Introduction to Sociology: A COMPELing Experience
by Dave Curtis
Coordinator of Instructional Support
Maple Woods Community College
Kansas City, MO
curtis@kcmetro.cc.mo.us
As the Coordinator of Instructional Support for Maple Woods Community College my primary responsibilities are focused on supporting the faculty in the integration of instructional technology into their curriculum's. This can range from teaching them how to use PowerPoint to deliver lecture material to the actual design and development of an interactive multimedia CD-ROM tutorial and everything in between. Years ago, while working on a Ph.D. in Sociology at UC-Riverside, (I finished ABD, another story) I made a living teaching Sociology at several colleges throughout the Los Angeles Basin. Teaching Sociology was all I wanted to do, and yet after 8 years of part-time teaching and several hundred applications to various junior colleges, colleges, and universities it was clear the demand for Sociology instructors was non-existent. So, after a few more years of education at Cal State LA, I earned another MA, this time in Education, specializing in Instructional Design and Media Technology. That degree, plus several jobs and many bizarre paths, brought me to my current position. In the Fall of 1994, the day after classes started here at Maple Woods, the Sociology instructor quit, he got a full-time gig in another part of the country. One days notice for leaving a job is not normally looked upon with great favor, but most people understood that a full-time position in Sociology is about as rare as a left-wing liberal in Missouri (we are rare indeed!). I then get a phone call asking me if I could teach two Introduction to Sociology courses on very short notice.

Student Practicum in Teaching This is a standard contract prepared for those students who are taking a teaching practicum with Dr. Curran as part of Peace and Social Justice Practicum. The Practicum Course, Sociology 596 S, is a graduate course designed specifically to give you practice in teaching sociology. In jeanne's terms that really means in sharing sociology with everyone you can in the interest of creating illocutionary understanding. Though you may not choose the path of formal teaching in a school, we all teach everyday, everywhere we are. We teach our children, we teach our friends, we teach those in our religious groups. The more effectively we teach the process of illocutionary discourse, the closer we come to the skills needed by our communities for governance discourse. Membership in the practicum course with jeanne means that each student takes on some responsibility for locating, having face to face interaction with, and understanding and reaching out to someone. That someone may be friends and classmates here at school, may be your parents, may be co-workers, may be your children, may be local kids playing football in your front yard, may be a Sunday school class. May be any group that falls into your lived reality.

Bush Loves Censorship
I haven't much felt like posting lately, but I just had a big verbal rant while we were watching the West Wing tonight (warning: spoiler ahead), and I thought I'd get it out onto the blog, lest I have an opinion that is not well documented. The West Wing plot line was about a Republican witch hunt over the National Institute of Health's choices of which health-related scientific studies to fund. This may sound familiar to you, as the real Republican party has, in fact, given heightened scrutiny to proposals that have anything to do with sex, especially prostitution or men who have sex with men. As outrageous as this is, it's not the latest crap-ass stuff regarding academic pursuits to come out of the Bush administration.
