A. That's an excellent idea. Collaboration is an essential part of professional development and should be modeled in this class. However, each individual needs to turn in his/her own assignments. In fact, I encourage participants to help each other on assignments. Peer feedback is an important course component. Q. Is this course available only to Wisconsin educators?
A. This course is available to educators worldwide who are able to access the resources of the WWW and e-mail. Q. What if I will be away from my computer for a few days?
A. If a participant will be out of town at a conference or on vacation for a few days, it's not a problem. Each participant should keep the instructor informed of his/her progress on the assignments, regularly participate in the online discussion via e-mail or the discussion board, make-up the number of minimum postings per week, and willingly share your expertise and classroom experiences. Tony R. Sanchez Source: Sanchez, T. (1998). Using stories about heroes to teach values . Bloomington, IN: ERIC Clearinghouse for Social Studies/Social Science Education. [ED424190] Return to: Readings in Educational Psychology Educational Psychology Interactive RECENT TRENDS IN VALUES EDUCATION There has been a renewal of concern during the 1990s about teaching and learning valuesstandards that everyone should have about what is good or bad. And leading educators have recommended stories about heroes as a main means of teaching and learning values. Teaching methods that stress only cognitive skills in the analysis and clarification of choices about values have fallen from favor. The current trend is against teaching neutrally about values. Rather, the trend is for teaching values in concert with methods of analysis and judgment that yield answers about right and wrong, better and worse concerning personal behavior and the common good (Leming 1996). Prominent educators recommend that certain widely held values or virtues should be at the core of the school curriculum for the purpose of systematically developing the character of students. They stress the integration of cognitive development and character development through "perspective-taking, moral reasoning, thoughtful decision-making, and moral self-knowledge" (Lickona 1993, 9). And they also urge the use of personal modelsheroesin history, fiction, and current events to exemplify and encourage emulation of particular virtues or desirable traits of character, such as honesty, civility, courage, perseverance, loyalty, self-restraint, compassion, tolerance, fairness, respect for the worth and dignity of the individual, responsibility for the common good, and so forth (Leming 1996; Lickona 1991).

INTASC’s Model Standards for Beginning Teacher Licensing, Assessment and Development: A Resource for State Dialogue (1992) outline the knowledge, dispositions, and performances deemed essential for all teachers regardless of the subject or grade level being taught. Drafted by a committee of teachers, teacher educators, and state agency officials, they represent a shared view among the states and within the profession of what constitutes competent beginning teaching. These standards are currently being translated into standards for various subject matter areas and specific student populations.

Social Studies
Dr. Anya Bernstein, Director of Studies The Social Studies concentration is a unique program of study at Harvard College. Originating in 1960 through the efforts of a small and distinguished group of faculty, it reflected the belief that the study of the social world required an integration of the disciplines of history and political science, sociology and economics, anthropology and philosophy. Concerned with the fragmentation caused by increasing disciplinary specialization, the faculty and students of Social Studies seek an integrated approach to the study of social phenomena that synthesizes the findings as well as the methods of various modes of social inquiry. Accordingly, the common introduction to the concentration in Social Studies 10 is to read closely and at length some of the thinkers who have durably shaped the way we understand society, addressing the questions of how it holds together, the obligations it imposes, the possibilities for liberty and economic development it both nurtures and constrains. Sophomores in Social Studies 10 will thus study the modern foundations of Adam Smith, Mill, Tocqueville, Marx, Weber, Durkheim, and Freud; they conclude with consideration of the problematic issues posed in contemporary society by theorists of gender, language, and knowledge. The tutorial will also introduce one or more major historical case studies in light of the explanatory approaches students have worked through. Throughout the year-long sophomore tutorial the objective is to teach students to read theoretical arguments carefully and critically and to juxtapose them against historical developments and social experience.

Second Major
Students at SUNY Cortland enter the teaching field with a strong academic background by combining SSA coursework with a major in the social sciences. This dual major creates new teachers who have extensive study in the social sciences and are ready to teach subject matter in the grades 7-12 curriculum. Most of our students major in history, but some opt for African American studies, anthropology, economics, geography, political science or sociology
About the Program
The program combines an academic major in history or one of the social sciences with a SSA professional sequence of courses taken in the junior and senior years. During their junior year, majors take pedagogical courses and obtain 85 hours of field experience in secondary-level classrooms. In the fall semester of the senior year, majors meeting program qualifications will perform the student teaching component of the program. They must satisfactorily perform their student teaching in two school placements - one at the middle school/junior high level and the other at the high school level.

    The Academic Program
The academic program at Union flows from the fundamental assumption that a liberal arts college must cultivate in its students a passion for learning. We seek to do this by providing a rich and varied set of course offerings, a faculty committed to teaching, extensive opportunities for undergraduate research and study abroad, and outstanding facilities. Your academic career at Union will have three principal components. First is general education, designed to acquaint you with a broad range of subjects outside your major. Second is the major, a field of study pursued in depth. The third component consists of electives, those courses you take because you want to. Because we know that choosing can be difficult, we provide extensive advising support. Whether you are a freshman who wants to talk about general education possibilities or a senior who wants to discuss graduate school, our faculty members, deans, and counselors are committed to helping you.

Included is a wide array of think-sheets and other devices designed to facilitate quality projects. One of the most common tasks in school and college is learning the definitions of new terms as well as the significance of famous people, places, or events. The LINCing Routine focuses on use of key-word mnemonics to create "lincing" stories and pictures so that new information is anchored to students background knowledge in a manner that makes recall of definitions of terms easy. Use of this strategy can significantly enhance test-performance. This book features guidelines for integrating using of the learning strategy with on-going content-area instruction as well as black-line masters.
