Sore Throat
General Welcome/Mission Health Centers Services Departments ... Links/Resources The warm, mucous membrane lining of the throat provides a suitable environment for invading viruses and bacteria to flourish. These organisms cause irritation and inflammation of the membrane, making the throat feel scratchy and sore. Throat inflammation due to a cold will usually diminish in 2-3 days, as the body begins to conquer the infection. In the meantime, there are some home remedies that can bring temporary relief to the throat.
Natural treatment and comfort measures
GARGLE WITH WARM SALT WATER – It helps soothe the throat and reduces swelling in the tissues. This is the safest, least expensive, and probably the more effective treatment of a sore throat. Mix a tea-spoon of salt to an 8-oz. glass of warm water. Gargle every 3-4 hours. Contrary to popular belief, gargling with aspirin dissolved in warm water is not advisable as it may cause further irritation to the membrane. You need to swallow aspirin for the body to absorb it as a pain reliever.
SIPPING WARM LIQUIDS like hot tea or soup can be soothing to the tissues of the throat and help with healing by drawing circulation to the tissues.

Sore throat
Definition: A "sore" throat is discomfort, pain, or scratchiness in the throat. A sore throat often makes it painful to swallow.
Alternative Names: Throat - sore; Burning in the throat; Pain - throat
Considerations: Sore throats are common, especially in children. Most of the time the soreness is worse in the morning and improves as the day progresses. Like colds, the vast majority of sore throats are caused by common viral infections. (This means they will NOT respond to antibiotics.) Many people have a mild sore throat at the beginning of every cold. Sore throats can result from infections in the nose or sinuses, when drainage runs down the back of the throat, especially at night. Or, the throat itself can be infected. Some viruses can cause specific types of sore throat. For example, Coxsackievirus sometimes causes blisters in the throat, especially in the late summer and early fall. Mono and the flu can also cause specific viral throat infections.

vCJD is the human form of mad cow disease
By the BBC's Matt McGrath The victims of vCJD may have succumbed to the disease because they ate contaminated beef when they were suffering from a bout of tonsillitis or a simple sore throat.
Could it be that these patients had a sore throat and they were just unlucky that they ate a sausage or a meat pie that had a lot of BSE brain associated with it? Professor Stephen DeArmond, UCSF The theory has been put forward by a leading American scientist, Professor Stephen DeArmond, from the University of California at San Francisco. He said it could explain why relatively few people had been struck down with the illness so far and why so many of those who had were under the age of 35. British researchers studying vCJD said the theory was plausible but stressed there was no experimental data to support it.

Children should not be given penicillin if they have a sore throat, doctors say.
The drug did not reduce the duration of symptoms, how long the children had off school or if the illness reoccurred. Researchers writing in the British Medical Journal said doctors should prescribe penicillin "prudently". They add that the drug should only be given to children with an acute sore throat if they are severely ill or at high risk of serious complications. This very much fits in with current thinking in general practice
Dr Mayur Lakhani, Royal College of GPs Dutch researchers studied 156 children aged four to 15 who visited their doctor with a severe sore throat. They were either given penicillin for seven days, for three days followed a dummy pill for four days, or for seven days. It was found that penicillin did not reduce the duration of symptoms, nor did it affect school attendance or recurrences of sore throat. But the researchers found penicillin could reduce the development of complications, such as throat inflammation (quinsy) or scarlet fever.

"My son DeShawn is a really smart 3 year old. He sometimes gets into things he shouldn't and gets in trouble for not listening, but he's a pretty good kid. He's really active - he usually gets up at about 7 AM, and after breakfast he disappears outside to ride his little bike or play with his brothers and sisters. He plays outside in front of the house most of the day. He talks a lot too, so when he's quiet or not acting like himself, I know something is wrong." The Problem / Clinical Presentation
"DeShawn spent the night at his godmother's house 2 days ago, and the next morning when she brought him home, he said his ear was hurting. He had a headache and fever, and wasn't very active. I asked which ear hurt, and he pointed to both of them. I called his pediatrician, and the nurse told me to bring him in. They checked him over, and at first they told me he had a special kind of ear infection, so they had to put a needle into his spine to make sure he didn't have meningitis. They admitted him to the hospital to keep an eye on him yesterday, but he got worse. He was breathing so loud that it sounded like he was snoring, and complained that his neck hurt. So his pediatrician arranged to bring him to Iowa City in the helicopter. It just happened so suddenly; I didn't think DeShawn was that sick." Clinical Physical Exam
Upon arrival at the University of Iowa, DeShawn was quiet but obviously uncomfortable and stridorous. He was afebrile with stable vital signs. Respiratory rate was 24 per minute. HEENT examination revealed his nose to have greenish discharge. Tonsils were enlarged without exudates with left greater than right and deviation of the uvula to the right. His airway was patent. His neck revealed a painful left anterior cervical and subauricular area with fullness. He had shotty bilateral anterior cervical adenopathy. His lungs were clear and the rest of his physical examination was normal.

    Definition
Sore throat, also called pharyngitis, is a painful inflammation of the mucous membranes lining the pharynx. It is a symptom of many conditions, but most often is associated with colds or influenza . Sore throat may be caused by either viral or bacterial infections or environmental conditions. Most sore throats heal without complications, but they should not be ignored because some develop into serious illnesses.
    Description
Almost everyone gets a sore throat at one time or another, although children in child care or grade school have them more often than adolescents and adults. Sore throats are most common during the winter months when upper respiratory infections (colds) are more frequent. Sore throats can be either acute or chronic. Acute sore throats are the more common. They appear suddenly and last from three to about seven days. A chronic sore throat lasts much longer and is a symptom of an unresolved underlying condition or disease, such as a sinus infection.
    Causes and symptoms
Sore throats have many different causes, and may or may not be accompanied by cold symptoms

The following information will help you care for yourself with confidence. Why is my throat sore? When your throat hurts, it's a sign your body is fighting off invaders such as germs or allergens (substances to which you're allergic). Other symptoms that often go along with sore throats are hoarseness and swollen lymph nodes in your neck. A sore throat can be caused by a viral infection such as the common cold or flu virus, or by a bacterial infection such as the streptococcus group A bacteria which is the cause of "strep throat". Other causes of sore throats include cigarette smoke, straining the voice (e.g. after shouting at a football game) or allergens, which are substances which precipitate allergies. What can I do? Your goal is to reduce discomfort and eliminate the cause of your sore throat. Consider the self-care tips below. 1. Stop smoking or at least cut down.
