The World Cup
A Brief History Of The World Cup Even though FIFA was formed as early as 1904, it took them almost three decades to start a true international competition. The Olympic tournament had been the only tournament so far with world wide participation, but that was for amateurs only.
FIFA and the International Olympic Committee were at loggerheads over who should control the Olympic soccer tournament. FIFA announced they were the highest footballing authority and so should run a tournament claiming to be the biggest soccer event in the world. With many top nations withdrawing from the Olympics in 1928, among them Denmark and England, FIFA made a decision. They accepted the resolution of Henri Delaunay, secretary of the French FA since 1919 until his death in 1956, that a World Cup competition would be organized immediately.
FIFA duly announced its plan to run its own competition, open to all affiliated countries. They did not immediately give name to the competition, but the world's press were quick to give it their own title. "World Cup", "World Soccer Championship" and "La Coupe de Monde" were favourite descriptions. Another was the "Jules Rimet Cup". Eventually that was how the World Cup officially became known, thus honouring the man who had done so much for FIFA in drumming up support amongst member nations.

The Other History of the Olympics Golden Moments by Allen St. John September 20 - 26, 2000 ure, you've heard a lot about the truly heroic moments in Olympic history: Bob Beamon's record-breaking long jump, Abebe Bikili winning the marathon barefoot, Mark Spitz winning seven gold medals with that Tony Orlando mustache in tow. But the Olympics is also about cheating, drug abuse, wooden legs, sex changes, and death threats by dictators. Here is a Games-by-Games time line of classic Olympic moments that won't make NBC's heartwarming reel of past highlights. Athens 1896 The 1500-meter swim in the maiden Olympics is contested in open seas, with 12-foot-high waves and 55-degree water. Says winner Alfred Hajos, "I shivered from the thought of what would happen if I got a cramp in the cold water. My will to live completely overcame my desire to win." St. Louis 1904

An Overview of American Soccer History
By Dave Litterer spectrum@sover.net This page is a detailed historical overview of United States soccer from its roots in the 19th century to the present day. NEW: The first sections, from 1609-1921 have been completely revised and extensed. Enjoy!
    Origins, 1609-1862
The first football clubs were established in Sheffield in 1857, and soon they had enough to establish their own Football Association in 1867. Sheffield FA played London FA in 1861, one of the first regional matches. And eventually the need for a unified set of rules became obvious. This, prompted by many letters to the editors of the newspapers in the midlands, the near-north, and London regions of England, and led to a series of meetings, which culminated in the formation of the Football Association (FA) in 1863. This group attempted to establish a series of rules, which would please everyone, but they couldn't resolve issues such as use of hands, allowing hacking of opponents, etc. Many supporters of these elements (considered more "manly") eventually withdrew and formed the Rugby Football Union, and the FA established rules more similar to the modern game. The next major development was the establishment of a knockout cup in 1871, based on the house competitions at Harrow School. These knockouts, in which most teams names are placed in a hat, and drawn out in pairs, then leading to a one-game knockout competition similar to the NCAA Championships, which culminates in a Cup trophy.
