Athletes play slow pitch softball, which involves two teams of 10 athletes each. Athletes of lower ability can compete in tee-ball or individual skills contests with events that emphasize the basics of the game, such as base running. As in all Special Olympics sports, athletes are grouped in competition divisions according to their ability level, age and gender. At the 1999 World Games, 366 athletes from nine countries competed in this event. The American Softball Association has welcomed Special Olympics softball athletes and coaches. Both ASA and Special Olympics share the goal to expand softball worldwide. The ASA includes Special Olympics coaches in their clinics, as well as conducting Special Olympic sessions as a part of their coaches education. Softball is a fall sport for Special Olympics Texas with statewide competition at the Fall Classic in October. The following events are sanctioned by Special Olympics Texas and are to be offered at all local, area and chapter competitions. The actual events scheduled and conducted at local, area and chapter competitions will be determined by a minimum number of entries in each event.

AIS Program Highlights... 2000 Olympic Year
    • The Australian Softball Team added another bronze medal to their Olympic Medal Tally at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. The entire Softball Team were AIS Scholarship holders in 2000. One of the highlights of the Olympics was once again scoring a win against the USA Team, however the win didn’t come at the right time for the Australian team as the results below will show.
    • The Australian Team defeated the USA in Game 18, with an inspirational performance from Peta Edebone who hit a 2 run home run to win the game 2-1. However, Australia faced Japan in the Major Semi Final and the team was unable to score a run, which put them into the Preliminary final against the USA. The winner of this game would advance into the Gold Medal Game with the loser winning the Bronze Medal. Unfortunately, Australia could not score off the USA’s power pitchers and finished the Olympic Games tournament with the Bronze Medal. Results: Australia v New Zealand 3-2 Australia v Italy 7-0 Australia v Canada 1-0 Australia v Japan 0-1 Australia v USA 2-1 Major Semi-Final Australia v Japan 0-1 Preliminary Final Australia v USA 0-1 Australia Winning Bronze Medal Gold Medal Game USA v Japan 2-1 Australia won the Canada Cup defeating Atlanta Olympic Silver Medalists-China in the Final 7-0. The Australian players were rewarded for their fantastic performances as follows:

By ANTONYA ENGLISH, Times Staff Writer published February 8, 2002 2001 RECORD: 37-28, 14-15 SEC. COACH: Karen Johns (37-28, second season). KEY RETURNING PLAYERS: Jr. 3B Jennifer Mossadeghi (.317, team-high 34 runs, top returning batter); So. SS Jenilee Garner (.316, 18 runs, 44 starts at four positions); Jr. C Bree Berger (.289, started every game, including 26 at catcher and 37 at designated player; threw out 19 of 27 batters). KEY NEWCOMERS: 1B Ashley Cutcliff (Zionsville, Ind.); 2B/SS Mandy Schuerman (Riverview East Bay); C Ashlie Goble (Pine, Col., Mullen); P Amanda Knowles (Fort Lauderdale Aquinas). THE LOWDOWN: Florida opens the season today with the GRU Classic, which includes South Florida, Florida International and North Carolina. The Gators return nine starters and are deepest in the outfield, where nine players are vying for three spots. Although the Gators lost three starters at pitcher, catcher and first base, Johns believes she has the players to step up and fill those roles. The best part about this team, Johns believes, is its versatility. Several players proved during the fall season that they can be useful in many roles.

With sponsors including Incline Station, On The Limit and Cellular One, the co-recreation program participated in league play, as well as the annual Copasetic Tournament. The team took first place in their division. Special Olympics Duluth is proud to mention that five athletes from Duluth were selected to participate on the 1995 Minnesota Softball Team at the World Games.
