NSCP Project # SCT00015
Date Published: 1993 By Mike Langman, Provincial Advisor Land Use Planning,
Plant Industry Branch, NSDAM Abstract The Canada/Nova Scotia Agreement on Soil Conservation identified soil resource education and demonstration activities as important components of a complete Provincial soil conservation program. A Soil Conservation Specialist was contracted to develop and deliver a soil education program. At the end of year one of this two year program, the Specialist has inventoried soil degradation problems in the Province, developed education and demonstration materials, and has worked cooperatively with producer groups to resolve specific soil problems associated with the production of certain crops. In year two, the programs will be continued. INTRODUCTION This project is a two-year demonstration and education strategy designed to increase farmers understanding of soil degradation and to demonstrate land management for soil conservation in selected areas of the province. The objective of this project is to introduce, promote and demonstrate soil resource management practices on agricultural land in Nova Scotia.

environment CARE projects train farmers to effectively manage soil fertility and productivity over the long-term, both on their individual plots and on lands surrounding communities. CARE soil management activities use primarily locally available organic nutrients, such as ground covers, livestock manure, and household waste, and nitrogen-fixing trees and shrubs. Soil management activities also focus on reducing soil erosion as well as gully and landslide control through, for example, terracing, vegetative cover, and strategically planted trees. In 2000, CARE has 40 projects that stress soil conservation. CARE's Sustainable Land Use Management Project works with 9,000 farm families in the Ecuadorian Andes to improve their agricultural production and protect their natural resources through better land use practices. Through the project, CARE provides training in: improved agricultural methods such as crop rotation and soil fertility tests; pasture care for livestock; soil conservation through terracing and the use of trees and shrubs; integrated pest management; water and watershed management; and environmental education to participating families. State Soils Policy Soils: Our Precious Resource Soils are essential to terrestrial life on this planet. We depend on soils to produce food, fibres and building materials. Soils in good condition will grow healthy plants, maintain or improve the quality of water, reduce the effects of floods and help remove pollution and waste from the environment. Australian soils generally have properties that make their management somewhat difficult. They are often characterised by low fertility, with most plant nutrients occurring in the surface zone. Except for those soils that have native leguminous vegetation, nitrogen levels can be critically low. Many Australian soils have physical problems. They can be hardsetting and are often characterised by fine-textured, tough subsoils with restricted waterholding capacity. Some subsoils never wet up properly and others can have high mechanical impedance or poor aeration and often high salinity resulting in poorly developed root systems. Nor is the Australian climate conducive to production and retention of high levels of organic matter; organic matter is generally very low. It is important that we value and conserve our soils so they will continue to be useful in the future.
