Iraqis hail berth in Olympic soccer
By Times Staff and Wire Reports Published May 13, 2004 Iraq's soccer team, whose players were brutalized and whose stadium was used as a torture chamber under the regime of Saddam Hussein, qualified for the Athens Olympics Wednesday. A 3-1 victory over Saudi Arabia in Amman, Jordan, coupled with a 0-0 draw between Kuwait and Oman gave Iraq its first Olympic berth in the world's most popular sport. "Simply stated, this is the biggest moment in Iraqi Olympic history," Ahmed Al-Samarrai, president of the Iraqi Olympic Committee, said in a statement. Gunfire echoed through Baghdad streets and flares and tracer rounds lit the sky as Iraqis celebrated the victory, Agence France Presse reported. The 24-member squad will join at least six other Iraqi athletes - five men and one woman - in track, boxing, swimming, tae kwon do and weightlifting who qualified or were invited by the International Olympic Committee and sports federations.

"When the bus pulled into the stadium (in Amman) tonight, we refused to think of anything but winning, and now we are headed to Athens." Iraq defender Ahmed Alwan added: "It's a crazy joy for us. Despite all of the difficulties we faced, we still managed to qualify for Athens." The IOC in February reinstated Iraq's Olympic committee a year after suspending the agency over allegations that Uday Hussein, one of the former president's sons, used the sports office as a headquarters for torture and corruption. Soccer players were among the athletes who said they were beaten and otherwise abused when they returned from losses in international events.

DEREK OLIVER, CP / Soccer referee Sonia Denoncourt holds the 1999 Breakthrough Award at Toronto sports banquet Twenty years ago, Sonia Denoncourt was behind the counter of her hometown Dairy Queen in Sherbrooke, happily serving you a cone, a sundae, even a banana-split when your will power finally melted in the blast-furnace of July. Chances were the berries garnishing your treat were from local fields she'd worked that season, directing pickers and helping them fill their baskets. She was 14 years old. Denoncourt didn't know it then, but her trailblazing career as an international soccer referee began in that ice-cream shop and in those Eastern Townships fields. While other kids her age were sleepwalking through summer, she was taking responsibility for herself and others, learning to size up a situation and seize control, firmly and without hesitation. Now 35, Denoncourt recently learned she's been selected to referee at this year's Sydney Olympics women's soccer tournament. She'll be working her second Games, one of just eight women referees, and she's the only Canadian, male or female, on the Sydney roster prepared by FIFA, soccer's world governing body.

    HISTORY OF SOCCER
The history of soccer shows that so many ancient cultures played a sport similar to modern soccer that no one can say with any certainty when or where soccer began. But it is known that the earlier varieties of what later became soccer were played almost 3000 years ago. History of Soccer China and Japan
One of the oldest forms of soccer in which players kicked a ball on a small field has been traced as far back as 1004 B.C. in Japan. the Munich Ethnological Museum in Germany has a Chinese text from approximately 50 B.C. that mentions games very similar to soccer that were played between teams from China and Japan. The Chinese kicked a leather ball (filled with hair) and it is known for sure that a soccer game was played in 611 A.D. in the ancient Japanese capital Kyoto. History of Soccer Europe
The ancient Romans played a game that somewhat resembled modern soccer. The early Olympic games in ancient Rome featured twenty-seven men on a side who completed so vigorously that two-thirds of them had to be hospitalized after a fifty-minute game. While ancient historians kept records of such conspicuous events as wars and religious movements, they apparently had little interest in preserving the various origins of soccer or other sports, so no one can say how soccer seems to have spread from Asia to Europe. History of Soccer England
    The New History of Soccer
This past World cup, that took place in Korea and Japan was watched by an estimated 33 billion people around the world for almost 27 days. This makes soccer, the most watched single sports event in the world's history not surpassed even by the Olympics. This sport is bigger than baseball, football and basketball combined.

The History of the Olympics Since the Olympic games go way back to the early Greeks, to do an entire history on one page is a bit overwhelming. So, I'll give you a brief summation of how it all began, and then provide some further links for additional information. So, how and why did it all begin? In ancient Greece, they often combined religious festivals with sporting events, to honor certain gods. The Greeks held the following: The Pythian Games
    The Nemean Games
    The Isthmian Games
The Olympic Games It was the last one, the Olympics, that were held for the Greek God Zeus and were also the most popular with the people. The first game is said to be held at Olympia, Greece in 776 B.C. and has been held every 4 years since = 1,168 years! Then, Greece came under the rule of the Roman Empire and the Olympic games were declined, to the point where they actually declined in 393 B.C. by the Christian Roman Emperor, Theodosius I, who objected to what he felt were some "pagan rites" associated with the games. In the beginning, the Olympic games were confined to just one day and one event. That event was a footrace that was the length of the stadium. Soon, additional races were added as the popularity grew, as well as discus and javelin throws (tosses), broad jumps, boxing, wrestling, chariot racing and a pentathlon. The pentathlon was composed of 5 different track and field competitions.
