Energy can be extracted from the wind by transferring the momentum of passing air to rotor blades.
Wind power is now competitive, on price, with many conventional energy technologies. Energy is concentrated into a single rotating shaft. The power of the shaft can be used in many ways: for example, large modern turbines convert it into electricity. Wind - a form of solar energy - is a low-density source of power. The quantity of energy developed is the product of the density of the air and the cube of the wind speed.

EuroSun2004: Top solar researchers meet in Freiburg, Germany They cool buildings with hot air from solar collectors. They generate electricity from silicon films that are thinner than a hair. They invent novel materials to store solar energy more efficiently. Solar researchers develop new products and procedures in their laboratories, test them in demonstration systems and co-operate with industry to make them ready for practical application. From the 20th to 23rd June, 2004, scientists and engineers from all over the world will present their most recent research results in more than 400 lectures and posters at the EuroSun2004 conference in Freiburg, Germany. The conference organisers especially aim to offer young researchers the opportunity to communicate the results of their work. "In addition to recognised experts, we are also expecting many young scientists from universities and research institutes", said Dr Volker Wittwer, Scientific President of EuroSun2004. A workshop on new types of concentrators and micro-structured optical surfaces for solar energy systems is directed specifically to recent graduates. Other workshops deal with optimised selection of materials for solar collectors and thermal storage units, and current developments in solar-thermal power station technology.

Photovoltaics: Solar Electricity and Solar Cells in Theory and Practice
The word Photovoltaic is a combination of the Greek word for Light and the name of the physicist Allesandro Volta. It identifies the direct conversion of sunlight into energy by means of solar cells. The conversion process is based on the photoelectric effect discovered by Alexander Bequerel in 1839. The photoelectric effect describes the release of positive and negative charge carriers in a solid state when light strikes its surface. How Does a Solar Cell Work?

How Does a Solar Cell Work?
Solar cells are composed of various semiconducting materials. Semiconductors are materials, which become electrically conductive when supplied with light or heat, but which operate as insulators at low temperatures.
Over 95% of all the solar cells produced worldwide are composed of the semiconductor material Silicon (Si). As the second most abundant element in earth`s crust, silicon has the advantage, of being available in sufficient quantities, and additionally processing the material does not burden the environment. To produce a solar cell, the semiconductor is contaminated or "doped". "Doping" is the intentional introduction of chemical elements, with which one can obtain a surplus of either positive charge carriers (p-conducting semiconductor layer) or negative charge carriers (n-conducting semiconductor layer) from the semiconductor material. If two differently contaminated semiconductor layers are combined, then a so-called p-n-junction results on the boundary of the layers.

Battery systems that offer higher energy density became the subject of joint research by federal and auto industry scientists. Solar cars were first built by universities and manufacturers. The sun energy collector areas proved to be too large for consumer cars, however that is changing. Development continues on solar cell design and car power supply requirements such as heater or air-conditioning fans. Useful references related to building solar cars.

About Photovoltaics
Photovoltaic (or PV) systems convert light energy into electricity.
Most commonly known as "solar cells," PV systems are already an important part of our lives. The simplest systems power many of the small calculators and wrist watches we use every day. More complicated systems provide electricity for pumping water, powering communications equipment, and even lighting our homes and running our appliances. In a surprising number of cases, PV power is the cheapest form of electricity for performing these tasks. Links Montana Residential Solar Electric Demonstration Project

Bulk electrical power generation using the available solar energy of a kilowatt per square meter will occur when photovoltaic cells decline in price below 10 cents per kilowatt-hour. The first practical solar cell was developed at Bell Laboratories [1] in 1954. With the advent of the space program, photovoltaic cells made from semiconductor-grade silicon quickly became the power source of choice for use on satellites. The system were very reliable, and cost was of little concern. In the early 1970s, the disruption of oil supplies to the industrialized world led to serious consideration of photovoltaics as a terrestrial power source. This application focused research attention on improving performance, lowering costs and increasing reliability. These three issues remain important today even though researchers have made extraordinary progress over the years. This article details that progress.

Solar Energy Energy from the Sun
The sun has produced energy for billions of years. Solar energy is the solar radiation that reaches the earth. Solar energy can be converted directly or indirectly into other forms of energy, such as heat and electricity. The major drawbacks (problems, or issues to overcome) of solar energy are: (1) the intermittent and variable manner in which it arrives at the earth's surface and, (2) the large area required to collect it at a useful rate. Solar energy is used for heating water for domestic use, space heating of buildings, drying agricultural products, and generating electrical energy. In the 1830s, the British astronomer John Herschel used a solar collector box to cook food during an expedition to Africa. Now, people are trying to use the sun's energy for lots of things. Electric utilities are are trying photovoltaics, a process by which solar energy is converted directly to electricity. Electricity can be produced directly from solar energy using photovoltaic devices or indirectly from steam generators using solar thermal collectors to heat a working fluid. There were 15 solar electric generating units operating in the US at the end of 2002, with more on the way. Most of these are in California, though Nevada, Arizona, Texas, and Virginia have them, too.

Explor e Play and learn Network Surf Go back S olar energy India receives solar energy equivalent to over 5000 trillion kWh/year, which is far more than the total energy consumption of the country. S olar energy is the most readily available source of energy. It does not belong to anybody and is, therefore, free. It is also the most important of the non-conventional sources of energy because it is non-polluting and, therefore, helps in lessening the greenhouse effect. Solar energy has been used since prehistoric times, but in a most primitive manner. Before 1970, some research and development was carried out in a few countries to exploit solar energy more efficiently, but most of this work remained mainly academic. After the dramatic rise in oil prices in the 1970s, several countries began to formulate extensive research and development programmes to exploit solar energy. When we hang out our clothes to dry in the sun, we use the energy of the sun. In the same way, solar panels absorb the energy of the sun to provide heat for cooking and for heating water. Such systems are available in the market and are being used in homes and factories. India is one of the few countries with long days and plenty of sunshine, especially in the Thar desert region. This zone, having abundant solar energy available, is suitable for harnessing solar energy for a number of applications. In areas with similar intensity of solar radiation, solar energy could be easily harnessed. Solar thermal energy is being used in India for heating water for both industrial and domestic purposes. A 140 MW integrated solar power plant is to be set up in Jodhpur but the initial expense incurred is still very high.

RE Partnership for Promotion LOW COST photovoltaic energy Background The current energy situation in Europe and in Italy reflects the growing dependence of the continent on oil and natural gas, with the resulting well-known environmental impacts, such as global warming, deteriorating air quality in medium/ large cities and the ever more frequent environmental disasters caused by oil tankers, etc. The results of recent attempts in Italy to create a reasonable market for solar photovoltaic technology have been disappointing, with only a slightly increase in the rate at which solar photovoltaic (SPV) panels and components (supplied by manufacturers in East Asia) have been installed. In Italy, the production of SPV panels has dropped by 20% in the past three years. The State aid granted both by the Central Administration and the European Commission in the form of support programmes has been distributed, in some cases, in a non-discriminatory way, and there has been no explicit focus on reducing the cost of manufacturing panels, although this is probably the most urgently needed measure. This is precisely the field of action of AISEF, a non-profit Italian association for the development of photovoltaic energy created in March 2003 with the aim of starting up a “virtuous cycle” of production and sale of SPV panels and plants at attractive prices through the creation of a leasing company. The most important part of the loan will be provided by voluntary funds with the stimulus of an effective advertising campaign. This fund will enhance research and development projects to obtain a more efficient production and therefore cheaper SPV cells and panels.

Abstract
Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems have shown their potential in rural electrification projects around the world, especially concerning Solar Home Systems. With continuing price decreases of PV systems, other applications are becoming economically attractive and growing experience is gained with the use of PV in such areas as social and communal services, agriculture and other productive activities, which can have a significant impact on rural development. There is still a lack of information, however, on the potential and limitations of such PV applications. The main aim of this study is, therefore, to contribute to a better understanding of the potential impact and of the limitations of PV systems on sustainable agriculture and rural development (SARD), especially concerning income-generating activities. It is, in fact, of paramount importance to identify the potential contribution of PV to rural development in order to gain further financial and political commitment for PV projects and programmes and to design appropriate PV projects. One of the main lessons learnt through this study is that success of PV programmes is significantly enhanced when an integrated strategy is followed. Solar photovoltaic systems, through their flexibility in use, offer unique chances for the energy sector to provide "packages" of energy services to remote rural areas such as for rural health care, education, communication, agriculture, lighting and water supply. It is hoped that this document contributes to the generation of ideas and discussions among the different institutions involved in providing these services to rural areas and thereby to an "informed" decision on the PV technology option.
