Background ... Where
Background of the Sport
This sport is a Canadian invention, having been jump-started by Bombardier's invention of the Ski-Doo snowmobile. It became a major recreational sport in the mid-sixties, and has become a great family winter sport. Today's snowmobiles are quieter, more stable, and more reliable than the early snowmobiles, and some models are downright luxurious, with foot and snack warmers aboard.
To drive a snowmobile, remember that you throttle (accelerate) with your right hand and brake with your left. You straddle the seat cushions, and rest your feet on the running boards, letting your legs absorb the bounces on the bumps. Today's snowmobiles can go as fast as 100 km/h, though you do not want to go at speeds beyond 50 km/h if you wish to see the natural terrain around you.

"As far as this winter is concerned, I guess my attitude is we'll be waiting for next year," said Bob Meyers, executive director of the Maine Snowmobile Association. "Folks are still riding in some areas, and, depending on who you talk to, this year was either a disaster or the best year they've ever had. The important thing is that a year that's lacking in the snow department just demonstrates how important snowmobiling has become to so many communities in Maine." A trail system opens your woodland to many recreational opportunities. Cross-country skiing, hiking, nature observation, hunting, snowmobiling, horseback riding, bicycling, and quiet reflection are only a few of the possibilities. Trails also provide the access needed to monitor woodland conditions and identify management problems, helping you lay the foundation for long-term woodland stewardship. At the most basic level, trails connect you with your woodland. Hikers, bicyclists, foresters, nature lovers, and others can all agree: there is something unique in the experience of traveling a woodland trail. This publication is a guide for private woodland owners, organizations, and businesses (including nature centers, youth groups, schools, conservation clubs, and resorts) that are interested in designing and constructing trails. It describes step-by-step construction methods, ways to handle trail obstacles, and recommended standards for the most common types of trails.

I recently attended a snowmobile show in the Western United States. The high level of enthusiasm and the big crowd was great to see. The show promoters, dealers, and manufacturers were all up beat as the show closed early Sunday evening and they announced record crowds and "THEY WERE SPENDING MONEY!!!". I left the show thinking that with a little help from Mother Nature this is certainly going to be a great winter season. The next day, I received a call from the Big East Show in New York. Wow, they reported record crowds and "THEY WERE SPENDING MONEY!!!" I then sat down and reviewed the latest Roper Report, conducted for the American Recreation Coalition and I was pleased with some of the report, but not all the news was positive.
The American Recreation Coalition is a 30-year old Coalition representing virtually all recreation interests in the United States. The snowmobile manufacturers are sustaining members of the organization, which promotes outdoor recreation to those in Washington DC and elsewhere. Semi-annually, they contract with an internationally recognized research firm, the Roper Group, to conduct a survey to help determine recreation trends in the United States.
    The Roper Report highlights are:
Approximately 90% of all Americans participated in an outdoor recreational activity over the last 12 months. Roper tracks 27 outdoor recreation activities including snowmobiling and most Americans participate in at least 5 of those activities every year. The outdoor activities include walking, swimming, hiking, golfing, hunting, RV Camping, horseback riding, motorcycle riding, mountain bike riding, water skiing, sailing, snowboarding and snowmobiling and more. The survey results present a very inclusive picture of outdoor recreation in the United States.

Boulder Mountain and the many different lakes provide opportunities for hiking, fishing, and viewing outstanding scenery.
Recreational opportunities on the Forest are highly diversified. Visitors may enjoy camping, hunting, viewing scenery, hiking, horseback riding, and fishing in very primitive settings away from the sight and sounds of motorized vehicles. Others, who prefer more developed areas and less primitive conditions, may enjoy vehicle-based activities such as camping, picnicking, resort lodging, recreation residence, sledding, skiing, hunting, gathering forest products, viewing interpretive exhibits, hiking, viewing scenery, driving for pleasure, snowmobiling, biking, horseback riding, canoeing, sailing, swimming, water skiing, and fishing.
Wilderness: The Forest has 83,000 acres of wilderness in three areas: Pine Valley, Box-Death Hollow, and Ashdown Gorge. Pine Valley and Ashdown Gorge offer opportunities for solitude, horseback riding, and hiking. Box-Death Hollow offers opportunities for solitude and hiking, but the terrain is much too rough for horses.
