Softball is an exciting game played by men and women of all ages all around the world. It was invented at the end of the 19th century as an indoor game and has become very popular among a number of countries, including the United States, Australia, Japan and China to name a few. Description Softball is played by two teams, nine players per team on the field, alternating turns at bat and defense. The aim of the team in offense is to hit the ball with the bat and, by consecutively reaching all three bases to return to the home plate and earn a run. The team in defense on the other hand pitches the ball to the team in offense and tries to prevent the other team from gaining points. Knowledge Is Good
Contact me: kuff - at - offthekuff.com Main November 30, 2002 Baseball still an Olympic sport A decision on whether or not to drop baseball, softball, and the modern pentathlon from Olympic competition has been postponed until after the 2004 Games, thus ensuring that all three sports will continue through at least 2008. This is a good thing.
After 10-minute presentations to the assembly by leaders of the three endangered sports, dozens of rank-and-file IOC members took the floor to question the whole process and push for a postponement. Of the 39 speakers, not a single one spoke in favor of the proposals to cut the sports. ''It is urgent to wait,'' Senegalese member Youssoupha Ndiaye said in a statement that summed up much of the 2½-hour debate. [IOC President Jacques Rogge, who pushed the reduction,] then conferred with his executive board and submitted a proposal to put off any deletion of sports until after Athens. Of the 117 attending members, only two raised their hands against the postponement, while four abstained. On a separate motion, the members approved the ''general principles'' of the IOC's review of the sports program. The last sport dropped from the Summer Olympics was polo in 1936, and IOC members made clear they had no desire for radical change now.

Women have made many advancements in the Olympic games over the past 100 years and it appears that the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia will benefit them more than ever before. Two new sports have been added to the games, increasing the total number of sports to twenty-eight. In addition, Sydney will incorporate more than twenty new women's events into its program. This is twenty more than were seen in the Atlanta games in 1996. For the first time in Olympic competition, the Modern Pentathlon, Water Polo, and Weightlifting will include events for women. Athletic, Aquatic, and Shooting sports are also adding more women's events. Two sports being added to the Olympic agenda are the Triathlon and Mia Hamm (white jersey) battles for the ball during the U.S. women's 2-0 victory over Norway. (USA Today)

Olympic sports safe ... for now
The International Olympic Committee has decided softball, modern pentathlon and baseball are safe as Olympic sports until 2012. The IOC said no sports would be excluded from the Games for the next eight years. The trio of sports faced expulsion at a 2002 IOC meeting in Mexico, but were given a reprieve when members resisted a proposal to drop them all together. At that meeting in Mexico, IOC members voted to postpone any cuts of entire sports until after the 2004 Summer Olympics, following emotional pleas by officials from the three sports. History is also on the side of softball, modern pentathlon and baseball, as the IOC has not removed any sports from its Games program since 1936. IOC president Jacques Rogge said the sports were safe for the time being. "We have frozen the program at 28 sports and at 10,500 athletes," Dr Rogge said. "If any sport wants to come in, one will have to go. But no sport will be excluded before 2012."
