An Overview of American Soccer History
By Dave Litterer spectrum@sover.net This page is a detailed historical overview of United States soccer from its roots in the 19th century to the present day. NEW: The first sections, from 1609-1921 have been completely revised and extensed. Enjoy!
    Origins, 1609-1862
The first football clubs were established in Sheffield in 1857, and soon they had enough to establish their own Football Association in 1867. Sheffield FA played London FA in 1861, one of the first regional matches. And eventually the need for a unified set of rules became obvious. This, prompted by many letters to the editors of the newspapers in the midlands, the near-north, and London regions of England, and led to a series of meetings, which culminated in the formation of the Football Association (FA) in 1863. This group attempted to establish a series of rules, which would please everyone, but they couldn't resolve issues such as use of hands, allowing hacking of opponents, etc. Many supporters of these elements (considered more "manly") eventually withdrew and formed the Rugby Football Union, and the FA established rules more similar to the modern game. The next major development was the establishment of a knockout cup in 1871, based on the house competitions at Harrow School. These knockouts, in which most teams names are placed in a hat, and drawn out in pairs, then leading to a one-game knockout competition similar to the NCAA Championships, which culminates in a Cup trophy.

WORLD SOCCER HISTORY World Soccer History Timeline The origin of football can be found in every corner of geography and history. The Italians, Chinese, Japanese, Egyptians, Ancient Greeks, Toltecs, Native American Indians, Persians, Central Americans, Scottish Clans, Vikings and Assyrians played a ball game long before our era. Later, the Roman harpastum, using a bull's bladder, reached the shores of the Atlantic when the legions conquered Gaul. This game led the way to soule, considered together with the Florentine calcio which emerged during the Renaissance, as the real ancestor of football. Football and handball games reach back to the first steps of the human race. Over thousands of years, ancient communities introduced rules to their elementary play of kicking and throwing. Games also embellished religious or tribal festivals. The Chinese played "football" games at least 3000 years ago. It is suspected strongly that the shadowy Celtic nations of Europe and the Vikings had rather nasty football ceremonies. In South and Central America a game called "Tlatchi" once flourished. The Ancient Greeks and the Romans used football games to sharpen warriors for battle. Roman games such as Harpastum or Paganica, which all had elements of kicking or running with the ball, spread Europe-wide with their empire's armies. Traditional football games played throughout Europe in centuries past are still being staged in modern times, especially in the British Isles. They usually include an element of mob battles and chases over countryside and through water. Undertones of ancient Celtic pagan ceremonies as well

Through its first eight seasons of intercollegiate play, the South Alabama Jaguar women's soccer program has distinguished itself as one of the more consistent clubs in the South. Today, USA continues to add to its tradition as it concentrates on conference championships and turns its focus to NCAA Tournaments. After playing as an independent for four of its first six years, South Alabama found a new home in 2000, one that was familiar to the Jaguar family, as the Sun Belt Conference began sponsoring women's soccer as a championship sport. And it looks to emerge to greater heights with an automatic bid to the NCAAs awaiting its tournament winner. The nine-team league includes Arkansas-Little Rock, Arkansas State, Florida International, Denver, Louisiana-Lafayette, North Texas, Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky. Florida International won the inaugural championship by defeating North Texas, and Denver toppled North Texas to claim the second annual award. The tournament championships return to Mobile this fall.

History of Soccer The earliest evidence of soccer dates from about 200 in China, where a form of the game was played that emphasized the ability of players to dribble a leather ball. The Greeks and Romans also participated in a variation of soccer that permitted ball carrying. The modern-day outgrowth of soccer is known to have started in England, and the first ball reportedly was the head of a dead Danish brigand. Although King Edward III prohibited soccer in 1365 because of its excessive violence and for military reasons playing took time away from archery practice the game had become too popular to be curtailed.

American folklore asserts that Pilgrim Fathers, upon settling at Plymouth Rock found American Indians along the Massachusetts coast playing a form of soccer. The Indians called it " P asuckquakkohwog ," which means "they gather to play football." Many American colleges played soccer, but there was no intercollegiate competition. Rules were casual and changed often. The Oneidas of Boston, the first organized soccer club in America, were formed by Gerritt Miller Smith. The Oneidas were undefeated from 1862-65. A monument now stands in Boston Common, where the Oneidas played their home matches. Soccer was initiated as an organized college sport in the USA in the years following the Civil War. Princeton and Rutgers Universities engaged in the first intercollegiate soccer match November 6, 1876, in New Brunswick, N.J. Rutgers won the match 6-4. The game was more similar to both rugby and soccer than gridiron football.

The contemporary history of football spans more than 100 years. It all began in 1863 in England, when rugby football and association football branched off on their different courses and the world's first football association was founded - The Football Association in England. Both forms of football stemmed from a common root and both have a long and intricately branched ancestral tree. Their early history reveals at least half a dozen different games, varying to different degrees and to which the historical development of football is related and has actually been traced back. Whether this can be justified in some instances is disputable. Nevertheless, the fact remains that playing a ball with the feet has been going on for thousands of years and there is absolutely no reason to believe that it is an aberration of the more "natural" form of playing a ball with the hands. Another form of the game, also originating from the Far East, was the Japanese Kemari, which dates from about 500 to 600 years later and is still played today. This is a type of circular football game, far less spectacular, but, for that reason, a 'more dignified and ceremonious experience, requiring certain skills, but not competitive ' in the way the Chinese game was, nor is there the slightest sign of struggle for possession of the ball. The players had to pass the ball to each other, in a relatively small space, trying not to let it touch the ground.

    COLLEGES
A few colleges played club or intramural women's soccer as far back as the 1920s. By the 1950's, a large youth soccer movement had developed, and large numbers of girls participated. A law passed in 1972, often called 'Title IX', said that no school could receive federal funds if that school discriminated against women. Though largely ignored at first, Title IX would later become the driving force behind an explosive growth of women's college soccer. The first varsity women's soccer program was at Brown University in 1977. The first 'national' championship was in 1980. In 1981, a national championship was held by the AIAW (Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women). The first NCAA women's soccer championship was held in 1982. Each year since 1981, a dozen or so new Division I women's teams have been added. And Divisions II and III, the NAIA, and the junior colleges have all experienced dramatic growth. Thanks, in part, to Title IX, women's college soccer is boooming . It's the fastest growing intercollegiate sport (men's or women's). It now ranks as one of the most popular intercollegiate sports for women. The level of play has improved dramatically, as has the competition.

    History
C.H. Draft tells the tale: The idea of Truck Soccer evolved out of a general desire to drive remote-control cars around and smash 'em. Guy Worthy had spoken of this desire several times early in 1997, to the point where he was ready to dig up a large portion of his backyard to make a dirt track. Of course, there was more to it than this; basic, common sense enhancements to the cars were discussed. Things like grappling hooks, flame throwers, and the like. There were some interesting cheap remote-control cars that already had cheap, snap-on weirdo stuff, but it all seemed rather wimpy. More importantly, none of these cars had more than two unique frequencies. I don't have to explain that, do I? What it meant, rather simply, was that only two cars could race at the same time. Any more cars, and the frequencies crossed. No good. So we started looking at the more expensive cars. And even more expensive. Then we started looking in the glass cases. And there it was. The big one. The Scorpion II. Six frequencies, one hunnerd dollars. Who's got that kind of money? I don't.
