It has carried out representative national surveys of the basic values and beliefs of publics in more than 65 societies on all six inhabited continents, containing almost 80 percent of the world's population. It builds on the European Values Surveys, first carried out in 1981. A second wave of surveys, designed for global use, was completed in 1990-1991, a third wave was carried out in 1995-1996 and a fourth wave took place in 1999-2001. This investigation has produced evidence of gradual but pervasive changes in what people want out of life, and the basic direction of these changes is, to some extent, predictable. This study has given rise to more than 300 publications, in 16 languages.

We've tried to maintain most of the original structure of the site, which models the way the humanities are organized for research and teaching as well as the way they are adapting to social, cultural, and technological changes. But some shifts in organization and navigation are necessary for technical reasons. ( Navigating and Bookmarking VoS Important : the new VoS is still a work in progress, but we have turned it on because it is already more functional than the original site. There are still some mis-orderings of categories and author names that we are fixing as we convert our legacy resources. We've also temporarily removed as many of the broken links as we could find and will restore them when we can (or find substitutes). Some categories have thus been temporarily decimated. Nearly one quarter century ago columnist Lewis Lapham made the following observation: There no longer exists a theater of ideas in which artists or philosophers can perform the acts of the intellectual or moral imagination. In nineteenth-century England Charles Darwin could expect On The Origin of Species to be read by Charles Dickens as well as by Disraeli and the vicar in the shires who collected flies and water beetles. Dickens and Disraeli and the vicar could assume that Mr. Darwin might chance to read their own observations. But in the United States in 1979 what novelist can expect his work to be read by a biochemist, a Presidential candidate, or a director of corporations; what physicist can expect his work to be noticed, much less understood, in the New York literary salons? ("A Juggernaut of Words," Harper's Magazine , June 1979: pp. 12-13). Conditions have hardly improved in 2004. Now in the supposed "Information Age" six out of ten American households do not purchase a single book and one-half of American adults do not read one. In 1965 when the Gallup Organization asked young people if they read a daily newspaper, 67 percent said yes; thirty-five years later, roughly 20 percent answer affirmatively. And yet "they" say we are saturated with informational overload!

T IMES OF OUR L IVES
Time is the element in which we exist. ... We are either borne along by it or drowned in it. Joyce Carol Oates, "Marya" Much can be made of Bob Dylan's "the times, they are a changin'." According to William Irwin Thompson, we're now AT THE EDGE OF HISTORY , buffeted about by John Naisbitt's MEGATRENDS , and with millions suffering from Alvin Toffler's FUTURE SHOCK . In the lifetime of one born in 1976, America's bicentennial year, the population of the world has increased by over one and one-half billion individuals, hundreds of thousands have died in the name of nationalism or religion, trillions of dollars have been spent perfecting doomsday weaponry, and the revolutions in minority, gender, and old age relations have shaken the traditional foundations of social life. To make matters even more interesting, we are told that the pace of such change is accelerating. And with people living ever longer, the historical changes that used to be absorbed by several generations now must be coped within a single lifetime. Largely forgotten are the principles and values on which society's oldest members based their lives. With the accelerating push forward generated by technological and scientific innovations, the future is supposedly coming closer. However, as a society, we seem unable to conceive of great enterpriseslike the medieval construction of the great cathedrals of Europethat can link generations together into a common project spanning several centuries. Simultaneously, the pastthe wake in the water produced by the bow of the future and the hull of the presentis growing longer, thanks to technology replacing personal memories: on celluloid for instance, we can see and hear George Bernard Shawa man born a decade before the outbreak of the American Civil Wartalk to us about first hand experiences with the Victorian sexual mores. Ironically, the extent of our
