History of Rollins College Soccer

How Rollins College Soccer got started: Excerpts from a story told by Hugh F. McKean ’30, former president of Rollins College, at the Sports Hall of Fame Breakfast, March 16, 1985 McKean served as coach of the soccer team during their initial 1956 season.
The Tars finished with a 0-2-3 record.
I arrived at Rollins to find that the College, among other things, didn’t have a fall sport. My predecessor had eliminated football, and I had no quarrel with that, but I did feel it was important for college to start out in the right way. In my opinion, sports are a necessary ingredient in a community that is supposed to show students how to make life a good experience. The atmosphere of the community has to be positive…it has to be right…. So here I was with a college that to me was starting off wrong. The spirit wasn’t right. We couldn’t bring football back because it was too expensive and it just wasn’t practical. I had seen one soccer game in Calcutta, India—they were playing in their bare feet…. I began to think about soccer and the possibility of starting up the sport at Rollins. I approached Jack McDowall, who had been our football coach, and said, “Jack, here’s a chance for you to have a new career. Let’s start soccer at Rollins, and you can coach it.” And he said, “Hugh, the boys won’t come out.” And I said, “Sure they will. They’d rather play soccer than do nothing in the fall.” And of course you don’t offer a sport just for the students who play it; you offer a sport for the college—so that the atmosphere will be right.

Early kicking games
All throughout history, many ball games have emerged as well as perished independently to one another, often leaving us with nothing but speculations. Considering that many of these games were impulsive and had few or no regulations, it is likely that they also were quite violent. The roughness of these early games surely must have demanded involvement of the legs, for kicking.
We have to emphasize the difference between such scuffles and today's skillful game. Even although modern football evolved from rugby, a major distinction stands between the two - the feet are not only used for kicking but also for controlling and moving the ball (dribbling.) Using body parts other than the feet, like the head or chest, is another factor suggesting the development expert technical skills.
While most ancient ball games had no proven relation to rugby or simply diminished ignominiously long ago, they certainly must have produced skillful players or artisans, much like the superstars of today. Therefore, we must acknowledge these as predecessors of the world's most popular sport.

TKUC Soccer History Eagles Soccer Men’s soccer at King’s took root in the fall of 1991-92 under the direction and leadership of ex-student and TKUC Mathematics professor Glen VanBrummelen. The team operated again in 1992-93 before succumbing to the numbers game the following two years. The team was re-introduced in 1995-96 and has fielded teams in each of the past three seasons. For the most part, the team has participated throughout the winter months in the Edmonton District Soccer Association but has also participated in a number of Christian College outdoor and indoor tournaments. Each season, the team has been competitive and enjoyed a banner season in particular in 1996-97 when they led the EDSA Men’s 6th Division with a 9-4-1 record. Throughout its history, the team has enjoyed the financial support of the College Students’ Association and good fan support from students and staff alike. In 1997-98, the women joined the fray when second year student Janelle Hansen was the main force behind organizing a women’s indoor team. The team fared very well in the EDSA indoor loop during their inaugural campaign. The women too receive Students’ Association funding. From 1998 to 2000, both teams functioned outside of the College athletics programme as student clubs, responsible to the Students’ Association. This arrangement would be brief as the College Athletics Committee entered the teams into the ACAC in 2001. Two International/Olympic size pitches which are located adjacent to the campus are utilized by the teams for training and league play. The first year of ACAC play saw the teams participate in a pre-season competition in Red Deer, as well as eight league games in which the men's record was 0-0-8 and the women's was 0-1-7. The women's soccer team capped off their season by being awarded the ACAC Fair Play award. Both teams saw improvement over their seasons and are looking forward to getting back out on the pitch.

History
Because of this desire to compete against the best players and teams possible, in the year 2001, Brigham Young University participated in its first international tour. The team traveled for 10 days throughout Europe, playing 6 games in Spain and Holland. They compiled a 4-1-1 record, playing games in Spain against Vallecas, Rayo Vallecano reserves, and FC Barcelona reserves, and playing games in Holland against FC Sittard and Minor Nuth. In 2002, they spent 6 days in Pachuca and Mexico City playing 4 games against the various reserve teams of Pachuca and Cruz Azul, compiling a 2-2 record. This is the future of Brigham Young University Soccer, traveling internationally while playing the best competition available.
Paralleling their efforts to increase the level of competition , Brigham Young University Soccer has left the Collegiate Club division of soccer, and have purchased a Premier Development League franchise, where they will begin play in May of 2003. Part of the United Soccer Leagues, this league provides the year round competition necessary to develop individual and team skills that in hand will better prepare them for success in their international travels. We are the only University sponsored soccer program to ever purchase a franchise and that will compete at a level considered higher than NCAA soccer in the pyramid of US soccer development.

HISTORY
The Women's Soccer Club of The Ohio State University has for over 30 years provided women the opportunity to play intercollegiate soccer against other university clubs and varsities. Our tradition is one of success in consistently winning soccer matches while sustaining a strong commitment to both the sport and club organization. The Women's Soccer Club founded the Ohio River Soccer Conference in 1993, which is now comprised of Bowling Green University, University of Dayton, Kent State, Miami University, Michigan State University, University of Michigan, Ohio University, The Ohio State University, Xavier and The Pennsylvania State University. The conference championship is hosted each November in Columbus with the champion sent to the NIRSA Club Soccer National Championship, in Austin, Texas. The club plays three seasons, including approximately 20 conference and non-conference matches in the Fall, 2 Winter indoor tournaments plus scrimmages, and a Spring season of 10 tournaments and individual matches. The 2003 season schedule is being finalized and the team will also travel to a tournament on the east coast, the Indiana for a Cross Conference Tournament, Michigan for the Big Ten at MSU, and will attempt to earn a birth at the National Tournament which will be held in Texas. Once again the team gathered for practice before school starts in September 2004, and leave for the fall trip in September. The team is fund raising for the trip to Texas and the NIRSA tournament, having decided to put in an application for selection to either the National Championship or Open brackets.
