The second largest is Sotho-Tswana, which includes numerous Sotho, Pedi, and Tswana peoples and forms a majority in many Highveld areas. The last two are the Tsonga, or Shangaan, concentrated in Northern and Mpumalanga provinces, and the Venda, concentrated in Northern province.
