About the Department
The department is one of the larger departments in the Humanities faculty with 12 permanent academic staff member, a fulltime administrative assistant and a fulltime secretary/receptionist. Close to 1,000 students are enrolled in undergraduate courses with the department. Bachelors, honours and masters courses are offered as well as supervision for research based masters and doctoral degrees.
The department has a good research record and a number of its staff members have established themselves as leading researchers in their particular fields both nationally and internationally. The wealth of research achievement and experience in the department allows staff members to provide sound postgraduate supervision for masters and doctoral research. Staff members serve as consultants in a number of fields. The editors of two accredited SA social science journals, "Social Dynamics" and "Society in Transition" are members of the department.
The Sociology Department is home to a research unit (The Labour and Enterprise Project) and four teaching Programmes. These teaching programmes are the Development Studies Programme, the Industrial, Organisational and Labour Studies Programme, the Diversity Studies Programme and the HIV/AIDS and Society Programme. The department has close links with the Centre for Social Science Research of which one staff member is a director and in which others are involved in research projects. Postgraduate students also participate in the research of the centre and some receive financial support from it.

Knowledge is a fabric of relations in which one individual is fundamentally entwined with all others in a collective discourse. This page illustrates that woven fabric. Each of the following sites links to the Sociology of Knowledge site here at U.C. Denver. The UCD page serves, not as a hub, presuming some priviledged position, but as a conductive thread, one of many fibers which transforms a collection of unique sites into a common woven text. This Corollary page returns a thread to each of the diverse sites. For a theoretical description of this page, see Ryder, 1999

Quote of the Week William Rivers Pitt ...from "Planet Reagan" In the final analysis, however, the legacy of Ronald Reagan - whether he had an active hand in its formulation, or was merely along for the ride - is beyond dispute. His famous question, "Are you better off now than you were four years ago?" is easy to answer. We are not better off than we were four years ago, or eight years ago, or twelve, or twenty. We are a badly damaged state, ruled today by a man who subsists off Reagan's most corrosive final gift to us all: It is the image that matters, and be damned to the truth. Information and links on regional identity, crafts, education, religion, food, economics, environment, music, storytelling, and festivals.
http://www2.tntech.edu/sociology/app/index.html
Images such as one provided by Harney continue to be common place depictions of Appalachia. We see these images on television through re-runs of such shows as the Beverly Hillbillies, in comic strips, and in popular movies. These depictions of Appalachia and its people are myths. The purpose of this website is to give a more realistic portrayal of Appalachia and its people. During the course of the 2000 Fall semester, the class agreed to do a oral history project on a community within our Appalachian region. Our class chose to do the project on the Free Hill(s) community. Free Hills was the first free black community within Tennessee. Our goal was to learn about the history of the community by interviewing those people that have lived there. We are now in the final stages of our project. We have completed our interviews and are now in the editing process. Thanks to WCTE of Cookeville for thier help with this process. If all goes well, part of the video will be on WCTE soon and will also be available in the TTU Library archives. Check back here for more information as it developes. Appalachian crafts are diverse and special. Inside

PROGRESSIVE SOCIOLOGISTS NETWORK P S N PSN is a moderated list devoted to the examination of issues of theoretical and political importance to sociologists. PSN-CAFE is its unmoderated companion list. PROCEEDINGS We seek intellectually stimulating debates around issues such as the nature of the "New World Order," the globalization of capital, the redistribution of labor from the South to the North and its effects on labor struggles, racism, sexism, sexual politics, the resurgence of white supremacist groups, nationalism and ethnic struggles, the future of democracy in an increasingly polarized world and so forth. Last, but not least, we seek a debate about the relevance of Marxism for the theoretical and empirical investigation of the present historical conjuncture. We especially encourage the participation of graduate students through an atmosphere that is supportive as well as intellectually stimulating. Furthermore, PSN has an archive ftp PSN has hosted two important seminars and intends to host many more in the future.
