Olympic threat to soccer lifted as Blatter signs dope test deal
Fears that soccer might be thrown out of the Athens Olympics were lifted on Friday when FIFA chief Sepp Blatter signed the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Code. International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge has said that any federation that does not sign the WADA code will be unable to compete in the Olympics, which start on August 13. The International Cycling Union (UCI) is the only one of 28 Olympic sports yet to sign the code. Blatter had warned earlier this week that soccer might be axed from the Athens Games after failing to reach an agreement with "inflexible" WADA president Dick Pound. Blatter had objected to automatic two-year bans in the case of a positive test. He wants cases treated individually. Pound had been demanding that FIFA accept the code "as it is or not at all". Blatter won the argument because although FIFA said it "inconditionally" supported WADA's fight against drugs, it also said it had noted Pound's stated agreement that WADA would respect the autonomy of each international federation. FIFA medical commission president Michel D'Hooghe confirmed WADA had agreed to their position that all drug cases be treated individually without the threat of an automatic two-year ban.

Norway defeats U.S. 3-2 in extra time for gold
Posted: Thursday September 28, 2000 12:00 AM Updated: Tuesday November 14, 2000 10:41 AM Antonio Scorza/AFP SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) - It wasn't the finish the fans or the team wanted, but as the U.S. women's soccer team stood behind the silver medal platform Mia Hamm gave her teammates some words of comfort. "She said, 'Hold your head high and be proud.' And we were," defender Brandi Chastain said. "I think you could see that in everybody's eyes. We're very, very proud of what we accomplished. And I hope everybody who watches the game understands it wasn't easy." In the 12th minute of sudden death overtime, substitute Dagny Mellgren scored to give Norway a 3-2 victory Thursday over the Americans and an Olympic gold medal. It also gave it the right to claim a spot next to the United States as the top team of the past decade in major international women's soccer. "Maybe we are the best team in the world now," said Norway coach Per-Matthias Hagmo. "We have beaten the United States four times this year, China three times."

Optimistic outlook for soccer teams despite no golds
Click here for more on this story Latest: Sunday October 01, 2000 01:15 AM SYDNEY, Australia So there I was on Friday night, waiting for Chilean superstar Ivan (Bam Bam) Zamorano to walk through the interview area, waiting to show off my Spanish and ask him a question: "¿Estaba sorprendido por la calidad de los estadounidenses?" (Were you surprised by the quality of the Americans?) Silly me. Out came Zamorano, whose team had just beaten the U.S. for the bronze medal. He had looked like an engaging guy during Chile's pre-game national anthem, which he belted out with more enthusiasm than any athlete I've ever seen. (Watch him sometime. It's fun.) But now he stormed past, emitted a guttural snort and slammed the door, blowing off the media altogether. Ivan, babe, your team
