Games HISTORY TIMELINE UNITED STATES SOCCER The following is a brief chronology of United States soccer history has been taken from the United States Soccer Federation 2004 Media Guide. American folklore asserts that Pilgrim Fathers, upon settling at Plymouth Rock found American Indians along the Massachusetts coast playing a form of soccer. The Indians called it " P asuckquakkohwog ," which means "they gather to play football." Many American colleges played soccer, but there was no intercollegiate competition. Rules were casual and changed often. The Oneidas of Boston, the first organized soccer club in America, were formed by Gerritt Miller Smith. The Oneidas were undefeated from 1862-65. A monument now stands in Boston Common, where the Oneidas played their home matches. Soccer was initiated as an organized college sport in the USA in the years following the Civil War. Princeton and Rutgers Universities engaged in the first intercollegiate soccer match November 6, 1876, in New Brunswick, N.J. Rutgers won the match 6-4. The game was more similar to both rugby and soccer than gridiron football.

Olympic Soccer Medalists
History
Soccer was supposed to be on the program for the first modern Olympics in 1896, but it was cancelled because no teams entered, although some players showed up. The sport officially entered the Olympics in 1900 and it's been on the program ever since. The Olympic stand against professionalism led directly to the creation of soccer's World Cup tournament. After several countries withdrew from the 1928 Olympic tournament because their professionals weren't allowed to play, the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) decided to hold its own quadrennial world championship, beginning in 1929. In 1984, the International Olympic Committee decided to allow professionals to compete, but only if they hadn't taken part in World Cup play, which still left out most of the world's best players. The rule was amended in 1992 to allow professional players under 23 years of age in the Olympics. Since 1996, each team has been allowed to have three professional players over 22. Women's soccer was added to the Olympic program in 1996.

Click here for more on this story Latest: Saturday August 26, 2000 12:02 PM Hidetoshi Nakata leads a Japanese squad that qualified for the Games in impressive fashion. Grazia Neri/Allsport SYDNEY, Australia (AP) Nigeria made Olympic history in Atlanta by becoming the first African nation to win the men's soccer tournament. Maybe Japan can do the same for Asia in Sydney. Although the Chinese women have a good chance of emulating their 1996 performance of finishing runner-up to the United States, no Asian men have made it to an Olympic final. With AS Roma star Hidetoshi Nakata heading a team of young players who qualified for the Games without dropping a point, the Japanese, coached by Frenchman Philippe Troussier, have a realistic chance of winning gold.

Latest: Tuesday September 19, 2000 04:58 PM U.S. soccer head coach Clive Charles (left) directs his team from the bench during the 3-1 win over Kuwait. AP MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - The weather was perfect for football. American football, that is. Maybe that's why the Americans were able to make history. On a chilly, rainy evening that felt nothing like a Summer Olympics, the U.S. men's team advanced out of the first round of an Olympic soccer tournament for the first time, beating Kuwait 3-1 Tuesday. Danny Califf scored in the 40th minute, Chris Albright in the 63rd and Landon Donovan in the 89th as the Americans dominated their Middle East opponents, who no doubt were more used to sand and hot sun than the slippery, bone-chilling conditions at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Substitute Bader Najem scored for Kuwait in the 83rd.

    From News Services
Thursday, May 13, 2004; Page D02 Iraq's soccer team, whose players were brutalized and whose stadium was used as a torture chamber under the regime of Saddam Hussein, qualified yesterday for the Olympics for the first time with a victory over Saudi Arabia. The 3-1 win in Amman, Jordan, coupled with a 0-0 draw between Kuwait and Oman, gave Iraq a spot in the Aug. 13-29 Athens Games. Among the teams that did not qualify for the 16-team tournament in Athens were the United States (fourth place in 2000), Cameroon (gold medalist in 2000), Nigeria (gold in '96), Spain (gold in '92) and perennial world power Brazil. "Simply stated, this is the biggest moment in Iraqi Olympic history," Ahmed Samarrai, the president of the Iraqi Olympic committee, said in a statement. Gunfire echoed through Baghdad streets and flares and tracer rounds lit the sky as Iraqis celebrated the victory, Agence France-Presse reported.
