Its military name, Operation Deliverance, has almost lofty connotations. When the 900 Canadian soldiers land in Somalia on Dec. 15, 1992, they will try to draw order from the chaos. As shown in this CBC report, famine and civil war are ravaging this small African country. Next Printer-friendly page Send this page to a friend

The Somalia Affair
At one time, Somalia was highly coveted for its geographical location, situated near oil wells in the Persian Gulf and along the ship routes from the Indian Ocean to the Red Sea. The country was released from its history of British and Italian imperial rule in 1960, but when Maj. Gen. Mohammed Siad Barré seized power in 1969, Somalia entered a new era of undemocratic rule. At the dawn of the Cold War, Somalia aligned itself with the Soviet Union. Previous Next Printer-friendly page Send this page to a friend ...
The Somalia Affair
Soviet money, along with powerful weapons, flowed into the country to seal the partnership. But, in 1977 Somalia engaged in a border dispute with Ethiopia and the Soviet superpower dropped their alliance. The United States subsequently cemented a coalition with Somalia, sending over weapons and foreign aid. As the Cold War thawed, however, the partnership weakened and the United States withdrew. Clan warfare within the country intensified as powerful Cold War weaponry fell into rebel hands in a struggle for power. As infrastructure and order collapsed, famine spread through the country.

Canadian peacemakers were lauded as heroes when they went into an untamed land ruled by rebels. Their mission, Operation Deliverance, charged them with restoring order in Somalia. But in fact, the Canadian Airborne regiment was splitting apart at the seams, lacking both leadership and accountability. Murder after murder, the troops came home disgraced. Tracks were covered and responsibility shifted up and down the chain of command during an investigation that would dismantle the army and implicate the government in a high-level cover-up.

II. DRESS IN SOMALI TRADITION In Islamic tradition, the form of dress is important for Somali women and men. For example, Women should wear HIJAB which is a dress that covers the body except for the hands and face. Men should also wear clothes that cover the body between waist and knees according to the tradition. They should both start dressing this way when they are between seven and nine years old. Somali parents teach their kids how to dress before they reach the age of maturity or puberty. With these traditions in mind, Somali families have the following expectations from the American schools: a) That the schools should separate the girls from the boys when they have mixed or body-touching activities such as swimming class.
    b) That the schools should allow the Somali girls to dress in uniforms that reflect their culture if the school has uniforms.
    c) That the schools should give options to the students, especially girls, about any activity related to dress, for example, playing baseball or going to the school gym with sports dress. This should not be obligatory for the girls who do not want to participate.
    d) That the schools should consult with students’ parents should any conflict related to dress come up.

Somalia's gun culture the bane of peace
    By Ali Musa Abdi
    NAIROBI SOMALIAN WOMEN PROTEST VIOLENCE
With almost every able-bodied male in Somalia possessing a gun, the truce signed by faction leaders on Sunday is seen more as a symbolic gesture than a guarantee that peace will suddenly return after more than a decade of bloodletting. Freelance gunmen are largely young adults or teenagers who owe no allegiance to any of Somalia's numerous warlords or leaders of armed clan-based factions. "All armed men in a faction are not answerable to a leader," Liban Sheikh Ahmed, a militia leader in central Mogadishu's Bermuda neighborhood, said on Tuesday. "The boss of a faction is not automatically the owner of the guns and battle wagons claimed by his faction." In some cases, one "battle wagon" can be co-owned by several groups: the gunmen who stole the vehicle, those who brought the machinegun and those who pay for repairs. The fact that most of Somalia's armed groups are not clearly defined is also expected to make it difficult to apportion blame during inevitable outbreaks of violence. Some businessmen are known to have their own armories or to finance clan warriors, Ahmed said.

Country Info Somalia Introduction Somalia General Data Somalia Maps Somalia Culture ... Somalia Time and Date Somalia Culture Back to Top The Somalis are a culturally, linguistically, and religiously homogeneous people, who are divided along clan lines and sparsely scattered over a harsh, dry land. There are significant distinctions among sectors of the population, related in part to variations in means of livelihood. In the early 1990s, roughly 60 percent of an estimated population of more than 8.4 million were still nomadic pastoralists or seminomadic herders, subject to the vicissitudes of an arid climate. Twenty to 25 percent of the people were cultivators, most living in the southern half of the country, on or between Somalia's two major rivers, the Jubba and the Shabeelle. The remainder were town dwellers, the vast majority of whom resided in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu. With the fall of General Mahammad Siad Barre's regime on January 27, 1991, and the ensuing internal warfare that resulted in the disintegration of the Somali state, patterns of residency changed dramatically. For instance, the population of Mogadishu, estimated at 500,000 in the mid-1980s, witnessed the influx of thousands of refugees. As a result, Mogadishu reportedly had about 2 million inhabitants in early 1992. Throughout the country the civil war, along with the lawlessness as Siad Barre's regime collapsed and the absence of functioning governmental and social institutions, produced a chaotic situation.
