Solomon Islands Tours Overview
In the Solomons, they talk about "The Islands of Pride," a reference not only to their country's natural beauty, but also to the people's contributions to the Allied cause in World War II. Some of the war's bloodiest battles took place in this idyllic setting of glimmering lagoons, orchid-laden jungles, thundering waterfalls, forested peaks and thatched-hut villages. The islanders, like the Allied and Japanese forces, suffered dearly during the war. Unfortunately, war has returned to the islands, only this time the islanders have turned their guns on each other. Civil war, ignited by ethnic rivalry, has created havoc in the country for the past three years, gradually destroying infrastructure and the economy. Gunfights between warlords are common, along with armed criminal activity. Even nature has proven dangerous: The seldom-visited islands of Tikopia and Anuta suffered heavy damage from a cyclone in late December 2002. Right now, with little law and order and the country on the verge of bankruptcy, the Solomons are a destination to avoid.

The Flag of the Solomon Islands Maps Flags The flag of the Solomon Islands is divided horizontally by a thin yellow line that runs from the upper right to the lower left. The top/left side is blue with five, five-pointed white stars; the right/bottom is green. The white stars represent the five main groups of islands in the Solomon Islands. The yellow represents sunshine, the blue represents water, and the green represents land. The Solomon Islands flag was adopted on November 18, 1977, just before the islands became independent from Great Britain (Independence Day was on July 7, 1978). Each year, Flag Day is celebrated in the Solomon Islands on November 18. Solomon Islands: Overview
The Solomon Islands has been called the last Paradise on Earth. In addition to containing one of the most friendly and peaceful populations of the planet, the Solomon Islands offers an amazing array of natural wonders. Nowhere on earth will you find the variety and immense possibilities to see earth in its natural splendor.
The Solomon Islands are made up of more than 990 islands, which together cover a land mass of 28,000 square kilometres. The main islands are Choiseul, Guadalcanal, Santa Isabel,
San Cristobal, Rennell and Bellona, Malaita and New Georgia. Volcanoes with varying degrees of activity are situated on some of the larger islands, while many of the smaller islands are simply tiny atolls covered in sand and palm trees. The Solomon Islands are far more accessible than perhaps imagined. With non-stop service from Los Angeles to Fiji, one more flight and a little adventurous spirit will reward you with a South Pacific destination that is truly off the beaten path. Located a few degrees off the equator, the Solomon Islands are a tropical destination. A Japanese stronghold in World War II and home of the famous Battle of Guadalcanal, the Solomon Islands now offers the traveler a rich nature, adventure and cultural vacation destination and filled with World War II history. These islands are rapidly being discovered for their world class diving opportunities.

In August 1943 the Japanese destroyer Amagiri rammed skipper John F. Kennedy's U.S. Navy patrol torpedo boat PT-109' s still-floating bow. The next afternoon they swam for several hours to reach this tiny island.
Despite its lush appearance, Kennedy Island, as it is now known, was lacking in food and devoid of fresh water. The survivors were soon weary from heat, hunger, and most of all, thirst.
