1996 Summer Olympics
1996 Summer Olympics in the news See also: 1996 Summer Paralympics The Games of the XXVI Olympiad were held in in Atlanta Georgia , United States. Atlanta was selected in above Athens Belgrade Manchester Melbourne and Toronto. Athens had hoped to organise the 100th anniversary of the modern Olympic Games . The IOC 's vote for Atlanta was therefore slightly surprising, however the feeling was that Athens' infrastructure could not be improved enough in time to successfully host the Games. It was regarded by some as one of the least successful of the modern games. The problem of traffic congestion sometimes made travel between venues difficult. There were complaints at how omnipresent the advertising was, with Coca-Cola especially being marketed on every available surface. Also during the games, the Centennial Olympic Park bombing took place on July 27, killing Alice Hawthorne and wounding 111 others, and causing the death of Melih Uzunyol by heart attack. In his closing speech, Juan Antonio Samaranch , head of the IOC, for the first time did not describe the games as being the "best ever".

http://softball.spaceocean.com/history.htm
The origins of Softball can be traced back inside the Farragut Boat Club of Illnois, Chicago, where a Harvard-Yale football game was held, on a winter day in November, 1887. During the post-game celebration, a Yale supporter threw an old boxing glove at a nearby Harvard alumni, who instinctively tried to hit it back with a stick, reportedly a broom handle. This incident prompted George Hancock, a reporter for the Chicago Board of Trade, to suggest a new game of "Indoor Baseball". He scaled down the game of Baseball and drew up a set of rules for it to be played indoor. This new game became popular and moved outdoors...... was broken long ago. Women are no longer a novelty they are a force. Next year in Athens, there could even be more female competitors than men, which would be an Olympic first. Women have never been closer to proving they can compete at a level of strength, stamina and speed once reserved only for men, says Stanford University women's swimming coach Richard Quick, a five-time Olympic coach. When asked to write the article for the first "This month in history", I tried to think where to start. Since the Metro was formed in 1963 to the present, there has been a lot of rich history in the Metro. But, there was also lots of softball history before we became a Metro.
There were the Hammer Field men's teams of the late 30's and 40's. There were the women's Rockets, although not many in ASA, it was still softball. So maybe for this first article it would be fitting to go over the history of softball itself and then in successive months go into early Metro history, then youth softball's beginning, and into the slow pitch history. A lot of the credit for inventing the game of softball was given to George Hancock of the Farragut Boat Club of Chicago, Illinois (USA). The year was 1887 and Hancock was the man who foresaw that the then popular American game of baseball could be brought indoors. The game of indoor baseball, as the new sport was named, became popular and soon went outdoors in the spring. The named changed from indoor baseball to Kitten Ball, then to Mush Ball and finally changed to its present worldwide-adopted name of SOFTBALL.

Dorothy G. Richardson, M.D., Vice Chair , of Clermont, Florida – Dr. Dot Richardson is currently Medical Director of the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida, a state of the art facility for athletes of all levels, located on a campus with a fully staffed hospital (South Lake Hospital) and the University of Central Florida. She is an orthopedic surgeon with Ray-Richardson Orthopedic Associates. In addition to her medical career, Dr. Richardson is a well-known athlete in the sport of softball. A two-time Olympic Gold medallist in softball (1996 and 2000), she hit the game-winning home run that led to a Gold medal in the 1996 Atlanta Games, the year softball debuted at the Olympics. That home run was the first in Olympic softball history. She was the oldest softball player in 1996 and also at the Sydney Games in 2000, when she turned 39. The U.S. team had dominated at the 1996 Games and went to Sydney with a 119-game winning streak. The team struggled to reach the final but triumphed over Japan in a dramatic 2-1 victory to win its second straight Olympic gold medal in softball. Dot Richardson received her B.S. degree in Kinesiology and Pre-Med from the University of California Los Angeles, her Masters in Exercise Physiology/Health from Adelphi University, and her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Louisville Medical School. During her orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Southern California, she took a one-year leave of absence to compete at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. After completing her residency, she began a one-year fellowship at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic, in Los Angeles, where she worked with professional athletes from the Los Angeles Lakers, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.

Never before in the Olympic Games history has a Greek athlete took part in the volleyball, in handball and in other sports less popular in Greece, such as baseball, softball, hockey and badminton. In August 2004 in Athens, Greek athletes will compete in sports most of the Greeks are not familiar with, as well as in sports, like volley ball and handball, Greek athletes are proud of great distinctions. But there are also sports where Greece has never been represented at the Olympics. VOLLEYBALL
The President of Greece's Volley Ball Federation (EOPE) and Hellenic Olympic Committee's (HOC) treasurer Thanassis Beligratis was very clear about the participation of national volleyball teams of men and women in the Athens Olympic Games. "We won't participate in the Games just to parade", he said. "The program of our national
volleyball teams' preparation for the 2004 was set up when our country won the Olympic Games organization. We have been working on that and I hope that our teams will manage to star both in the volleyball and in the beach volleyball". Greece's national men's team won a bronze medal at a European championship, while they took the sixth place, the best they had ever achieved, at the World Championship which took place in Athens in 1994. In the beach volleyball, Greece can be proud of a gold medal at a European championship. It is worth mentioning that volleyball was introduced to the Olympic Games in 1964 in Tokyo, while beach volleyball was introduced to the Olympic Games program in 1996 in Atlanta. Greece has already a participation in two Games.
