WOMEN'S SOCCER HISTORY
COLLEGES
A few colleges played club or intramural women's soccer as far back as the 1920s. By the 1950's, a large youth soccer movement had developed, and large numbers of girls participated. A law passed in 1972, often called 'Title IX', said that no school could receive federal funds if that school discriminated against women. Though largely ignored at first, Title IX would later become the driving force behind an explosive growth of women's college soccer. The first varsity women's soccer program was at Brown University in 1977. The first 'national' championship was in 1980. In 1981, a national championship was held by the AIAW (Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women). The first NCAA women's soccer championship was held in 1982. Each year since 1981, a dozen or so new Division I women's teams have been added. And Divisions II and III, the NAIA, and the junior colleges have all experienced dramatic growth. Thanks, in part, to Title IX, women's college soccer is boooming . It's the fastest growing intercollegiate sport (men's or women's). It now ranks as one of the most popular intercollegiate sports for women. The level of play has improved dramatically, as has the competition.

Cashier/Wagering Open Account Members ... History of Women's Soccer - History of Women's Soccer - Ellen Wille, the Norwegian association's delegate at the 45th FIFA Congress in Mexico City in 1986, impressed upon FIFA that more should be done to further women' soccer and to unfold the latent potential in this sector of the game. Little did Wille know her spark would light the way for the women's soccer movement. Presiding over the debates at the Congress, former FIFA President João Havelange not only agreed entirely with the Norwegian female representative but also assured her that he personally would back the women's soccer movement, setting up an ad hoc committee as the first step.
Havelange and then-General Secretary Joseph "Sepp" Blatter were serious about supporting the women's sector. As a long-serving member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Havelange had seen for himself how women had been given the opportunity to compete as equals in a variety of Olympic disciplines to the sheer delight of the crowds. It was only a question of time before women would be beating the drum for their own world soccer tournament. If soccer genuinely intended to achieve universal appeal, it could not turn its back on the female half of the world's population.
Following the FIFA President's consent, the women's soccer scene in pioneering countries such as Norway, Sweden, Germany, Italy and the USA - where 40 percent of all the players enrolled in clubs are girls and women - was given a shot in the arm. The prospects of a world championship afforded women's soccer an arena that would highlight the attractiveness and style of this type of soccer. In any case, it was high time to snuff out any remaining prejudice, which, although unfounded, would still be difficult to eradicate.

The HAMPTON ROADS SOCCER COMPLEX
Virginia Beach, Virginia "Hey...we are REALLY running out of soccer fields for our kids -FAST!" That Virginia Beach soccer administrator's ominous warning in 1990 was soon translated into action with the creation of the "Hampton Roads Soccer Council (HRSC)". Composed of officials from the Virginia Beach Soccer Club, Virginia Beach Travel Soccer Club (Beach FC), the Atlantic Soccer Club, and the Southeastern Virginia Women's Soccer Association, HRSC represents over 6,000 youth and adult players, and a hallmark in community sports manage-ment, by focusing the collective energies of several diverse soccer organizations towards the common goal of improving programs and facilities for region athletes. The HRSC Soccer Complex was fortunate to be twice awarded substantial grants by the United States Soccer Federation, Inc. in annual competition for funds associated with surpluses from the 1994 World Cup, held in the United States. Beyond such grants, corporate support and annual player assessments, the "North American Sand Soccer Championships" is the largest single source of Complex revenues. With the state-of-the-art facility now at full operating levels, attention is turning towards the next phases of development including an office/maintenance building housing meeting areas, concession stands, rest rooms, a medical training facility, equipment garages, storage spaces, and a second-floor walkway for viewing the entire soccer vista. Additional parking areas, adjacent to the Complex, are under construction and long-term landscaping and field refinements are also underway.

Chicago's Soccer History
By Dave Litterer spectrum@sover.net Chicago is been one of the half-dozen historical soccer strongholds in the United States, with roots extending back to the late 1800's. Soccer first came to Chicago, as it did many other cities, with the waves of European immigrants who flocked to the major industrial cities, bringing their love of the game with them. With the establishment of the National Soccer League of Chicago in 1920, the city's position as a major soccer region was secure; for decades, the NSL was one of the "big four" of the amateur leagues, with numerous teams winning the National Challenge Cup, as well as sending players to the national team. In more recent years, Chicago was long represented in the North American League by the successful Chicago Sting and currently fans root for the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer. The amateur league still remains one of the strongest in the country, and Chicago is currently home to the United States Soccer Federation.
The first years
The first official match played under Association Rules in Chicago was played between the newly organized sides of the Pullman Car Works and the Original Wanderers, in 1893. Pullman would go on to become a powerhouse in the early 20th century. Not long after this inaugural match, Soccer was featured at the Columbian Exposition, in a event dubbed a "world championship", which culminated in a match between Chicago Braidwood and a club from Toronto. The success of these early neighborhood teams culminated in the founding of the Association Football League in 1904 with C. W. Critchley as the first President. Teams included the Wanderers, Calumet, Douglas Park, Hyde Park Blues, Hyde Park Grays, and Lake Shores. The Pullmans joined soon after, and immediately became the class team of the league, despite being the only team without an enclosed field. That was remedied within a few years.

Women's Soccer History in the USA: An Overview
Maintained by Dave Litterer spectrum@sover.net Women’s soccer has had an unusual genesis in the United States. As the 21st century commences, the US finds itself as arguably the top country in the world for women’s soccer, both in terms of participation and in international competition. Yet, women’s soccer got off to a fairly late start in this country. Women’s leagues existed in Europe as far back as 1930, and international competitions date back to the 1950s. In the United States, however, organized women’s soccer did not take root until the late 1970’s, and even this was partly an outgrowth of the Title IX legislation of 1972 mandating gender equity in education. Varsity college teams began to spread in the early 1980’s, and a national squad was only established in 1985. The first national women’s league did not launch until 1995, and it was not until 2001 that the first professional women’s league made its debut. But when women’s soccer did finally take off in the US, it was with a vengeance, fueled by enormous participation at the youth and amateur levels, rapidly growing interest by mainstream sport fans and the media, and the growing acceptance of women’s sports in general. After two World Cup titles and Olympic gold and silver medals, the US dominates the world in the women’s game, leading the way as it takes root throughout the rest of the world, with all the cultural implications that follow. But the story leading to this pinnacle of success is an interesting one.

Woman Soccer History
The real birth of the women's game began in the 1950's, as soccer became a popular game for girls, even in England. Meanwhile, there was a massive youth soccer movement in the United States. And girls were more than welcome, thank you. An unofficial European Championship was held in Germany in 1957. During the 1960s, eastern European communist countries encouraged women to participate in sports, including soccer. In 1969 the English FA lifted its ban on women's teams. And by 1971, there was organized women's soccer in some 34 countries. An unofficial World Championship was held in Mexico. By 1991, 65 countries fielded women's teams, and FIFA staged an official Women's World Cup in China, although, at that time, FIFA was reluctant to use the term 'World Cup'. That first Women's World Cup was a tremendous success, with exciting games, a high level of play, capacity crowds, and a worldwide television audience. In England, the English FA (Football Association) merged with the Women's FA and, ironically, the organization which had dealt the crushing blow to the women's game in 1921, had come full circle, and was actively promoting women's soccer, even if half-heartedly, at times.

How it All Began
The concept of Special Olympics grew out of an idea conceived by Dr. Frank Hayden, a professor at McMaster University. That concept was introduced to the Canadian Special Olympics as a competitive platform for persons with a mental disability. The first national Special Olympic Games were held in 1969 and by the time the second national event took place, a total of 1500 athletes from every province had committed themselves to competition.
To meet the growing interest and needs of Canadian's with mental disabilities, the Canadian Special Olympics was formed in 1974. Today, all provinces and one Territory have official associations. Across the country, more than 16,000 Canadians participate in Special Olympics programs, over 1200 of which are registered with the Nova Scotia Special Olympics organization.
