Raising Children In the Diaspora: Some Suggestions
Several years ago, I attended a wedding while visiting Somalia. I was "hanging out" in the bride's bedroom with various other female friends and family members who were helping with last minute arrangements. As I was listening to the buzz of the different conversations going on simultaneously in the room, I was struck by the diversity of languages being spoken. In one corner, two teenagers were talking excitedly in Dutch. A women nearby was scolding her young son in Arabic. Other languages heard in the room include Swedish, Swahili and English. I could only but reflect on the vast expansiveness of the Somali diaspora. As a Somali living abroad, I often wonder what the future holds for us. Will Somali communities form the tight knit bonds that hold cultures together as is often the case for East Indians and Chinese? Or will we completely assimilate into our host countries, adopting the dominant beliefs and value systems? It is a question we need to be asking ourselves, especially as many Somalis begin to have families and settle down in the West. The stark reality is that the children of the next generation will be more English, Dutch, American, Canadian, or Australian (among many others) than Somali. It is highly unlikely that these children will be able to speak Somali well, let alone understand the deep poetry and music of our rich culture.

These ancestral tribes include, among others, the Makua and Yao of southern Tanzania and northern Mozambique; the Ngindo of southern Tanzania; the Nyasa of southern Tanzania, northern Mozambique, and northern Malawi; and the Zaramo and Zigua of northeast Tanzania. Other southeast African tribes represented among the Bantu refugees include the Digo, Makale, Manyawa, Nyamwezi, and Nyika. The Bantu slated for resettlement, especially those who fled the once forested Juba River valley, are politely referred to as Wagosha ("people of the forest") or Jareer (term used to describe Africans with hard or kinky hair). FOOD The main meal of the day is eaten at midday; morning and evening meals are lighter. People usually begin the day with a flat bread called Anjeeero, liver, toast, cereal or porridge made of millet or cornmeal. The midday meal consists of rice or noodles with sauce and perhaps meat. Beef is less popular than goat or camel meat. In Somalia, certain cuts of meat are considered suitable for men, while others are reserved for women and children. The evening meal is very light and might include beans, muffo (patties made of oats or corn), or a salad with more Anjeero. Special tea is the favourite drink, but sheep, goat and camel's milk are also popular. Cow's milk is used only when the others are not available.

    Geography
Somalia is a long, narrow country that wraps around the Horn of Africa. It has the longest coast of any African nation, bordering on both the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. The inland areas are predominantly plateaus, with the exception of some rugged mountains in the far north. The northern region is more arid, whereas the southern portion of the country receives more rainfall. Many Somalis are nomadic or semi-nomadic herders, some are fishermen, and some farmers. Mogadishu is the capital and largest city.
    History and Politics
Unlike many African nations, Somalia is composed of a single, homogeneous ethnic group. Although Somalis may differ in nuances of local lifestyle, they share a uniform language, religion, and culture, and trace their heritage to a common ancestor. In 1977 Djibouti received independence from the French. Although the government of Djibouti chose not to reunite with Somalia, ties between the countries remain close, as the citizens share a common culture and language. Travel is permitted freely across the border without a visa.

A small minority of Bantu-speaking people live in the southern part of the country. Other minority groups include Arabs, Indians, Italians, and Pakistanis. Some 70 percent of the people are nomadic or seminomadic pastoralists. The remainder are either crop farmers or inhabitants of the few urban centers. Somalia History Back to Top The history of the region now included in Somalia dates from antiquity, when the land was known to the ancient Egyptians as Punt. From the 2nd to the 7th century ad parts of the area belonged to the Ethiopian kingdom of Aksum. Arab tribes in the 7th century settled along the coast of the Gulf of Aden and established the sultanate of Adal, which centered on the port of Zeila. The Somali people began slowly to migrate into this region from Yemen in the 9th century. The sultanate disintegrated during the 16th century into small independent states, many of which were ruled by Somali chiefs. Zeila became a dependency of Yemen, and was then captured by the Ottoman Empire.
