The men's soccer gold medal stays in Africa. In the Sydney Games, the "Indomitable Lions" rule, and have their country's first gold medal. Cameroon won their first ever gold medal in any Olympic sport when they came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with nine-man Spain and then beat them 5-3 on penalties in a remarkable soccer final. The victory gives Cameroon the double of being African and Olympic champions in the same year. They now stand with neighbours Nigeria who became the first African side to win a global soccer title four years ago in Atlanta

Updated: 3:38 p.m. ET May 18, 2004 LONDON - Iraq’s soccer team have a chance to improve now the threat of jail and torture has been lifted with the end of Saddam Hussein’s regime, says their captain. advertisement
Hussam Fawzi told a news conference in London on Tuesday that a “dark cloud” hung over the team, who are in Britain to play a ’goodwill tour’ including a friendly against Trinidad and Tobago and a match against a team of British politicians. “(The past is) something that’s horrible and a dark cloud over all the Iraqi players,” Fawzi said through an interpreter. “Athletes should not go through this they were tortured, they were imprisoned.” Iraq were once a force to be reckoned with in Middle East soccer and reached the World Cup finals in Mexico in 1986 but have languished in recent years because of war, sanctions, and the fear of Saddam Hussein’s sadistic son Uday.

Olympic threat for football lifted
Posted Fri, 21 May 2004 Fears that football might be thrown out of the Athens Olympics were lifted on Friday when FIFA chief Joseph Blatter signed the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Code. International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge has said that any federation that does not sign the WADA code could not compete in the Olympics, which start on August 13. The International Cycling Union (UCI) is the only one of 28 Olympic sports yet to sign the code. Blatter had warned earlier this week that football might be axed from the Athens Games after failing to reach an agreement with "inflexible" WADA president Dick Pound. Blatter had objected to automatic two-year bans in the case of a positive test. He wants cases treated individually.
