Software engineering (SE) is the profession concerned with creating and maintaining software applications by applying computer science (CS), project management (PM), domain knowledge (DK), and other skills and technologies. Software applications (including ATMs compilers databases email ... video games , and the world wide web ) embody social and economic value , by making people more productive, improving their quality of life, and enabling them to do things that would otherwise be impossible. SE technologies and practices (including databases languages libraries patterns ... standards , and tools ) help developers, by improving productivity and quality Software engineering is a community of people. The SE community includes 630,000 practitioners and educators in the U.S. and 1,400,000(?) practitioners in the E.U. Asia , and elsewhere; and is about 60% the size of traditional engineering. American SE pioneers include Kent Beck Barry Boehm Fred Brooks Watts Humphrey , and David Parnas There is considerable debate over whether software development should be considered a branch of traditional engineering , a branch of computer science , an independent scientific field, or a non-scientific craft. This article attempts to be neutral on this issue, but errs on the side of being independent to clarify the differences between fields.

Overview
The missions of the Software Engineering Laboratory, also called LGL from its French denomination , are teaching and research in software engineering. Our current activities are targeted at system and software development methods and supporting tools. Our work is based on the object-oriented paradigm and covers the complete range of technical software development activities: requirements analysis, software specification, architecture modeling, design, implementation and testing. It is our goal to bridge the gap between the descriptive (or semi-formal) approaches and formal methods, and to extend them for dealing with distributed systems. We try to maintain an index of our web pages, and a list of our members . But perhaps you need contact information , or you want to visit us and you are trying to locate us . Maybe, you just wanted to check out our many publications

Software Engineering for Internet Applications (6.171)
part of Teaching by Philip Greenspun This is a course for students who already have some programming and software engineering experience, e.g., at MIT the prerequisite is 6.170, Laboratory in Software Engineering. In 6.171 we try to give students some experience in dealing with those challenges that are unique to Internet applications:
    • concurrency 1000 people might be using the system at the same time
    • unpredictable load 100,000 users might show up tomorrow even if only 100 are using the system today
    • security risks an Internet application is forced to expose itself to attacks
    • opportunity for wide-area distributed computing, i.e., using "Web services" provided by other machines on the Internet
    • creating a reliable and stateful user experience on top of unreliable connections and stateless protocols
    • extreme requirements and absurd development schedules
    • requirements that change mid-way through a project, sometimes because of experience gained from testing with users
    • user demands for a multi-modal interface: Web, mobile (WAP), and voice

    Experimental Software Engineering Group
The Experimental Software Engineering Group (ESEG) of the University of Maryland views the study of software engineering as a laboratory science . Specific research projects are centered around formalizing various aspects of (a) the Quality Improvement Paradigm ( QIP ), (b) the Experience Factory ( EF ), and (c) the Goal/Question/Metric approach ( GQM ). The QIP is aimed at building descriptive models of software processes, products, and other forms of experience, experimenting with and analyzing these models, in order to build improvement-oriented, packaged, prescriptive models. The EF is an organizational approach for packaging reusable software experiences and supplying them to projects and building core competencies in software.

    • Tigris.org is a mid-sized open source community focused on building better tools for collaborative software development.
    • You will not find thousands of unrelated projects here: every project fits into the Tigris mission.
    • You will not find dead projects here: every project is welcomed into the community with a commitment to see it through and active developers cycle among related projects.
    • Tigris.org is hosted by CollabNet, but the Tigris mission is one for the entire open source movement and one that has attracted senior open source developers from many organizations.
The Tigris Mission: Promoting Open Source Software Engineering
Tigris.org provides information resources for software engineering professionals and students, and a home for open source software engineering tool projects. We also promote software engineering education and host some undergraduate senior projects.
