What is the schedule for the new computer-based exam?
The launch date for the new exam is April 5, 2004. The exam will be offered up to six days a week, during two out of every three months. According to the latest information, a candidate can sit for one or more parts of the exam during a test period but may not take a specific part of the exam more than once during that same test period. Each State Board can establish its own policy on the time frame in which a candidate must pass all four parts of the exam. The AICPA has recommended that the period be 18 months.

(20 minutes, All ages) HOW TO READ MUSIC covers the basics of reading and understanding music. Colorful animations and graphics make learning to read music simple, easy, and fun. Clear and logical presentations build a solid foundation of musical knowledge for all age groups. LESSON ONE defines and explains the staff and how it is used. The treble and bass staffs are introduced, and their respective clefs are illustrated. LESSON TWO illustrates and explains the concept of pitch, and shows how the staff is used to organize pitch. The musical scale is explained. Octaves, sharps, and flats are defined. A unique audio visual flash card system helps teach the viewer to recognize and name a pitch on the staff. LESSON THREE explains the part played by rhythm (time) in music. Clear, animated graphic examples show how the beat regulates music. The importance of keeping proper time is explained. LESSON FOUR describes and explains musical notes. Whole, half, quarter, and eighth notes are defined, and their relationships to time are explained and illustrated. Clear, animated graphics bring together all of the information presented in the video to show "HOW TO READ MUSIC."

Nurturing the Naturalist
By Jinny Gudmundsen
Published on March 2nd, 2001 "Nature software" may seem like an oxymoron. However, children can learn a lot about nature from the comfort of their computer chairs. The computer allows children to get up-close and personal with animals they would not otherwise be able to see. It enables children to learn about habitats that are far away from where they live. With a computer, children can even create their own ecosystem and experiment with how interrelationships work. Here's a closer look at three software titles that offer children fun ways to learn about nature.
Choosing Children's Software
Zoboomafoo: Animal Kids
Seven of these activities explore worthwhile exploits like following directions to find fruit, playing memory and logic games, matching baby animals with their parents, and participating in creative art and craft activities. The other four activities are pure arcade. Unfortunately, Zoboomafoo suffers from a rigid interface that presents the 11 games at specific intervals and does not allow the child control over the play. It is also difficult to switch between the three difficulty levels offered in these activities.

Child Safety and the Internet

The internet is an invaluable teaching tool. However, if you are concerned about your child accessing inappropriate content on the internet, check out the following links to articles on the subject and to companies that provide internet blocking or filtering software. I do not endorse, nor discourage, the use of the products described. Ultimately, it is your decision as a parent whether to use such software, or other means of limiting your child's access to the internet.

My recommendations:
  • Kidspiration : This wonderful visual organizing program can help primary students use pictures and key words to organize their ideas and eventually create written work. Hundreds of pictures and symbols are available for students to express their ideas. The program allows for individual creativity or uniform projects for the whole class. The spoken pictures and directions make using this program easy for even the youngest students. I highly recommend this piece of software for all K-3 classrooms. (If you teach older students, try Inspiration!) Download a demo of either program at: http://www.inspiration.com HotDog Junior : This web editing program for children makes designing web pages a snap with a drag-and-drop interface and cute pre-designed templates. Kids can start from scratch or just change the details of a pre-made web page to make it their own. The program also encourages internet safety and helps with uploading or exporting html files. For teachers looking for an easy way to get their students started on the web, this would be ideal. Download a demo of this program or the adult version (HotDog PageWiz) at: http://www.sausage.com
