5. Build A Solar System
JavaScript calculator of sizes and distances of solar system bodies for making a scale model.
http://www.exploratorium.edu/ronh/solar_system/
Make a scale model of the Solar System and learn the REAL definition of "space."
This Page requires a JavaScript capable browser.
WebTV's Javascript is broken and will not calculate properly!
  • Fill in the diameter of the Sun you want your model to be scaled by. You can fill in either the red bordered inches box or the green bordered millimeters box. Important: Only fill in one box. If both are filled in you will get a dialog box asking you to clear one of the boxes. Use the Clear button to clear the entire form.
  • Click on the "Calculate" button.
  • Notice that the distances and sizes of the planets will automatically fill in. I've also provided some other interesting scale comparisons at the bottom of the chart.
  • You can now build your scale model. You can do this with a long tape measure, or you can measure the size of your pace and walk it off counting the number of steps you take. To mark a planet's place you can use a piece of paper on a post that you stick into the ground, or you can use a flag, or even a person. Be prepared for a long walk!
  • If you build your solar system on a roll of toilet paper, you can make the Sun about .4 inches (10 mm) across and still fit the entire solar system on the roll. A standard roll of toilet paper has about 450 sheets that are about 4.375 inches long, hence the roll is about 164 feet long. You should check your toilet paper for length. Some are longer.

Telescopetown.com Newsflash! Comets Coming! Though just recently discovered, the comets named “Neat” and “Linear” should be an exciting site in the sky from the last days of April through May 2004. During this time, the pair will be traveling closest to the earth. Not only is it interesting to have two comets fly by at the same time, but also the fact that they are scheduled to intersect at a point. The comet Neat will be moving on a northward trajectory with Linear moving from west to east. These perpendicular paths that the comets will be on for a few days should form a cross type figure if their tails are bright enough. The northern hemisphere will not have the same view as the south because Linear will not be visible. It will be hard to judge what the brightness of the comets will be, but they should be viewable with the naked eye because of how close to the Earth they will be traveling.

Welcome to Solar System Live, the interactive Orrery of the Web. You can view the entire Solar System , or just the inner planets (through the orbit of Mars). Controls allow you to set time and date, viewpoint, observing location, orbital elements to track an asteroid or comet, and a variety of other parameters. Click on the title of any control to display a help page explaining it, or go directly to the help table of contents . You can compose a request with custom settings and save the results in your browser's hotlist or bookmark table, allowing direct access to Solar System Live with all the controls preset to your own preferences. To use Solar System Live, you need a graphical Web browser with forms support and the ability to display GIF images. Windows users can create orrery displays like this in real time, on their own machines, as well as view the Earth, sky, stars at the horizon, track Earth satellites, and more with Home Planet , my public domain Earth/Space/Sky simulator available for downloading from this site. An Overview of the Solar System
Orbits
The solar system consists of the Sun ; the nine planets, more than 130 satellites of the planets, a large number of small bodies (the comets and asteroids), and the interplanetary medium. (There are probably also many more planetary satellites that have not yet been discovered.) The inner solar system contains the Sun Mercury Venus Earth and Mars The main asteroid belt (not shown) lies between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. The planets of the outer solar system are Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune and Pluto The first thing to notice is that the solar system is mostly empty space. The planets are very small compared to the space between them. Even the dots on the diagrams above are too big to be in proper scale with respect to the sizes of the orbits. The orbits of the planets are ellipses with the Sun at one focus, though all except Mercury and Pluto are very nearly circular. The orbits of the planets are all more or less in the same plane (called the ecliptic and defined by the plane of the Earth's orbit) . The ecliptic is inclined only 7 degrees from the plane of the Sun's equator. Pluto's orbit deviates the most from the plane of the ecliptic with an inclination of 17 degrees. The above diagrams show the relative sizes of the orbits of the nine planets from a perspective somewhat above the ecliptic (hence their non-circular appearance). They all orbit in the same direction (counter-clockwise looking down from above the Sun's north pole); all but Venus, Uranus and Pluto also rotate in that same sense.
