Jane Resture's Oceania Page was developed to present and highlight an extended range of material in conjunction with Jane's Oceania Home Page . In doing this, it will allow the visitor to readily access information about the Pacific Islands. As the sun rises over the vast expanse of Oceania, the daily lives of many of the people of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia (including the Polynesian nation of Hawai'i ) go on as they have for thousands of years. The fishermen are already at sea; the toddy cutters are already at work and the men and women are working in their gardens. The singing of traditional and contemporary songs can be heard all around from the early morning, until the evenings come alive right through until late at night. It is this love of traditional singing passed from generation to generation that binds many islanders together and forms the basis of much of island cultural heritage and in particular dancing. Both the songs and the dance are unique and their performance tells the stories of life and love in a manner that consumes both the dancers and the audience. The traditional life of the people of Oceania is basically uncomplicated. They are normally happy, highly intelligent, kind, generous and loving people who have inherited a culture that is ancient, complex, diverse, very functional and beautiful. Let us hope that through these Web pages, visitors will be able to enjoy our relaxed and happy lifestyle as well as our rich and complex cultural heritage.

" An important feature of Solomon Islands, as with Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu, is the tremendous range of cultural diversity. This is exemplified by the fact that there are 87 distinct languages and numerous dialects shared by a population of about 400,000 people. This population is further divided by ethnicity - about 94 per cent are Melanesians, 4 per cent are Polynesians, with the other 2 per cent Micronesian, Chinese, European and other. Because of the diversity of languages, Pidgin ( Pijin as it is known in the Solomons), developed as a lingua franca and, although English is the official language of education, commerce, the media and government administration, Pidgin. is spoken by the majority of the population of Solomon Islands for everyday communications. Pijin is similar to Papua New Guinea Tok Pisin and Vanuatu Bislama.

Press Release: World Society for the Protection of Animals
Protests grow over expected shipment of Solomon Island dolphins New Zealand and Australia are being urged to intervene to prevent wild-caught dolphins from being exported from the Solomon Islands. It is estimated that up to 200 dolphins have been taken from the wild by local fishermen in response to a bounty of $400 per dolphin. To date, this is the largest capture of wild dolphins ever recorded. It is feared that the aircraft that will transport these dolphins has already landed in the Solomon Islands, and that shipment will commence shortly. With New Zealand and Australia on the verge of dispatching interventionist forces to the Solomon Islands, the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) is urging both governments to use their influence to ensure that immediate action is taken to return all the dolphins back to the wild, subject to any necessary health checks. According to local media reports, fisherman have been taking the dolphins from the water and holding them in small sea cages on the island of Gela, off the capital, Honiara. Once caught, dolphins may travel for hours by open boat before reaching these cages; journeys that are excruciating for these marine mammals, as their internal organs are susceptible to being damaged by their body weight once out of the water. A crocodile has already killed one captured dolphin and there have been reports of further deaths. WSPA fears that the death toll could rise significantly as stress-induced illness, improper care and malnutrition take their toll.

News Release For immediate release: Tuesday 22nd July 2003 Solomon Islands Dolphin Trade Confirmed As Illegal
New evidence that the Guadalcanal Provincial government did not give approval for the export trade in wild dolphins confirms that the capture and subsequent import of the Solomon Islands dolphins to Mexico was illegal. Documents obtained by the World Society for Protection of Animals (WSPA) also show that the government had grave concerns about the practice and called for a stop to export licences as far back as March this year. WSPA has forwarded the documents to the New Zealand Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, as well as to other government departments in the Pacific region. "Twenty-eight dolphins arrived in Mexico overnight and there are up to another 170 still in sea cages in the Solomon Islands ," says WSPA Australia/New Zealand Regional Director Georgia Stephenson. "At least four dolphins have died as a direct result of being incarcerated in the makeshift sea cages and eyewitness accounts have confirmed that the dolphins still in captivity in the Solomons are not being fed enough or being given proper care." Any foreign venture in the Solomons must have approval from both the central and provincial government to carry out its business. This material verifies that a Provincial Business Licence from Guadalcanal Province - which makes up the main island, including Honiara, from where the majority of the dolphins have been caught -

Solomon IslandsForest Crisis Documented by Australian Radio
From Worldwide Forest/Biodiversity Campaign News. January 27, 1996
Following is an unofficial transcription of a Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) radio program concerning the resource plunder occurring in the South Pacific in general, and the Solomon Islands in particular. Forestry issues have been having a much higher profile in the region, with the Australian Government recently cutting off forest aid to the Solomon Islands on the basis of harvest rates twice the sustainable level, on a very small resource base. The following item was transcribed by an Australian journalist from the ABC radio program, and I am sending it on exactly as received. It is a SENSATIONAL article, and one you should take the time to read.
