    71. MY CARE SHEET (general Care For Boas & Pythons By Gary Davis)
Your snake will also require a hide box . snakes in general are den dwellers. Therefore it is a good idea to have someplace where they can go to hide.
    http://community-1.webtv.net/bigboy13/MYCARESHEETBall/
(this is my lawyer) I am not now, nor will I ever be, a snake expert. This web site is meant to be a GENERAL GUIDE ONLY, and should not at any time be construed as the word of GOD or anything similar. I have no magical healing powers and will not be liable for anything untoward that happens to your snake as a direct result of anything read or implied on this and ALL SUBSEQUENT PAGES. My attorney and I thank you.
SELECTING THE RIGHT SNAKE FOR YOU
The first thing you need to do is take a step back and let some common sense take over. Some snakes can reach epic proportions. The African Rock Python, Reticulated Python, Burmese Python and the Anaconda are just plain huge! Retic's and Anaconda's can reach lengths of 30 or more feet and weigh 800 pounds! Read that again if you must. It is TRUE! And the Burmese is not far behind. An adult female can be upwards of 25 feet and weigh 300 or more pounds. Not the kind of animal I want prowling around my house. I once asked my daughter what a 30 foot Anaconda eats and she replied, "ANYTHING IT WANTS"! Pretty smart for a 9 year old.
Common sense and a lot of RESEARCH should help you decide what kind of snake is best for you and your family. Why is research so important? Well, if you did your research you would know that female's are bigger than males for the most part. I found this out from a breeder. I didn't know that a female Red Tail Boa can be as much as 12' long and the males usually not more than 6'-8'. This is why I chose a male. I have 2 small children and a dog and cat. I don't need any of them killed.

This page is for anyone with an interest in Herpetology. Here you can find basic information, humor, and hundreds of links sorted by subject. Including Herps in general, alligators, frogs, turtles, tortoise, snakes, hot snakes, lizards, along with different clubs, societies, and associations. FYI's Snakes and Such Most people who take the time to do a site, have knowledge of some sort, there are very few who are true experts in all the many facets of Herpetology. So by gathering hundreds of sites and attempting to sort them by interest, you should be able locate most anything you would ever need to know here. Please remember that sites that dealer's may also offer great information. However, I have not done business with any of these companies (my snakes were local unwanted pets). Always get references before buying. (i) - Sites offering information
    (l) - These are link sites, much like this one
    (p) - Personal sites, that mostly cover information about their personal pet
    (r) - rescue
    (s) - Sites that sell animals and/or supplies The Animal section contains almost 30 pages and 1,500 links along with information, about animals and insects ranging from the average house cat to elephants. Even a little animal humor is sprinkled around.

That is, are the small head and jaw gape, and narrow ventral scutes in these snakesprimitive for snakes in general, or is it a secondary, derived condition

The earliest fossils identifiable as snakes (within the node-group Ophidia) are from late Cretaceous. Older snake-like fossils (stem-group Serpentes), mostly vertebrae are present from Early Cretaceous. Dinilysia patagonica (Late Cretaceous) is the sister-group of Alethinophidia, united to that clade by having the quadrate rotated into a more posterior position (Rieppel, 1988). Note: On the version of the snake phylogeny handed out in class, Serpentes was incorrectly given as a node name. Ophidia is the node name; Serpentes is the stem name. The two are correctly depicted on the Tetrapod Phylogeny handout. A corrected version of the snake phylogeny is posted above. The position of snakes relative to other squamates has been debated. Some hypotheses based on morphological data are:
    • Snakes are most closely related to varanoid lizards. This is also supported by a recent molecular data set (Forstner et al., 1995) that showed snakes to be more closely related to Varanus than to Hemidactylus, Sceloporus, Cyclura, or Scincella.
    • Snakes are most closely related to burrowing scincomorphs.

    Feeding Hatchling Snakes
Notes from NOAH , XXII(10):3-4 Now that it is nearing the time for snake eggs to start hatching, here are some general guidelines for getting baby snakes to start eating. Be sure to keep the snake warm and dry. Place the snake in a small enough container [deli cup, paper bag, cloth sack] so that it will readily encounter the intended meal. Whenever possible, keep the hatchlings in separate containers so as to avoid having two animals grab the same food item. This also prevents any shy snakes from being intimidated by a more aggressive cagemate. [Note: Depending upon the species, hatchlings may be housed together and just separated at feeding time.] Provide a shelter or other place for the snake to hide itself. Keep the food items small. Small items are more easily digested than larger items. A general guideline would be to offer a single mouse of about the same girth as the snake. Some hatchlings may feed as soon as they emerge from the egg, but most probably will not. Do not feel compelled to try to feed the snakes until after they've shed for the first time, which will be about a week or two after hatching.

Snakes - General Hints and Tricks
    [Back to Snake Care Sheets]
The following is a brief summary of topics that relate to you and your snake. Our intention is to provide general information and highlight issues we think are particularly important when dealing with snakes. At the end of this information sheet we listed the sources used to compile this information in addition to other sources you may want to consult when finding out about your snake. Choosing an Animal Housing Ideally, the habitat should be set up before the animal arrives at home. This will make the transition much less stressful for the snake. Size Construction The terrarium should be constructed of sturdy, non-porous, water resistant materials. For most species, an aquarium is ideal because it can be easily cleaned and disinfected. Alternatively, cages can be constructed of fiberglass (usually prefabricated units), melamine (prefab or home made), or plywood (home made, must be sealed). Regardless of the materials used, the cage must be sturdy and secure because snakes are incredible escape artists and will find any weakness in the design of the cage. If you construct your own cage be sure to ventilate it properly to allow cool air to enter the cage and hot air to escape. The most efficient cost effective way to accomplish this is to drill ventilation holes in the back near the bottom (cool air in) and top (hot air out) of the cage.
