Softball is an exciting game played by men and women of all ages all around the world. It was invented at the end of the 19th century as an indoor game and has become very popular among a number of countries, including the United States, Australia, Japan and China to name a few. Description Softball is played by two teams, nine players per team on the field, alternating turns at bat and defense. The aim of the team in offense is to hit the ball with the bat and, by consecutively reaching all three bases to return to the home plate and earn a run. The team in defense on the other hand pitches the ball to the team in offense and tries to prevent the other team from gaining points. U.S. softball hurler spins no-hitter; Canada's Whitfield wins triathlon
The Associated Press Sunday, September 17, 2000 Sydney, Australia On a day when the U.S. baseball team made its Sydney debut, the Olympic news was captured in a linescore: No hits, a stirring run, and the end of an era. AP Photo
Competitors in the men's triathlon swim past the Sydney Opera House. Simon Whitfield of Canada won the gold medal today in Sydney. The no-hitter belonged to U.S. softball pitcher Lori Harrigan, whose near-perfect game today (Saturday night CDT) led the Americans past Canada, 6-0, as her team opened its defense of the 1996 gold medal. The run came from Canadian Simon Whitfield, who capped a grueling men's triathlon by sprinting to victory in the final 200 meters outside Sydney Opera House. And the end of era was marked by the passing of IOC head Juan Antonio Samaranch's wife, who stood beside him during his 20-year reign atop the Olympic movement. In the first Olympic men's triathlon, Whitfield survived a crash during the bike race, then summoned his energy for a medal-winning burst. Whitfield blew past silver medalist Stephan Vuckovic of Germany for the victory; the bronze went to Jan Rehula of the Czech Republic.

Fresno State struck gold in Atlanta this summer in the first-ever softball competition of the Summer Olympic Games.
To those who knew that Bulldogs out-numbered all other collegiate players on the U.S.A.'s Olympic softball team, it was a moment that clarified just how great the Fresno State softball program has become. After all, Fresno State's softball teams have made 19 straight league playoff appearances since 1978, with nine women's College World Series appearances.
Current Bulldog Laura Berg and alumnae Bulldogs Kim Maher, Julie Smith, and Shelly Stokes were members of the 15-player U.S. squad at the Olympics; alumna Martha Noffsinger-O'Kelley was an alternate. Bulldog head coach Margie Wright was one of two assistant coaches - and the only female coach - for the Olympic champions.
"It's a dream come true. It's as big as it gets," Wright told The Fresno Bee after being named an assistant coach. "It is a great tribute to Fresno State's system that five current and former players were selected to the team."
Three and a half years ago, Margie Wright was one of eight coaches chosen as national team coaches. In her first official role as an Olympic softball assistant coach, Wright directed the U.S.A. National Team in its gold medal performance at the 1995 Pre-Olympic Superball Classic.

Fastpitch softball Fastpitch softball is a game closely resembling baseball, which is played on a similar diamond and with a ball that is larger and softer. The game is played between two teams, with a bat and ball, the two teams taking turns at batting and trying to score runs. The softball rule outlays are similar to that of baseball. Associations such as the ASA (Amateur Softball Association) and NSA (National Softball Association) encourage participation and bring about a form of standardization in softball rule and game. History of softball Fastpitch softball team
There are two types of fastpitch softball teams, Contract Team and Recreation Team. A Contract fastpitch softball team is one that plays at strong competitive levels. In addition to league play, they participate in many tournaments. A Recreation fastpitch softball team on the other hand, is one in which the players are in for the exercise and fun. The Junior Olympic softball workshop be held in February at Oklahoma City is a much awaited event. The effort of the Olympic softball workshop is to thoroughly study the softball rule listings and strategies and create greater awareness of the game.

Michelle Smith set an Olympic record with 21 strikeouts, but she took the loss for the second consecutive game on Wednesday when China scored in the seventh extra inning to win the longest game in Olympic history 2-0.
Japan beat Australia 1-0 earlier in the day to remain the only unbeaten team in the preliminary round of the tournament, raising the stakes in the game between the United States and Australia on Thursday.
The Americans should still make the medal round easily, but a loss to Australia would cost them a potential bye.
"It's not over. The most important part of the tournament has yet to be played," said Fernandez, the starting pitcher against Australia.
"We've got to get into the top four, and then no one's going to remember what anybody's record was. All they're going to remember is who wins the gold, the silver and the bronze."
Smith gave up a single and a walk to lead off the game, then retired the next 26 batters. She sailed into the ninth, getting a scare when Yan Fang hit a long fly ball foul down the right field line.

As a softball player at Salem High, Katie King played for four Class L champions, won all 44 of her pitching decisions, and became the team’s best hitter. Continuing her career at Brown University, she earned Ivy League Player of the Year honors as the Bears’ top pitcher and most productive member of the batting order.
And softball was her second-best sport.
King is better known in the annals of Brown athletics as the school’s all-time women’s ice hockey leader in goals and total points, with 123 and 206 from 1993-97, a period in which she won three Ivy League Player of the Year awards. Nationally, she’s recognized as a star forward on the 1998 gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic team and a probable member of the 2002 squad.
She also is among those receiving honorable mention in the countdown to The Union Leader’s top 10 New Hampshire athletes of the 20th century.

Footie should be
an Olympic sport in 2000
G'DAY, mate. What's a bison? Something to wash your face in. Sorry. I was just brushing up on my Australian. Now that the Centennial Games in Atlanta are over, I'm looking forward to the New Millennium Games in Sydney when it hosts the Olympics in the Year 2000. It also means farewell to the word, "repechage," which can be found in your daily newspaper only once every four years -during the Olympics. Repechage is French for a second chance. Well, I sure hope that there's no repechage for beach volleyball in the next Olympics. It was one of the sports added to the Atlanta Games, along with softball. But unlike softball, which provided a great story, beach volleyball only detracted from real volleyball. It got to the point where some of the media started referring to the latter as indoor volleyball. Give me a break. Knowing the Aussies - and with Sydney home to 30 beaches - it's very likely that beach volleyball might reappear again. I hope not. Instead, I wish the Aussies would opt for rugby, Australian Rules Football or even surfing. And I'm sure that if Greg Norman had any input, golf would be introduced. It's the closest that Greg will ever get to seeing his world tour happen. There was a restaurant ad in the paper the other day saying that "sushi rolling is not an Olympic event ... yet!"

Women in the Olympics - a brief history
The 20th May 2000 marks the 100th anniversary of the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games. It also marks the centenary of women’s participation in the modern Olympics. Three events were available for women at the 1900 Olympic Games: golf, tennis and yachting. When the modern Olympic Games began in 1896 women had no part in the competition. In fact, the founder of the modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin had said on several occasions that the Olympics were no place for women. He felt that rather than seek records for herself, a woman’s greatest achievement was to encourage her sons to excel. Women had to work to gain a presence in the Olympic arena and force open the door to one sport after another. Swimming for women was included in the Games in 1912 and a limited program of track and field was added in 1928. Women’s races longer than 200m were banned until 1960 when the 800m was reintroduced. The women’s marathon was not added until 1984. In 1992 the 10,000m walk was introduced and recently, waterpolo — which had been the domain of men since the Olympics first began — was added to the 2000 Olympic Games program for women. Women have played an enormous role in painting the Olympic picture. Since Charlotte Cooper of Great Britain won gold in singles tennis at the 1900 Paris Olympics, many women have put their stamp on Olympic history.

SUMMER OLYMPICS: U.S. softball strikes gold
Dropped pop-up costs Japan title By STEVE WILSTEIN
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS BLACKTOWN, Australia Laura Berg deserved this moment of luck, this one ball drifting in a gentle arc through a soft, steady rain, up into the lights, just far enough to make trouble for the Japanese left fielder playing shallow on the slick grass. The whole American softball team, so beaten down five days ago that the players resorted to a mock voodoo ritual in the shower to wash away their jinx, deserved this magical moment Tuesday when the ball landed smack in the fielder's glove then squirted free. One fortuitous fly ball on a night when they could manage only one hit, and suddenly the beleaguered US. women were 2-1 victors over Japan, and Olympic champions again.

http://www.oceania-olympic.org/members/fsm.html
Brief History
The Federated States of Micronesia National Olympic Committee (FSMNOC) was formed in 1996 and achieved International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognition on 6 September 1997. The Federated States of Micronesia NOC remains the newest member of the IOC. At the upcoming Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, history will be made with the flag of the Federated States of Micronesia being carried at the opening ceremony for the first time.
In support of its application for IOC membership, the Federated States of Micronesia held the first and second FSM Games and became affiliated to numerous international sport federations. In June 1995, the first FSM Games were held on the island of Pohnpei. Over 900 athletes and coaches from the four FSM island states of Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae competed in twelve sport championships. From 1995 to 1997, seven national sport federations became affiliated with their respective international sport federations. In July 1997, the second FSM Games were held on the island of Kosrae. Over 1,000 athletes and coaches participated in thirteen sport championships over a two-week period. In June 1997, the FSMNOC formally submitted an application for membership in the IOC.
The FSMNOC is the national organization responsible for the coordination and management of FSM athletes and teams participating in the Olympic Games and the South Pacific Games. With funding assistance for Olympic Solidarity and International Federations, it also directs technical assistance to members in sport administration, coaching, training elite athletes and sports medicine. The short-term goal of the NOC is to develop a strong junior sport program throughout the islands. Within ten years, this program will help develop and detect future elite athletes who will represent the FSM in the Olympic Games.
