From Africa Recovery, Vol.16#1, April 2002, page 18 'Another Africa is possible' Social movements organize to challenge dominant economic policies By Joan Baxter, Bamako They came, they talked, and then they marched down Independence Boulevard in the Malian capital, Bamako. Their demonstration blocked motorists' passage, and they shouted slogans: "Another Africa is Possible! Down with neo-liberalism! Down with injustice!" Leading the vociferous procession of about 200 were several of Africa's most outspoken critics of the World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF), structural adjustment programmes and the economic ideology the demonstrators called "neo-liberalism." There was Algeria's father of independence, Mr. Ahmed Ben Bella, 84 years old and still energetic. While the spirited protesters danced and sang around him, Mr. Ben Bella shouted, "Today we are going to bury capitalism here in Bamako!" The march, in early January, came at the culmination of a week-long forum of representatives of more than 200 African social movements, from 45 countries. Held in advance of the late-January World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil (see box), it was an occasion for farmers' groups, women's associations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), trade union leaders and intellectuals from across the continent to meet face-to-face, to try to come up with an African perspective on globalization, and reach a consensus on what issues they could raise at the Porto Alegre forum.

There are many types of foundations in the world, from those that focus only on specific fields such as leprosy elimination, to those that cover broader areas like the growth of civil society. The Nippon Foundation and the groups it supports, on the other hand, are active in such a wide variety of fields that it is nearly impossible to provide a simple definition of just what we are. It would be most accurate to say that we are something like a philanthropic department store. And as with any good department store, we provide a map of what we have to offer. The Friends of the Victor Serge Library
We provide support for the Victor Serge Library, a project based in Moscow.
The library is named after the socialist writer and fighter against totalitarianism, Victor Serge. It aims to acquaint people in Russia with the great wealth of radical and alternative ideas that were forbidden in Soviet times and are hardly heard in present-day Russia, including the many strands of democratic and libertarian socialism which opposed totalitarianism. The library was set up in May 1997 by a group of Moscow scholars, journalists and political activists with the support of International Victor Serge Foundation. It is the only place in Russia where readers can find works written from critical perspectives on social science, Marxism, anarchism, trade-unionism, human rights, environmentalism, and the history of workers' and liberation movements in various countries. The library is also used as a sort of club where discussions, lectures, seminars and gathering of various left-wing organisations take place. From 2002, under an agreement between the Praxis Research and Education Centre and the Public Library Authority for the South-East District of Moscow, the Victor Serge Memorial Collection comprises the main resource of the District Library No. 10 at Verkhnyaya Khokhlovka.

THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE PROPHET VERNON JOHNS: FATHER OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT Another book banned by racism The Rev. Vernon Johns Dr. Patrick L. Cooney Henry W. Powell E-mail: plcooney@verizon.net Sponsored by: Vernon Johns Society Dedicated to: Vernon Johns This is the only full-scale biography of the father of the civil rights movement, the Reverend Vernon Johns, a man censored and banned in his time... a man still too nonracist and truthful for our current politically correct crowd. Who can doubt that it was good to be there, high upon Hermon, in those Transfigured Moments! -Vernon Johns They hate him who reproves in the gate, They abhor him who speaks the truth. Amos 5:10 The only difficulty was that I was rated as sassy. I just had to talk back at established authority and that established authority hated backtalk worse than barbed-wire pie.
