A snowmobile is any motor driven vehicle designed primarily for travel on snow or ice utilizing sled type runners or skis, or an endless belt tread or similar means to contact the surface upon which it is operated. REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS A snowmobile shall not be operated by a Michigan resident unless the owner first obtains a certificate of registration and a registration decal. A snowmobile owned by a non-resident, before operation in Michigan, must display a valid registration from their home state or province, or be registered in Michigan. The secretary of state registers snowmobiles for a three year period for a fee of $15.00. The registration cycle begins on October 1 and expires on September 30 of the third year following registration. Any time a registered snowmobile is sold to another person, the registration must also be transferred. The secretary of state must be contacted to transfer the registration of a snowmobile.

Snowmobile Maine. Ride Right. Enjoy.
Join Us On The Trails!
Another long Maine winter. Months of cheek slapping cold, a pale sun peeking through slate gray skies, feet of crisp, blue-white snow crunching beneath your boots in the sub zero temps. It's just what Maine snowmobilers have been waiting for!
Like ever-faithful Red Sox fans hanging on the first pitch of opening day, our optimistic snowmobilers see each new winter as yet another opportunity for glory: the deepest snows, longest riding season and most memorable journeys on Maine's miles and miles of groomed snow trails.
Last year over 100,000 snowmobilers enjoyed millions of rider-miles as the snowmobile trail system opened early in the south, closed late in the north and rewarded trail workers with months of snowmobiling adventures. All Maine snowmobilers plan for this coming season to be even better!
You're welcome to join them on the trails. Touring Maine on a snowsled allows you to go places and see sights that few people access at any time of the year. There's thousands of miles to explore, and along the way you'll find businesses waiting to serve you, communities that welcome the sight of winter recreationists, snowmobile clubs working to provide great riding and a schedule of snowmobiling activities to keep sledders entertained all season long.

Dec 15, 2000
WHEN SNOW BEGINS TO FALL across the northern half of the country, many people bundle up and head for their snowmobiles. Snowmobiling is more popular than ever in the United States. But snowmobiles can be dangerous. Snowmobiles can weigh up to 600 pounds and can clock more than 90 miles per hour. Currently, each state's rules and regulations vary regarding snowmobiles. Some states allow children as young as 8 years old to drive snowmobiles if they have completed a safety course. Other states have no age restrictions for the operation of a snowmobile. Because the number of snowmobile injuries is on the rise, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recently called for restrictions on the sport. The AAP says that only people ages 16 or older should be allowed to drive snowmobiles. It also recommends mandatory helmets for all drivers and passengers and a ban on passengers under age 6.
