Standing on the sidelines as Somalia bleeds
For far too long, the international community has refused to become involved in ending the civil war in Somalia. Instead, it has ceded its role as peacemaker to an incompetent and divided regional organization, the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development, made up of seven East African countries. Unfortunately, the authority's members - especially Ethiopia - have proved more interested in exploiting Somalia's misery for their own purposes than in bringing about peace. It's time for the world to step in.

Collecting in Somali country The heartland of Moringa diversity is in northeast Africa, where the countries of Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia meet Locals call the place where the countries meet "border point one" and is shown in photo 1. Somalia is to the right of the dirt road, Kenya to the left, and Ethiopia beyond the Dawa River, which is visible as a green strip in the distance. This area is also part of the heartland of Somali culture. This area has always fascinated me, both for its biology and for its unique culture. I found the local people to be wonderfully hospitable, sometimes almost to excess. Often the first time I came to a village I was invited to feast on goat or camel and drink spiced tea with local authorities (2. in Mandera and 3. in Yabicho). Rural Somalis know the local flora intimately, so discussions with them proved to be invaluable in locating previously undocumented populations of Moringa (photo 4). I also found the reputation for the area being dangerous to be justified in certain regions, particularly on the Kenya-Somalia border, where it was necessary to travel with soldiers (photo 5). Photo 6 shows me preparing dried, pressed herbarium specimens of

With that in mind, the Maine Humanities Council was a major funder of a A Somali Alphabet /Alfabeetadda Soomaaliyeed, a bilingual primer that illustrates each letter of the Somali alphabet with a word characteristic of Somali life. From B for Babaay (papaya) - the alphabet follows the Arabic order - to U for Uunsi (incense), the paperback book includes explanatory texts in both English and Somali. Written by Nadifo Ayanle and illustrated by Melissa Girardin, the primer should appeal to a variety of audiences. These include adult Somalis learning to read English, English-speaking Mainers interested in learning about Somali life, and young Somalis whose rapid Americanization means they may have lost some links with their traditional Islamic culture, including its language. The book is produced by the African Women's Literacy Project, part of the programming of Portland Adult Education. Through the project, Somali mothers with babies or toddlers receive tutoring in their homes. Storytelling is used both to explore and celebrate Somali culture and to provide a basis for English instruction.

For this radio series, I wanted to know whether it's possible to speak about human rights in an interesting way.
Article 1: All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

A Poem and a Song on Human Rights
In Kenya, where there is a large Somali community, I met Ahmed Hussein, a poet. I asked him if he could write a poem based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). It is seven minutes long because he wanted to cover every article. His words are very moving. This is an excerpt:
The thirty articles on human rights have been agreed to all over the world; I will explain each and every one to you; hold on to it tight and do not let it slip.

SOJON, the Somali Journalists' Network, has launched an extensive new web resource for the country's professional journalists.
The site will provide training, support and information on press freedom issues in Somalia, and will also act as a central information point for researchers and journalists around the world.
"SOJON was initially established in 2002 for internet journalists, but also provides a public face for all Somali journalists," said Omar Faruk Osman, secretary general of SOJON.

Peacekeeping Tragedy
An examination into events surrounding the death of a Somali boy who was tortured by Canadian peacekeepers in March 1993 has revealed that the military unit involved received inadequate training as peacekeepers and little orientation to Somali culture, says Donna Winslow, professor of anthropology at the University of Ottawa. Winslow, a researcher for the Canadian parliament's Commission of Inquiry into the Deployment of Forces to Somalia, discussed some of the commission's early findings at the Institute July 3. The Canadian Airborne Regiment was a highly insulated group, separate not only from civilian society but in some ways from the rest of the military, Winslow said. Due to their lack of training for peacekeeping operations, they sometimes responded inappropriately to the general mores of Somali culture. The tragedy of the boy's death highlights the crucial role of training in preparing military units for peacekeeping operations.
Small Countries as Peacekeepers
Small and neutral countries have always been important contributors of forces to peacekeeping operations, says senior fellow Erwin Schmidl, a military historian with the Austrian Ministry of Defense. He discussed his fellowship project, an overview of peace operations, at a work-in-progress talk June 26, where he reviewed in particular the composition of forces and the role of troop contributors. Small countries tend to have greater respect for international organizations such as the United Nations and their positive role in world politics, Schmidl noted. Nevertheless, it is the high standards of professionalism many of these countries have established for their forces rather than their political reputation that makes them so welcome as troop contributors, he concluded.

And I Say
A Taste of Africa is my online journal intended to update my family and friends about my life as a development worker in this part of the Horn of Africa. I am in Somaliland, a country longing for an international recognition. I started blogging during the time when I was on the verge of becoming burnt out. Writing became my therapy, my outlet. When I was applying in becoming a development worker for a skills share program, I never heard of Somaliland, I searched and searched for information. Most of the articles I came across were negative information about Somalia and Somaliland. Information that seems alien to people without a good grasp of the African context I wanted to know more about the life and place called Somaliland, I found none. Thus, I decided to put my stories online. For my friends, family and for those who like me, wanted to know more Join us in our work in Somaliland
Somaliland has one of the lowest literacy level in the world, not because they don't want to learn but because they couldn't afford to go to school. Young Somalilanders only need $5 to go to a vocational school run by Candlelight a local NGO in Burao and Hargeisa we are currently assisting. It is schools like these that keep learning alive in this country. A country where 1 out of 5 children do not live to see their 5th birthday, where maternal mortality is the highest in the world. A country where the people choose to survive by maintaining the fragile peace stability. Commend their steadfast spirit of survival and be a part of making this country rise from the wreckage of war.
