Software For Learning
For several years, the Maricopa Center for Learning and Instruction (MCLI) has conducted software evaluations for the Maricopa Community Colleges . Critical is the identification of the software's effectiveness as a tool for learning. All reviews were completed by faculty members. Topic Date Description Counseling Sept 1996 Counselors reviewed several titles in the areas of personal development and decision making, for potential use as a classroom tool and as a tool in a counseling-client setting. Games and Simulations Oct 1995 Shall we teach with a game? was the question we asked faculty in several disciplines. They looked at the games in how useful they might be as an instructional tool and each provided a learning activity that could use the software. Humanities Jan 1995 LynnAnn Wojciechowicz of South Mountain Community College reviewed 23 Humanities software programs, most of which are available on CD-ROM. Mathematics Aug 1994 Math software was last reviewed by us in 1987, and a new round was completed in the summer of 1994. Some of the reviewers took on the extra option to create lesson materials for the program under consideration. NOTE: These reviews have been removed since they are several years out of date.

Dollarville's a charmer! Aimed at young cowboys and cowgirls ages 5 through 9, this multi-level educational CD-ROM scores big stars for quality, educational content. With over 1,000 randomly generated questions, it also rates high in my book for replayability. When it comes to teaching kids practical sense in how to easily identify coins, this software is unique. Excellent animation and sharp, clear images help kindergarteners recognize coins by sizes, colors, edges and by their pictures. There are entertaining matching and counting games, as well.

    Introduction
Drew University[ ] is a small private college in Madison, New Jersey, USA. Our joint Mathematics/Computer Science Department[ ] offers a Computer Science major developed along guidelines published by the Association for Computing Machinery[ ]. Being a small department, and stemming originally from a mathematics-only department, our curriculum places heavy emphasis on programming and the design of programs and algorithms. Our curriculum is fully integrated with the University's commitment to the liberal arts. (As I understand it, the notion of a "liberal arts" education is unique to colleges and universities in the United States. For a slightly overstated description of the liberal arts philosophy, see the Liberal Arts Colleges Web site[ The Drew campus has several computing luxuries not afforded to other small institutions. Since 1984 each entering first-year student has received a desktop computer (or notebook computer) and printer. In 1984 the standard issue was a desktop computer with a Z-80 chip running CP/M[

By Si Dunn and Connie Dunn Imagine you are an observer in an elementary-school classroom. Two shiny new computers are hooked up to the school's network and the Internet. The teacher steps to the front of her room, smiles at 35 young faces and poses a challenge: "OK, class, we have downloaded a wonderful picture of penguins from the Web. Who can tell me how to insert this picture into a report written in Microsoft Word?" She is not conducting a test. The 10-year-olds are teaching her how to use the software. This is how many public-school teachers are learning computer technology or improving their software knowledge: their students are passing along skills and shortcuts learned on their own, from their parents or other kids. For many teachers, formal computer training often is not readily available or affordable in their school districts. And many low-paid teachers cannot afford good home computers and Internet accounts that would let them gain experience and confidence from daily use.

Al haTorah, v'al ha-avodah, v'al g'milut chasadim.
The world depends on three things:
on Torah, on worship and on loving deeds.
Pirkei Avot
V'shinantam is divided into three sections. Torah contains thoughts and ideas for us as teachers to help support and elevate us in our holy work. Avodah will be teaching ideas and suggestions to use in our classrooms. G'milut Chasadim contains information about a specific mitzvah and suggests opportunities to involve our students and us in the work of helping others, in and out of the classroom. Each teacher has varying comfort with different subject matter as well as different teaching tools. A challenge for many teachers is how to integrate technology into the classroom. Today the term "technology" often means computers and the Internet. Ten years ago, "technology" may have meant a bulky video camera or a VHS or BetaMax videotape recorder. In looking at the use of technology in the classroom, an educational technologist uses the broadest definition of technology. Technology is any instrument or tool that can be used to assist a person in teaching a lesson. Technology can be anything from a pencil and a piece of paper to the electronic superhighway. How do you decide which technologies to use in the classroom?

Choosing School Software
by Tammy Payton This article has appeared on the following website: the Well Connected Educator Articles and Interviews
Congratulations! Your school has earmarked money for software, and now you're wondering where to begin! How do you discover the software that will best fit your needs? What kind of software program should you use? What kinds of computer programs are available? What are management systems, and do you need to purchase one? These were questions that we asked ourselves when our school had a major technological renovation in 1994. After serving on the software adoption committee, I began developing questions that helped us evaluate software. This article is a product of our discoveries.
Software Comes First
Ideally, choose your software before committing yourself to what hardware and platforms you'll be using. By choosing the software before you purchase your computers, you can be sure that the programs will run efficiently. Schools often purchase their operating systems and network software before they've chosen the software. This limits your choices. All software that you purchase has specific system requirements in order for it to run properly. If you've already purchased your hardware, then you need to narrow your software choices to those that will operate on the system and the system's capabilities that you have. If you have a networked system, be sure to see if the software you are looking at has a networked version.
