Religion in America:
An Introduction to the Sociology of Religion Sociology 300T/580T
Winter 2003 Using the tremendous diversity of religious belief and practice in North America, but particularly new religious movements, this class will acquaint students with the academic study of religion as a social (and sociological) phenomenon. Students will learn how religion has been interpreted by sociologists in the past, and how evolving perspectives shape both the way academics perceive religion and how they study it. They will learn how religion permeates and affects virtually every domain of human culture and interaction. And they will gain experience in fieldwork, coming to understand in the process religious traditions other than those in which they may have been raised. Images such as one provided by Harney continue to be common place depictions of Appalachia. We see these images on television through re-runs of such shows as the Beverly Hillbillies, in comic strips, and in popular movies. These depictions of Appalachia and its people are myths. The purpose of this website is to give a more realistic portrayal of Appalachia and its people. During the course of the 2000 Fall semester, the class agreed to do a oral history project on a community within our Appalachian region. Our class chose to do the project on the Free Hill(s) community. Free Hills was the first free black community within Tennessee. Our goal was to learn about the history of the community by interviewing those people that have lived there. We are now in the final stages of our project. We have completed our interviews and are now in the editing process. Thanks to WCTE of Cookeville for thier help with this process. If all goes well, part of the video will be on WCTE soon and will also be available in the TTU Library archives. Check back here for more information as it developes. Appalachian crafts are diverse and special. Inside
