Solomon Islands is an amazing collection of almost 1000 islands lying to the south of Papua New Guinea. over half of the islands remain uninhabited and many are in secluded groups far from the main centre of Guadalcanal Honiara is the capital, a cowboy town of drunks and high crime. Guadalcanal was a major battle zone during world war two and many wartime relics and historical points remain. The Solomon Islands boast some of the most spectacular scuba diving reefs in the world and are renowned for its abundance of soft corals and wreck diving.
The tourist infrastructure is very limited making exploring the many islands a time consuming and often challenging affair. However, the adventurous will be rewarded with some of the most spectacular sights in the South Pacific and an extremely traditional, and tribal culture.

War and peace
They stand as a poignant legacy of the Solomon Islands' wartime role, but the numerous military wrecks are also alive with fascinating marine life, as John Bantin discovers

The Solomon Islands - and particularly Guadalcanal - were the stage on which the turning-point of the Pacific War was enacted. Lying north of Australia and east of the other great landmass that includes Papua New Guinea, the islands saw some of World War Two's fiercest fighting.
The Imperial Japanese war machine had swept round the Pacific rim and was threatening the security of Australasia itself. It was here that the Americans and her allies determined to turn the tide of the war.
The conflict, which later became known as the Battle of Guadalcanal, mainly revolved around the "Tokyo Express" - nightly high-speed convoys of ships attempting to supply the beleaguered Japanese occupiers. So many ships were sunk that the channel between Guadalcanal and the northern islands is now called Ironbottom Sound.
At one time, more than 17,000 US marines faced 12,000 Japanese troops on the very small island of Guadalcanal, separated only by impenetrable jungle. It became a battle for air superiority. Today you can still see the remains of some of the planes - Zeros and Dauntlesses, Wildcats and B17s - lying in the undergrowth or on the seabed.

Vanuatu has a very rich and diverse cultural tradition which can be seen through dance, ceremonies, artifacts and architecture. Many traditions are still maintained and are incorporated into everyday life in the Islands. Within Vanuatu's Cultural Series, this se-tenant strip of stamps shows a range of masks from different islands in Vanuatu from Epi northwards. The southern group of islands do not use masks and tend to use face and body paint instead. Masks are used for several reasons, in dance, grade taking ceremonies or secret societies as part of the strong traditional structure within Vanuatu. The variety of masks is enormous in terms of design and materials which can be wood, plant fibres, moulded clay and even cobwebs. The masks can take the form of the human face or spirits and sometimes have animals, fish or bird forms as part of the design and vary from covering the face to the whole body like a cloak as part of the overall costume. The less ritually important masks can be re-used, but others are destroyed after the ceremony to retain the spirituality of the occasion. The masks shown in this issue can be seen at the Cultural Centre in Port Vila. The Fijians still retain many of their traditional customs, one of the most important being the "Yaqona" ceremony as seen in the $3.00 stamp. This formal ceremony precedes any event of importance and is a mark of great honour and respect to the recipient. The brew has slight narcotic properties and is made from the pounded root of "Piper Methysticum" mixed with water. In other Pacific countries Yaqona is known as Kava.

Successful culture and release of trochus in Solomon Islands
Phillip J. Clarke and Toru Komatsu
Overseas Fishery Cooperation Foundation (OFCF), Sankaido Building, 9-13, Akasaka 1, Minato-Ku, Tokyo 107-0052, Japa n
Introduction
Between 1997 and 2000 the Japanese Overseas Fishery Cooperation Foundation (OFCF) and ICLARM - The World Fish Centre worked together in Solomon Islands on a joint program to develop methods for restocking trochus. Restocking with cultured individuals is often seen as an impractical fishery management tool for trochus due to the expense of the hatchery and rearing systems needed to raise juveniles to a size where they survive in acceptable numbers when released on reefs (Heslinga 1981; Nash 1988; Amos 1991, 1997; Crowe et al. 1997; Lee et al. 1998). The option of reducing costs by releasing trochus at a smaller size has also been problematic due to high rates of predation on juveniles. It is now widely accepted that the larger the juvenile trochus are when released, the higher the rate of survival (Nash 1987; Castell 1995; Isa et al.
