I've been drawn to islands all my life. I was born on an island, but moved when I was just two years-old and raised in a small mining town inland. I presently live in a Colombian city even further inland, but I am drawn to islands and coastal places, and always experience a special sense of freedom when I'm near an ocean or sea. Newfoundland, Fiji, Kyushu, Cuba and Che-ju-do are a few islands I've been on, all beautiful and unique in their own ways, but I'd like to tell you about a country that actually uses the word in its name: the Solomon Islands Among the smallest countries in the world, the Solomons are made up of hundreds of tiny islands which combined have a mass of just 27,557 sq km. The tropics of the South Pacific are magnificent.

Solomon Islands attracts immense interest from the international community due to the uniqueness, diversity and biological significance of its natural environment. Solomon Islands' forests form part of the belt of tropical rainforest that covers only 7 percent of the Earth's surface but that accommodates 70 percent to nearly 90 percent of all species of plants and animals. Next to PNG, Solomon Islands has a greater diversity of land-based species and a higher level of endemism than any other Pacific island nation. Some examples of Solomons' biodiversity are:
  • Birds: Solomon Islands has a very high degree of bird endemism. Of the 163 species of land birds that breed in Solomon Islands, 44 are found nowhere else in the world. For example, the Zosterops spp: the 'white eyes'. Populations of distinct species of white-eyes can be found on all the major islands - sometimes with different species inhabiting different types of forest - and on some of the smaller islands. Ghizo Island, approximately 30 sq.km, is home to the Ghizo White-eye

The author was very detailed in his various reports of the battles and accurate. His description of the battle fields and terrain were exactly what I remembered. He wrote about the "grunts" their feelings and miseries - the heroes and those not quite as heroics. He pulled no strings for marines or soldiers or sailors. He called the shots. He was so detailed in his reporting that I swear he must have been there. I recommend this to veterans of that campaign especially. Solomon Islands
    History
It is thought that the first inhabitants of the Solomon Islands arrived from the north-west about 30,000 years ago, but the first organised agricultural people didn't settle until about 4000 BC, bringing with them knowledge of sailing, crops and animal breeding. Between that time and about 1600 AD, westward migration by Polynesians and the arrival of the Lapita people from the east created a heady mix of cultural practices in the region. Finding the main islands already occupied by Melanesians, the newcomers settled on the smaller, isolated islands, eliminating any small populations that happened to be in the way. For the next four hundred years, these outlying areas became the focus of Tongan and Tokelauan aggression, resulting in a natural fear of strangers. By the 19th century, this fear produced the widespread habit (rarely practiced today) of attacking strangers on sight. Due largely to bad mapping, Europeans stayed away from (that is, couldn't find) the Solomons for the next century and a half. In 1767, British captain Philip Cartaret stumbled through the island group. He couldn't believe that he'd rediscovered the Solomons, but the people who followed - an assortment of British, French and American explorers, whalers and traders - certainly left their mark in the area. Large-scale traders cut short the Islands' 'Great Peace' with their shonky business practices (robbery, murder) and diseased bodies. The islanders quickly grew to hate the traders, and would often kill any white person they saw. Add firearms into this mix of headhunting, 'labour recruitment' (blackbirding) and distrust, and the Solomon Islands quickly gained the reputation for being the most inhospitable place in the Pacific. Even the unstoppable missionaries watched their step.

    Solomon Islands Tours Overview
In the Solomons, they talk about "The Islands of Pride," a reference not only to their country's natural beauty, but also to the people's contributions to the Allied cause in World War II. Some of the war's bloodiest battles took place in this idyllic setting of glimmering lagoons, orchid-laden jungles, thundering waterfalls, forested peaks and thatched-hut villages. The islanders, like the Allied and Japanese forces, suffered dearly during the war. Unfortunately, war has returned to the islands, only this time the islanders have turned their guns on each other. Civil war, ignited by ethnic rivalry, has created havoc in the country for the past three years, gradually destroying infrastructure and the economy. Gunfights between warlords are common, along with armed criminal activity. Even nature has proven dangerous: The seldom-visited islands of Tikopia and Anuta suffered heavy damage from a cyclone in late December 2002. Right now, with little law and order and the country on the verge of bankruptcy, the Solomons are a destination to avoid.

    THE SOLOMON ISLANDS
    The Solomons
are only three hours flying time from Australia, yet receive less than 5, 000 tourists per year, many of them divers. The country has shied away from mass tourism and sprawling luxury resorts in favour of small-scale ecotourism facilities run by local operators and village communities. Ecotourism in the Solomons focuses on the unspoiled natural environment (both above and below the waterline) and the age-old Island cultures.
The people are mainly Melanesian and number around half a million. Since gaining independence from Britain in 1977, the country has been governed by a Westminster-style parliament with 50 members. Ninety percent of the people still lead subsistence lifestyles in rural villages on the dozen or so larger, mountainous islands. Hundreds of smaller islands lie uninhabited.
The capital, Honiara, is a bustling industrial town of some 50,000 residents, and serves as a jumping-off point for travellers venturing out to sample the attractions of the various island provinces. Divers tend to head for the Western Province, where reefs are pristine and plenteous and the sunken remains of WW2 ships and aircraft remain undisturbed in shallow waters. Cultural tourists are well catered for in Malaita, which still has isolated bush villages virtually unchanged since last century. Brides are still paid for with shell money and pigs, and the elders tells stories of their encounters with magic men and giants.

INTRODUCTION TO VILLAGE STAY Village stay is a warts-and-all travel experience particularly suited to the Solomons, where villages are safe and friendly, and the traditional lifestyle is still widely practised. Village stay gives visitors the opportunity to experience the local culture first hand by actually staying in a village-style house, trying out traditional foods and observing or joining in on day to day village activities. Village hosts also accompany their guests on excursions away from the village for sightseeing or recreation. Who better to show you the local attractions than the people who live there? Naturally the standard of accommodation and facilities in villages cannot compete with resort hotels: some aspects of comfort and convenience must be compromised. But only a village stay can offer visitors a real insight into the culture and lifestyle of the Solomon Islanders. Ecotourism Melanesia offers a selection of village stays located in various provinces across the Solomons. Each village stay is independently operated by a bona fide village family. Established in 1996, our network of village stays is the first village ecotourism venture of its type in the South Pacific, giving local villagers an opportunity to earn limited cash income without selling their customary lands to developers or turning to environmentally damaging practices such as rainforest logging. To minimise the impact of visitors on the village culture, limits are placed on the number of guest arrivals at each village stay. Each village stay accepts only one booking at a time, up to a limit of 10 nights per month, so that the hosts can retain their primary identity as villagers rather than hoteliers. The upside of this for guests is that they do not have to "share" their village with other tourists.

    Solomon Islands, U.N. Doc. E/C.12/1/Add.33 (1999).
    1. The Committee considered the state of implementation by Solomon Islands of the economic, social and cultural rights contained in the Covenant at its 9th meeting held on 30 April 1999 (twentieth session) and adopted, at its 24th meeting, held on 11 May 1999, the following concluding observations.
    A. Introduction
    2. At its seventh session, the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights decided to proceed to a consideration of the state of implementation of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in a number of States parties which, despite many requests to do so, had not fulfilled their reporting obligations under articles 16 and 17 of the Covenant. 3. The purpose of the reporting system established by the Covenant is for the States parties to report to the competent monitoring body, the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and through it to the Economic and Social Council, on the measures which have been adopted, the progress made, and the difficulties encountered in complying with the rights recognized in the Covenant. Non-performance by a State party of its reporting obligations, in addition to constituting a breach of the Covenant, creates a severe obstacle to the fulfilment of the Committee's functions. Nevertheless, the Committee has to perform its supervisory role in such a case and must do so on the basis of all reliable information available to it.

Nowhere on earth will you find the variety and immense possibilities to see earth in its natural splendor.
The Solomon Islands are made up of more than 990 islands, which together cover a land mass of 28,000 square kilometres. The main islands are Choiseul, Guadalcanal, Santa Isabel,
San Cristobal, Rennell and Bellona, Malaita and New Georgia. Volcanoes with varying degrees of activity are situated on some of the larger islands, while many of the smaller islands are simply tiny atolls covered in sand and palm trees. The Solomon Islands are far more accessible than perhaps imagined. With non-stop service from Los Angeles to Fiji, one more flight and a little adventurous spirit will reward you with a South Pacific destination that is truly off the beaten path. Located a few degrees off the equator, the Solomon Islands are a tropical destination.
