When softball made its Olympic debut in Atlanta in 1996, the tournament’s fastest pitch was clocked at 118 kilometres per hour. This white missile was propelled at a batter standing just 12.2 metres away, leaving a reaction time registered in the tenths of a second. Such pitches are not out of the ordinary, with most world-class pitchers averaging speeds of 105-115kph. It’s a sport in which Australia has enjoyed considerable success, from winning the first world championships in 1965 to taking the bronze medal in Atlanta. Softball has had a far lower profile than its cousin, baseball. But because of the shorter pitching distance (baseball pitchers stand 18.4 metres from home plate) and the shorter distances between bases, softball is generally a faster game.

Baseball, softball While Hyde Park looks set to stage the triathlon at a London 2012 Olympics, its central London neighbour will also see some action.
It was thought The Oval might host the baseball but that event, and softball, will be staged in north London if the bid is successful. Home to London Zoo and close to the hotels and tourist attractions of the West End, it could be turned into a temporary venue with relatively little trouble.

Britain won two modern pentathlon medals at the 2000 Games The International Olympic Committee has announced that no sports will be dropped for the 2008 Games in Beijing.
Baseball, softball and modern pentathlon were in jeopardy but they have been given more time to try to preserve their Olympic status. Their future will now be decided at a meeting in July 2005, when the IOC will meet to decide on the programme for the 2012 Games. The last sport dropped from the summer Olympics was polo in 1936. Baseball, softball and modern pentathlon had been recommended for exclusion by an IOC panel in 2002. And the IOC's announcement came as a big relief to the sports' ruling bodies. "I wish they had done this two years ago," said International Softball Federation president Don Porter.

The U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista is the first USOC training facility to be master-planned from the ground up and is dedicated to the development of America's future Olympic and Paralympic athletes. The year-round, warm-weather facility in Chula Vista, California, was a gift to the United States Olympic Committee from the San Diego National Sports Training Foundation, a group of dedicated business and community leaders, and volunteers who raised the funds to build the Center.

Through programs developed by the national governing bodies of each sport, and estimated 4,000 athletes each year will receive the coaching, support and facilities necessary to be their best. These numbers are increasing each year.
The Center, which officially opened in June 1995, not only benefits thousands of Olympic hopefuls, but serves local youth and citizens nationwide. The Training Center has been designed to accommodate thousands of daily visitors with escorted tours of our nation's state-of-the-art national Training Center at no charge.

A NOTE ON SOFTBALL 1N THE 2008 OLYMPICS
As you may or may not be aware, the 2008 games will be held in China.
Softball is one of three Olympic sports currently being considered to be dropped from that competition (also baseball) to make room for golf, 7-a-side Rugby (the new IOC Chairman played rugby in college) and Wushu (a form of Chinese martial arts).
If you think softball ought to be kept in the Olympics, then get word to the IOC. See below for an article on softball and how to respond.

The ISF urges all softball lovers to respond:
SOFTBALL SUPPORTERS URGED TO SPEAK OUT TO IOC
The International Softball Federation (ISF) issued a response to the recommendation to eliminate softball, along with two other sports, from the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. The recommendation came from the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Program Commission.
Part of the call to action in the ISF's comments is a worldwide campaign by softball supporters to voice their displeasure of this recommendation and their support of the game, especially at the Olympic level, to the IOC.

Keeping softball in play
Advocates say maintaining Olympic status is key to continued development of sport at college level
BY HEATHER YOST
STAFF WRITER
USA Softball has been on a white-knuckle ride since its sport was introduced into the Olympics in 1996. The first nail biter came when Dot Richardson hit a medal-clinching home run against China in the sport's inaugural Olympic games in Atlanta. The next thriller came in Sydney in 2000 when the defending gold-medal team lost three of its first-round games and almost didn't even advance to the medal round. Stacey Nuveman's three-run homer in the 10th inning in the semifinals saved the day and sent the United States to the gold-medal game. The most recent scare, though, was not scheduled on the Olympic calendar. The International Olympic Committee (IOC), on a recommendation by its program commission, opened discussions to eliminate softball, baseball and modern pentathlon, beginning with the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing. The IOC's reason for possibly eliminating sports from the Games (for the first time since polo was dropped in 1936) was said to be in the interest of making the Games smaller and less costly.
