Information Snowmobiling Fuels Canadian Economy Back to Feature Stories Snowmobilers aren't a presence just on Canadian trails and snowy landscapes-they play a big role in the country's economy. For proof, one need only consider a study of Quebec snowmobiling performed recently by Zins Beauchesne et associés for the Fédération des clubs de motoneigistes du Quebec (FCMQ). Almost one Quebec resident in ten owns a snowmobile, and even more call themselves snowmobilers, riding on friends' or rental machines. In all, almost a million Quebec snowmobilers live in half that many households. The study, though, focused only on the 84,000 people who ride groomed trails and belong to FCMQ. These are the people considered "recreational" snowmobilers, and the study looked at the money they generate as they ride. Researchers divided recreational snowmobile use into one-day excursions and multi-day tours. Fixed seasonal expenses-maintenance and repairs, accessories, clothing, insurance, registration and permits-were roughly $980 for each type of snowmobiler. Excursionists spend about $40 per trip for snowmobile and tow-vehicle fuel. Those taking tours spend about $170 for that fuel, plus $120 for lodging. Food and other activities add about $45 to the excursion cost, $164 for multi-day outings.
