The United States Soccer Federation (USSF) is responsible for the development of U.S. national teams which compete in international events throughout the world. The USSF currently fields national teams at Under 17, Under 20, Olympic (Under 23), Pan-American, and World Cup levels for men and Under 16, Under 18, Under 20, Olympic and World Cup levels for women. The players for all these national teams are identified and developed via the Olympic Development Program (ODP) or as it is also known, the State Select Program (SSP). In 1979 the program expanded, the organization became more efficient and multi-year plans were developed. State Associations were encouraged to develop programs which supported and worked in tandem with National and Regional programs. At the beginning of 1982 a formalized program for girls was created, with the addition of a full committee (one member from each Region). From 1982 until the present, international events for youth national teams have increased substantially and the USYSA Olympic Development Program has kept pace by instituting trials and player pools for five

    History of Ball Games
Ancient civilisations had many ball games requiring great skill. There were many variations of football (ie. propelled by the head and feet) which were played from China (Tsu Chu), Japan - Kemari to Mexico. Goals took several forms including bamboo shoots, curtain holes to rings on a wall. William Fitzstephen gave an account of a rough football game played on Shrove Tuesday in 1175. In Medieval England, football was more of a tussle across open countryside where team members fought out a no holes contest to kick or carry the ball across a boundary mark. Death and injury were common and from time to time state and church banned these revelries. Despite this the lawless game continued to be popular in Britain from Orkney to England. According to Manley (1992), a Scotsman described in verse a game of street football he witnessed in Lincoln (England) in 1450.

AMERICAN CANADIAN GAELIC ... RESOURCES SOCCER FOOTBALL Soccer, game played by two teams on a rectangular field, in which players attempt to knock a round ball through the opponents’ goal, using any part of the body except the hands. Generally, players use their feet and heads as they kick, dribble, and pass the ball toward the goal. One player on each team guards the goal. This player, the goalkeeper, is the only player allowed to touch the ball with the hands while it is in play.
Soccer is a free-flowing game that has relatively few rules and requires little equipment. All that is needed to play is an area of open space and a ball. Much of the world's soccer is played informally, without field markings or real goals. In many places, the game is played barefoot using rolled-up rags or newspapers as a ball. Soccer is the world's most popular sport, played by people of all ages in about 200 countries. The sport has millions of fans throughout the world.
Only in the United States is the game referred to as soccer. Outside the United States the sport is commonly called football, or futbol in Spanish-speaking countries, where the game is particularly popular. The official name of the sport is association football. The word soccer is a slang corruption of the abbreviation assoc.
