Who is the Scallop?
Scallops are found in oceans across the world, comprising a group of several hundred species. The scallops you usually eat at a seafood restaurant are the large northern kinds. These are fished commercially for the large single muscle, which is excellent for eating. The main type of scallops found in the Southeastern US are the Atlantic Bay Scallop and the Calico Scallop. The Calico Scallop, used in shell jewelry, is abundant offshore in south Florida. The Atlantic Bay Scallop, which is also abundant, is a popular seafood. Scallops move by snapping their shells together and 'spitting' water out! They propel themselves rapidly in a zigzag direction. Most kinds have a series of brightly colored eyes along the edge of the mantle. These are sensitive to minor changes in light intensity, as might be caused by a passing fish. What appears to be the top and bottom valves of the scallop are actually left and right valves.

Diving and Snorkeling Monterey Peninsula and Northern California > Customer Review #1: Snorkeling Guide? This has nothing to do with Snorkeling

I bought this book and the Diving and Snorkeling Guide to the Cayman Islands sight unseen. Ususaly Lonely Planet has great books but not this time. This is a dive guide, not a snorkeling guide. Putting Snorkeling into the title is a blatent attempt to sell more books. There is almost no info about where to snorkel in Monterey or Northern California. Instead, the info is just about diving. Info about diving a site that is in 75 feet (etc..) of water has nothing to do with being able to snorkel it.
Diving and Snorkeling Monterey Peninsula and Northern California > Customer Review #2: Good general reference, locals and tourists.

Sailboats, fishing boats, ski boats and houseboats all share the lakes' 290 square miles without crowding one another. On these spacious open waters opportunities for sight-seeing and other boating activities are varied. Boaters will find that they can see and reach many scenic areas that are inaccessible to those traveling by car. For example, boats can easily travel up the narrow, steep-walled gorge of Iceberg Canyon in Lake Mead or up the equally spectacular Black Canyon in Lake Mohave, which retains much of the character of the Colorado. Boaters can also investigate the numerous secluded coves formed by fingers of the desert jutting out into the water. Many of these coves are bordered by sandy beaches where you can picnic or camp. The beaches are particularly popular camping spots during the hotter months. For those who want hours of uninterrupted waterskiing, the lakes' wide basins are perfect, especially when winds are light. Sailboarders will prefer near-shore areas and stronger breezes.
