    Sociology of Religion
Spring, 2003 by Jose Soltero Romeo Saravia
Among Latin American countries, El Salvador is, along with Guatemala, Chile, and Brazil, one of the countries with the highest percentage of Protestants between 15 and 20 percent of the country's population (Green 1997; Williams 1997). Protestant affiliation increased very significantly during the 1970s and 1980s, a time during which El Salvador experienced a bloody civil war (Williams 1997). Scholars of religion in Latin America have perceived Protestant affiliation as the product of the social disorganization resulting from the civil war and the increase of capitalist modes of living. Related to social disorganization, a second factor acting in favor of Protestant proselytism has been the failure of the economy in Latin America to empower most of its population to leave the ranks of poverty and underemployment (Green 1997). In the case of El Salvador, Williams (1997) attributes the growth of Protestantism to the deep economic and political crisis, the cycle of violence, and the massive displacement of the population after the mid-1970s. In addition to these explanations, other scholars have pointed to the failure of Catholicism to address the spiritual needs of the poor (Shaull and Cesar 2000) and their deeper quest for salvation, liberation, and eternal life (Vazquez 1998).

THE ECOLOGY OF SOCIAL STRATIFICATION Topics covered in this lecture: 1) What is stratification? 2) What are the main ecological explanations for stratification? 3) Illustrative examples: Pomo Indian trade feasts; role of irrigation in state formation What is Stratification? Stratification can be defined various ways, but most commonly refers to institutionalized inequalities in power, wealth, and status between categories of persons within a single social system (e.g., classes, castes, ethnic groups) Status inequalities between individuals are found everywhere, so how much inequality does it take to qualify as a stratified society? On one hand, inequalities based on personal qualities (charisma, economic or social skills, etc.) do not constitute stratification, since they aren't defined by membership in a particular category So, if in a hunting band the best hunter or the healer/shaman is held in high regard and has preferential access to some resources, this ain't social stratification On other hand, all human societies known to date exhibit institutionalized inequalities based on age, and most (all?) have gender-based inequalities as well; so by the general definition given above, all known human societies are stratified

    Diversity and Social Stratification
Saudi Arabia Table of Contents By contrast, the Hijaz, being home to the holy sites of Islam and host to pilgrimage traffic, was directly tied historically into the Ottoman bureaucratic system. The populations of Mecca, Medina, and Jiddah have been infused for centuries by descendants of foreign Muslims who had come for the pilgrimage and stayed. Mecca had substantial Indian and Indonesian communities, and Jiddah had descendants of Persians and Hadramis (from Hadramaut, or Aden), as well as Africans and people from other parts of the Arabic-speaking world. The cities of the Hijaz benefited by donations from pious Muslims throughout the world and became major centers of Islamic scholarship and learning. Jiddah was virtually without peer as the commercial center in the kingdom until the 1960s, and in all the Hijaz towns, mercantile families comprised a powerful elite. Social stratification was linked to this population diversity. Tribal affiliation constituted a major status category based on bloodline. At the top of the tribal status category were the

    SOCIAL STRATIFICATION
Spain Table of Contents Spain in the 1980s possessed a socioeconomic class structure typical of countries entering the advanced stage of industrialization. In general terms, society was becoming more differentiated along class, occupational, and professional lines, with an expanding middle class and a decreasing proportion of rural poor. Although Spain had not yet reached the degree of social differentiation seen in other advanced industrial democracies in Western Europe, it was clearly moving in the same direction. As in other areas, however, Spain was modernizing in a distinctly Iberian style, retaining some important social characteristics from an earlier era. Data on class structure from 1984 have been analyzed in a study by Spanish sociologists Salustiano del Campo and Manuel Navarro, who divided the Spanish work force into two broad groups: salaried employees, constituting approximately 68 percent of the work force, and owners, managers and professionals, making up about 31 percent. The first group was further divided into nonmanual and service workers, who accounted for about 34 percent of the work force, and blue-collar workers, who also constituted approximately 34 percent. The second group had the categories of capitalist business class, with about 5 percent of the work force, and the liberal professional class (e.g., attorneys), and self-employed small business owners, merchants and small farmers, who accounted for approximately 27 percent.

    http://webpages.marshall.edu/~ewen/CorpAssig.htm
Return to Listing of Corporations SOC 375 Social Stratification Fall, 1999 Project This exercise attempts to answer some of these questions. It is also an exercise in a particular kind of data collection—"Power Structure Research." This is the type of research used by sociologists such as C. Wright Millls and William G. Domhoff. The theoretical perspective should be that of "standpoint." You will be viewing their wealth and power from the standpoint of someone on the lower rungs of the ladder. But at the same time, you will be looking at material that is from THEIR standpoint—the way "they see it." Thus, this study of power will inevitably involve questions of positve and negative social powerand the perceptions of that power. I want to stress that this is not simply an exercise in the "good guys" and the "bad guys." This is an exercise that attempts to understand a complex social reality and the structures that underlay it. Part I. Choose a multinational corporation.

This full-color book-and-poster set brings together primary data on income, wealth, race, and marital and occupational status to provide a vivid picture of the U.S. social structure. One thousand color-coded gures make it possible to compare social groups, and understand how income distribution relates to race, sex, education, and occupation. With graphics and careful explanations, the booklet shows how to make the most of the poster, and reveals through comparison the considerable changes in America's social landscape as we enter a new century. Originally published in 1979, The American Prole Poster has become a staple in classrooms, homes, ofces, and union halls. Now updated with the most recent data, it offers critical insights into where we stand at the start of the new millennium. Stephen J. Rose, a former senior advisor to Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, is a senior economist with Educational Testing Service and writes widely on economic and social issues. He lives in Washington, D.C.

Kyrgyzstan: A Case Study of Social Stratification
This publication analyzes the process of social stratification and the social structure emerging in Kyrgyzstan in the course of transition. Macroeconomic policies, privatization, agrarian reforms and changes in social security regime are considered as determinants of social stratification together with other factors, such as social networks, ethnicity, the strength and role of institutions. The volume further focuses on income inequality and examines transformation of the old and characteristics of the new social classes and groups: the new elite, the middle class and the poor. One of the major conclusions of the study is that the country needs a strong income redistribution policy addressing the inequality and massive poverty that present a major challenge to successful transition and sustainable development.
