Self-government was achieved in 1976 and independence two years later. Current issues include government deficits, deforestation, and malaria control.

The main islands are New Georgia, Vella Lavella, Kilembanara (a dormant volcano), Gizo, Vangunu, Rendova and Tetepere. They are surrounded by coral reefs and includes the largest salt water lagoon in the world: Marovo lagoon.
