One of the important elements we covered was the Cover Letter, the letter you include with your promo kit to inform your contact about why you are sending your submission. Your Cover Letters should be simple and to the point, don't ramble and don't get too flowery. State the reason you are contacting them, like "We want a record contract" or "We're touring through your area and would like to be considered for a gig in July". Read More...

When we think in terms of the population of the world there are very few people who have the opportunity and talent to communicate their feelings and opinions to anyone beyond their immediate family, friends, or co-workers. Politicians use the electronic media. Actors do too, but they're usually speaking someone else's thoughts. Novelists and journalists, when they're allowed to speak freely, may reach a large audience but its numbers are still fairly limited.
Radio, TV, films and the Internet have become the vehicles by which most people receive information from the rest of the world. These media share a form of communication that reaches and influences people all over the planet: music, As a skilled songwriter, you wield a tremendous power to communicate to millions of people. That realization (along with your desire to prove to your relatives that you can make a living at this) should make you want to do your best.
In the next few articles I'll discuss various techniques and principles that will help you express your lyrics as effectively as possible so that when you get that opportunity to talk to the world, they'll love listening.
Simplicity
I asked hit producer John Ryan what he felt was one of the most important common denominators of successful songs. It was a question I had asked many others, and the reply is almost always the same:

THOM MOORE, the celebrated songwriting author of a multitude of songs the likes of Carolina Rua, The Scholar, Saw You Running, Still Believing, and Cavan Girl, returns to active gigging in Ireland in the company of two friends of his, the wonderful Julie Searles and Matthew Allen, the New England songwriting-performing duo who will be teaching World Music at UC Cork this spring and generally spreading their gospel of Brazilian-influenced songs throughout the country while here. THOM first met them while he was back in Los Angeles in the 80's and fell in love with their "bossa-nova guitar + two vocals stylings" during their sojourn in California, which had them performing together up and down the coast. Since that time THOM went on to work in Russia, first on the INF Treaty and then as an English professor, while Matthew and Julie pursued academic careers in music, all of them gaining insight and new music along the way. The opportunity to hear them together should not be missed, as a splendid introduction to truly alternative World-influenced American music.
In 1999 Julie and Matthew returned to New England to join the faculty at Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts. In Spring 2002 they are living in Cork while Matthew teaches music at UCC on a Fulbright fellowship. Their current performance repertoire includes folk-oriented and Latin-influenced original compositions, jazz standards, Brazilian bossa novas and sambas.

Going Wherever Her Talents Lead by Larry Kelp
Performing Songwriter September/October 1993
As the colorfully-costumed percussionist in the Tonight Show Band, she's one of the most visible musicians in the world. Yet, Vicki Randle's songwriting talents have remained behind-the-scenes. But now, with country stars calling for demos of her tunes and Branford Marsalis asking her to submit lyrics for his new album, her impressive abilities as a writer are about to take center stage. Randle has spent more than half of her 38 years on the road, playing percussion and singing duets with artists as diverse as George Benson, Kenny Loggins, and Lionel Richie. She had just gotten off the road from the last Loggins tour and was looking forward to launching her singer- songwriter career, when she got a call from Branford Marsalis inviting her to join his new Tonight Show Band. At first it put her song- writing on hold, but she is now trying to settle into a routine. "The songwriting discipline is never easy," Randle says. "I get home from The Tonight Show and I want to turn on the tube, take the dog for a walk, or read a book. Almost every time I sit down to write I go, 'Why am I doing this?' It means you don't get to have fun. And, you have to battle the voices, all those voices that say, 'You know, you're really not very good at this."' living with being the first woman ever in the Being Catholic, of mixed parentage, and female, Randle didn't run into a lot of role models for what she wanted to do in music. "I'm still band on The Tonight Show," she says. "Others tell me it's a triumph, but I think it's horrible. I know so many great women players who could be working, but aren't hired. This is 1993, and the inequity continues. "

Mastering is widely misunderstood, often mangled, and sometimes
mistaken for mixing. So, what is mastering? It's the audio step
that comes just before manufacturing a CD. Some people would
even say it's a crucial step.
Once you have finished recording and mixing your songs, the tracks are shaped, sculpted, scooped, equalized, compressed, and finessed into sonic splendor (well, you hope) through the audio process known as mastering. Mastering is what gives depth, punch, clarity and volume to your tracks. It is part science, part craft, and part alchemy. . . just like songwriting, singing, performing and recording. "Loud vs. Proud." Contrary to popular belief, mastering is only a little about

"Music Publishing" by Tim Whitsett is a value tool to understanding, filing, and starting up any goals in the music industry. The biography of the author is amazing and what he shares through his years of being as music publisher is invaluble. At first look I was skeptical and assumed that my many other books would cover the information in here. I was wrong, this book is detail in, not only, what music publishing is, but how to publish music. The slant of the author is clear when he states th...

Musical Improv Comedy: Creating Songs in the Moment

I work in film at Warner Bros and wanted to find some ways to get my creative "fun" side going when not working. I've always been a fan of making up songs as well as acting and improvisation. I started doing work at Second City and really enjoyed the musical improv games, and discovered, through a great referal, this musical improv book by Michael Pollock.I can't tell you it will change your life because I don't know you, but I will say that it opened me up to such a wonderful creative side o...
