Soccer was to become an important Saturday social activity with a number of Fijian teams competing for the Ricarnie Cup. Some of the club teams that were formed included: Shamrock (Suva), Kadavu (Suva), Lomaiviti (Suva), Bau (Suva) and Ovalau (Levuka). The late A.H Marlow had recounted in 1982 that a Suva Soccer Football Club originated around 1905 (Joseph, Year Unknown, 36-7). The team made up of European workers from government and business firms from Suva played matches with a team representing Rewa between then and 1910. A similar situation existed in Rewa and Levuka with a number of social club sides that were used to make up district representative sides. In 1910 they played a match against a visiting naval ship from Australia, the H.M.S Powerful. The ship side was the champion naval side from New South Wales and played a second string side that lost 3-1, but quickly made up for the loss by fielding their best XI in the second game.

Spanish National Side History Recent History 1998 World Cup - Quarter finals Spain carried on their impressive form in the period leading up to the 1998 World Cup in France, winning eight and drawing the other two of their qualifying games, and only losing one friendly out of four, to France. Results of qualifying matches were as follows: Faeroe Islands : W 3-1 (Luis Enrique 2, Oli); W 2-6 (Alfonso 3, Luis Enrique, Hierro, Johanssen og)
Czech Republic : W 1-0 (Hierro pen); D 0-0
Slovakia : W 4-1 (Pizzi, Amor, Luis Enrique, Hierro); W 1-2 (Kiko, Amor)
Yugoslavia
Malta
: W 4-0 (Alfonso 2, Guardiola, Pizzi) ; W 0-3 (Guerrero 3) Clemente had been playing a team packed with defenders, with some of these, including Nadal, Sergi, Luis Enrique (then playing full back for Real Madrid) and Hierro, playing in midfield. Nevertheless they had been scoring goals, and with a good performance also in the last world cup, were rated amongst the favourites for this one. The disappointment against the African side was compounded by a poor goal-less draw against Paraguay, with Chilavert on unbeatable form, and Spain had one foot out of the competition. In the last match they rallied to beat Bulgaria 6-1, with goals from Morientes (2), Kiko (2), Hierro and Luis Enrique, but it was all academic as Paraguay beat Nigeria 3-1, and Spain were out.

What is Subbuteo® Table soccer history of the Game. Grab a drink and a snack. This is a bit of a read, but is well worth your time.
http://www.americansubbuteo.com/Home/What_Is/History_of_the_game.asp
Grab a drink and a snack. This is a bit of a read, but is well worth your time. Many thanks to former ASA President Gregg Deinhart for for taking the time to track down this information! Subbuteo is the brand name of a form of table soccer that was developed in 1947 by an Englishman by the name of Peter Adolph. His game was a refinement and development of a previous table soccer game that had been first introduced in 1920. That game was called 'NewFooty'. The common principle of both games was that small figurines with semi-spherical bases that were slightly flattened on the bottom were flicked at a ball to propel it forward and eventually into the opponent's goal. The defender had a goalkeeper, which was a figure which had a rod attached to the back of the base, extending through the back of the goal, which allowed manipulation to save shots. The NewFooty figures were made of lacquered cardboard, which were inserted into lead bases. This lead made them very hard to flick and they had to be spread around the pitch because they could not be flicked very far. As well, the figurines were all different, and they had to be used only in their correct position, i.e. the left-winger could only be positioned on the left wing and not used as a center half. In 1947 Peter Adolph created his new Subbuteo game, using some of the new materials that started to be available after the war - plastic! - His figures were hard cardboard inserted into a plastic base, which was similar to the Keeling model, but more rounded. These figures known as 'flats' were the basis of the game right through until the 60s. Their aerodynamic shape allowed them to be 'curled' around opposing figures to touch the ball. A variety of 00-scale and two-dimensional figures are now available.

The Hoosiers defeated Columbia to win the 1983 NCAA title.
Indiana University soccer is synonymous with tradition and excellence.
In their third decade of varsity competition, the Hoosiers are guided by five-time National Coach of the Year Jerry Yeagley. In 30 years, Yeagley has taken a program from the ground floor stages and built it into one of the strongest and most respected in the United States. In those 30 seasons, Indiana owns more wins, has appeared in more College Cups and has a higher winning percentage in both regular season and post-season play than any other school in Division I soccer. Yeagley has guided the Hoosiers to five NCAA Championships (1982, '83, '88, '98, '99), 15 College Cup appearances (1976, '78, '80, '82, '83, '84, '88, '89, '91, '94, '97, '98, '99, '00, '01), and in the process, has helped Indiana soccer hold the reputation of a program possessing a great deal of class and integrity.

The team once again qualified for post-season play by finishing 2nd in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) regular season with a 7-2-1 conference record. Chosen to host the CACC conference playoffs, GBC fell in the first round, 5-4, in an exciting end to end game against Felician College.
The Lightning faced some tough challenges early on in the season as they lost defender and tri-captain, Carrie L'Italien to an injury the day before pre-season began, played a tough out of conference schedule, and fielded a roster composed of over 50% freshman or transfers. Many of the new players quickly found a spot for themselves on the team and became key contributors. Freshman Stephanie Steele played every minute in goal for the Lightning this season, finishing with a 1.25 GAA, second best in the conference, and 7 shutouts.
