Sedaka shows off musical mastery at Orleans
By Jerry Fink
Neil Sedaka might be 64, but his voice hasn't aged since he was teenage pop star in the '50s and '60s.
Sedaka vocals have remarkable range and he didn't hit a sour note in his all-but-sold-out, 90-minute performance at The Orleans' 700-seat showroom earlier this week.
The voice is as smooth, clear and strong as ever.
If you're staying away from a Sedaka show because you think he's just another performer from the glory days of rock 'n' roll who refuses to grow old, think again.
Sedaka doesn't merely sing well for his age, he sings well for any age. Nor does he merely pay tribute to himself during his concert, performing only his greatest hits, such as "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do," "Oh, Carol," "Calendar Girl" or "Happy Birthday, Sweet Sixteen." He is not a caricature of himself.

Frontman Serj Tankian's Hard Hitting Songs
With Serart , Tankian begins a new sonic exploration with fellow Armenian artist Arto Tuncboyaciyan. Flavored with Middle Eastern and Pan-African rhythms, Serart System of a Down fans may be slightly disoriented when they first hear Serart Tankian took some time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions for Playback about musical inspirations, songwriting, and performing. What is your songwriting ritual? I start writing on either the guitar, piano, bass, samples/ beats, keyboards, or vocals. Depending on the starting instrument, the song ends up in a certain place. As for lyrics, I generally cut and paste them from my poetry, though I also make a habit of writing fresh words for new music. Who or what currently inspires you to create music? Moments, people, sounds, visuals, etc., [inspire me] more than other music. There is not one single artist or album that I favor above all. I also don't have a favorite food, movie, or anything like that. Diversity doesn't include favorites. What song do you never get sick of performing and why?

http://www.dumbsheep.org/songwriting.html
Grant Van Leuven Biography From folk and bluegrass to acoustic-driven rock, from hopeful lyrics to hard-edged questions, and, from witty, humorous showmanship to times of serious contemplation, singer, songwriter, and seminarian Grant Van Leuven has performed at a variety of venues to the enjoyment of a slew of listeners for more than six years. Concert goers are led through myriad moods and perspectives by this troubadour's songs of enthusiasm and passion for life, coupled with reflections about its uncertainty, and then comforted with a peaceful resolve in the certainty of Jesus Christ. Formerly an affiliate artist with Oregon-based Incubator Creative Group, Grant's musicianship stems from a combination of strict training in piano and voice, including lessons at the prestigious Eastman School of Music (Rochester, NY) and from Denver-based Dr. Scott Martin (Ph.D., Julliard), and is fed by years of playing with various bands and worship groups. This background makes for a unique contrast of styles between fine-tuned, formal training, and a fresh, rough-edged spontaneity in his song writing and performance.

String Section recording with a synth? HOW?
String writing and string recording can be a dark mystery...just how is it done? Strings can sound awesome and really add to an arrangement or just make it sound downright amateur....how do the 'pros' do it? Read on....
Strings
The most important thing in playing any sample, and particularly strings is to play 'the section', in other words, play as if you are in the room with the violins, violas, cellos, contrabass making the sound. Ask yourself the questions: Is the studio huge [The old Number 3 at Decca, where Mantovani recorded his hundreds of Hit Records, was like a hanger...I was there last week] Is it a cosy little studio with six fiddles squeezed in and the engineer using every trick of Hit Recording to make them sound like twenty? How many strings are there in the room? How many different sections? Violins? Violas? Cellos? Arco Contrabass [bowed double bass]

The qualities that set Lowry Olafson apart from other songwriters are his smooth, calming performance style, his engaging melodies, and the way his songs hit home and move his audience to identify with other people's experiences. Add Lowry's captivating violin compositions to the mix, and you'll see why his concerts are both uplifting and entertaining. Lowry was born in Lahore, Pakistan, to a father who worked with the UN and a mother who taught piano. He began playing piano at age 5, violin at age 9, guitar and songwriting at age 11. His early musical activities included studying classical violin and singing everything from folk to operetta. Lowry supplemented his early musical career with a variety of work all across Canada. A tour of Southern Europe and Southeast Asia turned into four years in Australia, where his numerous colourful experiences added fuel for his unique stories and songs. Lowry remained in Perth for several years, where he played guitar, fiddle, and mandolin for a variety of bands, ranging from folk and country to a weird sci-fi band. He also renewed studies in violin and music composition. Lowry moved back to Canada in 1982 but continued his international touring at such events as the 1985 Australian National Folk Festival and venues like the Hong Kong Folk Club. From 1987-90, Lowry took a performing hiatus and opened a White Rock clothing store and cappuccino bar called Silly Sisters with his former wife. The popular Sunday music sessions Lowry created there enticed him to perform the songs that would later appear on his first album
